School plan Continued from page 1 feasibility study looked at that problem. “I don’t have a crystal ball to see what changes in education are coming five years down the road,” Druckemiller said. “I have a pretty good hunch.” He said the need is to plan for today’s problems while developing a plan that offers flexibility to deal with tomorrow’s problems. He said the Northeast Plan does that McCALL SAID THE BOARD was not being asked to vote on who supports students and who doesn’t, or who supports teachers and who doesn’t, “but if this plan is good for us.” He said other, unexplored plans are out there. He wondered what the GCSC could do spending half of the estimated $5.5 million. He also asked about temporary classrooms utilized until the tax abatement plan the City of Greencastle offered six new industries to locate here begins to wind down. McCall said the Northeast Plan had been put to the board for the first time at its Oct. 25 working session, giving board members less than one month to consider iL McCall also protested that the GCSC did not know for certain where it stood with Denny Skeens, the facilities planner for the Indiana Department of Education. Skeens will be the one person who assigns a project number to the Northeast Plan, in effect affixing the IDOE’s stamp of approval for the work. MRS. SMITH AND ARCHITECT Joel Blum had told the board they had met separately with Skeens, only to be told that the IDOE did not want to see three small elementaries in Greencastle. Instead, they quoted Skeens as saying that the IDOE wants the GCSC to move toward two larger elementaries. McCall said if that was, in fact, Skeens’ position, he wondered why the IDOE would support a project creating one large elementary and two very small ones. He was also concerned that the IDOE was limiting local options with its stance. McCall then made a motion to table the issue. And when Allen pointed out his motion to approve was already on the flow, McCall countered saying a motion to table takes precedence over any other motion of the floor. MRS. BROWN SECONDED McCall’s motion, which was voted down 3-2. Allen, Delp and Spencer voted against it, while McCall and Mrs. Brown voted for tabling. Spencer then seconded Allen’s motion to approve the project and it passed on an identical 3-2 vote. Allen, Delp and Spencer voted yes while McCall and Mrs. Brown voted no. After passage, Mrs. Brown asked that the minutes reflect that she did not oppose the project, but wanted a program study completed before architect’s drawings are made. Druckemiller then recommended Inter Design be hired for the project, a motion that passed on a 3-2 vote. McCall and Mrs. Brown opposed it, saying while (hey favored Inter Design doing the work, they wished to see the GCSC go through the bidding process to hire a firm. WHEN DRUCKEMILLER recommended the board hire Mrs. Smith as educational consultant, McCall protested that she was the person who recommended Jones School be closed, a proposal he said “is inconsistent with the desires of the community.” The motion to hire her passed on a 3-2 vote. When it came time to hire Thurber and Rund, the board was able to vote unanimously. The school system will hold its required public hearing on the project, probably during its regular meeting Dec. 13. At that time, each of the GCSC’s advisers will again present their programs to the board and the public. Under a timetable established in October, the board will receive construction bids in May 1990, with renovation work to begin June, 1990. New construction work at Northeast will begin as students start the 1990-91 school year, with occupancy scheduled for August 1991. Other board action will be covered in a future article. DePau w —Continued from page 1 is to continue these efforts through the scholarship.” He earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Missouri, master’s at the University of Kansas, and doctorate at Stanford University. After teaching at the University of Kansas, Indiana University and Lehigh University, Turk joined the DePauw faculty in 1928. His service to DPU included head of the department of Romance Languages, 33 years on the university’s faculty committee on athletics, and three years as a cross country coach. He was the recipient of the Best Teacher award in 1957, and in 1968 was named emeritus professor. DePAUW PRESIDENT Robert Bottoms said, “The Ixiurel H. and Esther L. Turk Endowed Scholarship reflects Laurel’s commitment to excellence in his many years of teaching at DePauw and to making students more aware of other cultures. It is especially gratifying to receive this kind of support from a longtime member of the DePauw community, and it will help the university continue to enhance the international scope of our curriculum.” In recognition of his teaching of Spanish, Turk was awarded Spain’s Knight Commander of the Order of Civil Merit in 1965. He served 13 years as secretarytreasurer of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese and was given that organization’s Distinguished Service Award in 1983. Turk was the principal organizer and secretarytreasurer from 1953 to 1965 of Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, the national Spanish honor society for secondary schools. When he was not satisfied with existing Spanish textbooks in the schools, Turk began writing in 1941. “El espanol al dia” was written in 1949 and is now in its sixth edition. “Foundation Course in Spanish,” written in 1957, has become a standard for Spanish textbooks and is in its seventh edition. These texts were among the first to incorporate the teaching of Spanish culture with the teaching of the language. ESTHER TURK SERVED D Pauw as a part-time instructor of home economics in 1951 and 1956, and she was a substitute teacher at Greencastle High School and elementary school teacher in Richmond, Kan. She attended Baker University and Emporia (Kan.) Teachers College and was awarded a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas. She has taken a leadership role in community activities. She was captain of Girl Scouts in Greencastle, and she helped organize the League of Women Voters, Putnam County Hospital Guild, and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. She also has served on the Diocesan Board in Indianapolis.
