Truth in advertising not regulated by government agency
By JACKIE BAUMANN Extension Home Economist Many people believe that advertising is screened by a government agency and that, therefore, all claims about health products in advertising must be truthful. This is not the case. THERE IS NO federal, state or local government agency that approves or verifies claims in advertisements before they are printed. Neither do individual newspapers have the ability to verify the truthfulness of every advertisement they receive. Not all advertisements for health products are false, of course. In fact the vast majority aren’t Sometimes quack products are easy to spot, like the magic pills that are supposed to keep you young forever. Many times, however, advertisements are designed to look like a news article which makes it very difficult to tell if you are reading news or advertisements. On Oct. 2, an advertisement that was designed to look like a news article was run in the Banner Graphic. Entitled “Doctors Invent ’Lazy Way’ to Lose Weight,” it described a “remarkable new weight loss pill” called a “fat-mag-net.” The ad bore a remarkable resemblance to an ad for a “Super Pill” which is used as an example in an anti-fraud kit being distributed currently by the Health and Human Services Division of the Food and Drug Administration.

THIS YEAR WE Americans will spend billions of dollars on products that do nothing for us or may even harm us. And we’ll do it for the same reason people have done it since ancient times. . .we want to believe in miracles. We want to find simple solutions and shortcuts to better health. It sounds too good to be true and it is. But we’re tempted to try the product in spite of all we know about modern medical science or perhaps because of it. After all, many treatments we take for granted today were once considered miracles. But remember the old adage if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. For more information on critiquing quack ads, individuals may call or stop in the Office of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service on the first floor of the courthouse in Greencastle.
