Eagles to test Blackhawks’ vaunted defense

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor A strong regular season schedule and depth may give South Putnam’s Eagles the edge needed to overcome the Spring Valley Blackhawks’ defense in the regional of the IHSAA Class A Football Tournament. The No. 2 ranked Blackhawks and No. 7 ranked Eagles play at 8 p.m. Friday in the regional round of the 17th annual IHSAA Football Tournament (radio broadcast WJNZ, 94.3 FM). Springs Valley High School is located in French Lick on Larry Bird Blvd. REVENGE COULD GIVE the Blackhawks an extra incentive. The Eagles came from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat the Blackhawks 13-10 last year. “We just feel like it was a good ball game last year and we know it’s going to be a good one this year,” Springs Valley coach Bill Harris said. “I don’t think the kids are thinking of revenge. They just want to go out and play well.” Springs Valley’s defense has played especially well. The Blackhawks have not been scored on in seven games and allowed just seven points all year. The only touchdown they allowed came in the fourth quarter of a 36-7 win over over Class 3A North Harrison. “I THINK WE’VE got a solid defense, but I’m not so sure they’re as good as those scores make them look,” Harris said. “We play a pretty good schedule, but this year some of the schools have not been very good. Lawrence North seeks sweep

By STEVE HERMAN AP Sports Writer Lawrence North, which won the state basketball tournament last spring, is three football victories away from becoming the first Indiana high school ever to win championships in both sports in the same year. But the hardest part still lies ahead for the unbeaten Wildcats, who play four-time football champion Carmel Friday night in one of the four Class 5A regionals. North comes in with an 11-0 record and the state’s N 0.3 ranking, while Carmel’s Greyhounds are ranked fourth and are 10-1 with a 10-game winning streak. TOP-RANKED PENN is at Lafayette Jeff, N 0.2 Gary Wallace plays at Valparaiso, and unranked Columbus North is at Castle in the other 5A regionals. The four regional winners will advance to next week’s semistate round, and the two finalists will meet Nov. 25 in the Hoosier Dome for the championship. Lawrence North won its second sectional title last year before losing to eventual state champion Indianapolis Ben Davis in the regional. It’s not that 31-0 shutout loss, however, that is motivating the Wildcats. Instead, it’s a 46-12 loss to Carmel in the first round of the 1985 tournament, the last time the two teams faced each other on a football field. “WE DREW THEM in the opening sectional game, and they drubbed us,” recalled Lawrence North coach Doug Reeser. “They ran us out of town. They beat us real bad.” Carmel has won three of its four championships under Jim Belden, who is sixth among all Indiana coaches in career victories and third among those still active with a 216-63-2 record. Two weeks age. the Greyhounds beat Ben Davit, whose coach, Dick Dullaghan, coached the first Carmel championship team in 1978. Valparaiso, Penn and Castle also are former state champions still alive among the eight 5A regional teams. Gary Wallace and Columbus North became first-time sectional winners last week. tested this week because South Putnam has a good offense.” While South’s schedule included sectional champions South Decatur (10-1), Tri-West (11-0) and Monrovia (8-3). Spring Valley’s best opponent was Paoli (4-4). Coach Mark Wildman says that should help the Eagles. “We could say it against North Putnam because they play the same schedule we do,” the coach said. DEFENSE HAS ALSO been South’s strength. The Eagles have given up 13.5 points per game, a deceiving mark. Take away a 39-0 loss to unbeaten Tri-West and a 3322 loss to Class 3A Owen Valley and the Eagles are allowing just 8.2 points per game. Monrovia’s lone touchdown came on a pass interception and Rockville’s two on a high snap out of the end zone at the end of the game. “They’ve got a very good defense,” Harris said. “It’s far and a way better than any defense we’ve faced this year.” This could be a quick game because both teams like to inn the football. CHRISTY LEADS SOUTH’S running attack with 905 yards rushing, followed by fullback Philip Huber at 326 yards. “We aren’t going to stop Christy, but we’ve got to at least contain him” Springs Valley’s Harris said. “We just can’t let him run wild.” Hudleson, a 5-11, 170 junior, has rushed for 1,133 yards and 14 touchdowns, followed by fullback Troy Pritchett with 627 yards and 21 touchdowns. Depth could swing a close game in South’s favor. Springs Valley plays just 14 players. “We haven’t had to play four quarters in so long, that is definitely a concern,” coach Harris said. South’s linemen especially should be fresher. Buddy Tanner is the only two-way starter on South’s line and he alternates on defense with Don Schilling. “We don’t have anybody on the field all of the time,” Wildman said. “If it’s a physical game that is to our favor.”

What has been most surprising is that in three playoff games, Andrean has outscored its opponents 54-0, its only shutout victories of the entire season. THREE OF THE eight regional

teams in Class 3A are coming off their first sectional championships but two of them, Charlestown and Greensburg, will face each other Friday night. Charlestown comes in at 11-0 and ranked fourth, while Greensburg, at 5-6, is one of only two teams still in the tournament with a losing record. Greensburg started the tourney at 2-6, including a regular season-ending loss that snapped a 27-game losing streak for Jennings County. “WHEN WE LOST TO Jennings County, the kids could have quit,” said Greensburg coach Steve Snyder. “We got some breaks and created some turnovers. I’m just tickled to death for Greensburg.” Charlestown is coming in off a 32-22 victory over top-ranked Evansville Memorial, avenging its last loss, 46-12, in the first round of sectionals a year ago. The third first-time sectional winner in 3A is Hammond Noll, whiich plays at North Wood Friday night. Also Friday, No. 10 New Palestine, whose only loss this season was to Crawfordsville, plays at unranked Indianapolis Roncalli, the defending state champion, while N 0.5 Crawfordsville is at N 0.7 Fort Wayne Dwenger on Saturday. THE ONLY FIRST-TIME 2A sectional winner is unranked Monrovia, which is home Friday night against Evansville Mater Dei (5-6), the only other team besides Greensburg with a losing record. Top-ranked Tri-West is at N 0.5 Frankton in the only regional in any of the five classes matching two unbeaten teams, while N 0.4 Western Boone, the defending champion, plays at Manchester and unranked North Judson is at N 0.7 Fort Wayne Luers. SHERIDAN’S LOSS ended the high school career of Brett Law, whose resume includes two state championships and national records for career touchdowns (141), season points (453) and career points (952). Law has not decided yet where he will attend college, although he is being heavily recruited by such national powers as Notre Dame, Michigan, Southern California and UCLA.
