called the sheriff’s department on a cellular telephone. After fire-rescue units arrived, the victim was taken to the Hendricks Community Hospital and treated. Buescher and Walters reportedly returned to the Briana Inn and fled Indiana the next day. Since the incident, the victim has been in Veterans Hospital several times for various medical problems, according to Lt. Steve Golden of the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Dept THE PLOT BEGAN to unravel when the Clarksville, Ark., police dept, tried to stop Walters for a routine traffic violation, leading to a high-speed chase. He was eventually apprehended and a computer check revealed the Hendricks County arrest warrant, according to Ll Golden. Walters did not fight extradition and was returned to Indiana April 5. He was released on $5,000 on April 28 after finding a community sponsor. Ll Golden explained the sponsor is a community member who can vouch for the suspect. Buescher turned himself to Phipps on April 8. Phipps alerted the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Dept, who came to Greencastle to arrest him. He was released on $5,000 bond on April 25 after finding a community sponsor, LL Golden said. THE TRIAL, WHICH began Tuesday, is expected to last through Thursday at Danville.

Board member Sherm Hacker questioned the cost of adding the program to the renovation. He pointed out that the renovation project already exceeds the $5 million limit the board imposed on itself. HACKER SAID HE was not against the program, but no money is available for it considering the other plans the board has. Hammond said board members could investigate the idea further. An aquaculture seminar is set for November in Alabama. The board voted to send two or three people to the seminar to get information on equipment cost and the feasibility of program. Also, the board reviewed suggestions by its teachers and staff on the renovation project and directed architect Paul Pierson to include the widening of the track to eight lanes

when multiple deaths result from a single accident involving a drunk driver, that does not increase the number of crimes committed. THAT RULING COMES from a Miami County case in which a semi-truck driver hit a pick-up truck killing one person and injuring another. Boles said he does not agree with that ruling. “The law has to reflect the justifiable expectations of the people. Nobody in Indiana would say that (law) is correct,” he said. “In my opinion that kind of ruling comes from judges who don’t have to face election from the people.” Prosecutor Coleman also said the law is frustrating. “IT’S JUST LIKE YOU get free killings,” he said. “You can hit one person or hit a busload of kids and still get one punishment.”

Coleman said he dictated a letter Thursday to state legislators asking them to appeal the Miami County decision. He said the law will hopefully be changed at the next Indiana General Assembly. In handing out the sentence, Judge Boles said to Holsapple, “Our law cannot deal with a criminal act like yours that resulted in a loss of this kind of magnitude and the random needless tragedy it caused to victims without any fault “You had an opportunity to have another family member drive and you drove anyway. For an extended period of time you drove that car in a reckless, heedless manner straight into these victims* car causing wanton suffering and death. You used a car instead of a gun to kill three people and seriously injury a fourth.

“UNTIL TODAY, THIS very day in this courtroom, you showed no remorse to these victims. No attempt to console them and no attempt in any way to help them in their plight that they couldn’t extricate themselves from.” At the sentencing, Holsapple apologized to members of the Oleksy family for the accident. Boles suspended the Putnam County man’s drivers license for life, and ordered Holsapple to make restitution to all of the victims. AND BECAUSE OF Holsapple’s diabetes and the lingering injuries he suffered in the accident.
