DPU’s Wayne Glausser is Indiana Professor of Year
Wayne Glausser, DePauw University associate professor of English, has been named Indiana’s Professor of the Year in recognition of his teaching, scholarship and service to the university. Glausser was selected for the honor by the Council for Support and Advancement of Education (CASE) as part of National Higher Education Week, OcL 8-14. CASE has recognized one professor in each state for the annual honor, and more than 500 professors were nominated nationally. The national professor of the year is J. Dennis Huston, professor of English at Rice University. “I try to challenge students; I aim high,” Glausser said. “I’d much rather be too ambitious in how much we try to cover in a course or how sophisticated the ideas we discuss.” ENGLISH LITERATURE of the period 1750-1850 is Glausser’s special interest, and he concentrates particularly on the works of William Blake as well as the relationship between philosophy and literature. Yet, he is equally at ease writing articles about contemporary popular culture, including the rock group Jefferson Airplane, rock singer Paul Kantner and detective novelist Dashiell Hammett. Walker Gilmer, DePauw professor of English and whose office is next to Glausser’s, said, “Students flock to his classes on any level because they know they will find a professor who is both demanding and caring, a mentor who will un-

The board has scheduled a special 4 p.m. meeting this Thursday, with Reid Nolle of the Greene as tie Development Center and project engineer Stanley asked to attend to provide input. The claims requested for payment included the balance ($8,479) due Reynold Inc., Paoli, on the city’s water loop project. Included in the claim was a change-order that increased costs by $1,320 for 132 feet of 12-inch PVC water line and 16 feet of 16-inch PVC force main. The project engineer’s signature, however, has not authorized those changes. City Attorney Larry Wilson noted. Wilson also said he questioned whether residents affected by the water loop work have had property restored following construction. He

WAYNE GLAUSSER Professor of the Year obtrusively push them to think freshly and critically about both familiar and unfamiliar subjects, to explore and articulate their ideas... Wayne’s teaching strategies are so successful and the relationships he builds with students so exceptional that they regularly line up outside his office in hopes of getting into one of his classes before the registration process begins.” Glausser has written articles on numerous topics, and students are quite likely to hear about the topics in their classes. “I don’t believe that

specifically mentioned a damaged fence and a driveway that was caving in following construction. The attorney said he would like to have a letter from the project engineer (Stanley) noting that all such work has been done satisfactorily. ALAN STANLEY & Associates has also submitted a $22,207 claim for its engineering work on the big water loop and the Fillmore Road project. The engineering portion is complete, but some grant documents are still outstanding, according to Nolte, the mayor said. The claim was thus tabled. Also tabled was a Reynold Inc. claim for $61,163 as final payment on the big water loop project. The claim, however, failed to include a Reynolds signature or that of the

I need to separate my teaching from my research and writing because I like to introduce to my class the kinds of topics I’m working on,” he said. ONE OF THE THREE former students to write nominations of Glausser, wrote; “His classes are rarely lectures. Instead, he begins each discussion with a question about a controversial point in the text. He then leads the discussion with further questions which push the students further into their ideas.” This is not the first honor earned by Glausser, who joined DePauw University in 1980. He was named Outstanding Professor in the Humanities at DePauw for 198384, and his colleagues have awarded him sole responsibility for the Honor Scholar freshman seminar this year. He was the recipient of the Prize Teaching Fellowship, Mary Cady Tew Prize, and Danforth Fellowship while a graduate student at Yale University. He serves this year as a member of the Committee on Faculty. He previously has been vice president and president of the DePauw chapter of the American Association of University Professors, chairman of the Faculty Development Committee, and chairman of the Committee for the Management of Academic Operations. GLAUSSER WAS awarded the A.B. degree with highest honors in literature from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He earned MPhil. and Ph.D. degrees from Yale.

ONE OTHER CLAIM was approved during the hour-long meeting. The board authorized payment of $10,534 as the final portion of funds due Maddox Industrial Contractors Inc., Indianapolis, for work on the Fifth Street lift station. Mayor Harmless and fellow board member Dorothy Crawley were joined at the City Hall session by City Attorney Wilson and City Clerk-Treasurer Judith Berry. Board member Bill Lawrence was absent.

Patches were acceptable for the overall dress code, and if this repair strip was made from gaily-colored calico these backwoods boys never knew they were way ahead of their time for freak fashions for young men. Should you be wondering how the young with limited wardrobes passed the sanitation codes. The answer is that some of them didn’t, but they could get by in the early fall when a window could be kept open.

If the schools agree what to pay professors, it cuts down on the competition. THE SAME IS TRUE for financial-aid packages offered students. If the schools agree how much financial aid to award certain students, it limits a student’s choice, he said. Henry Hector, Indiana’s deputy commissioner for higher education, said forcing students to make choices based on academics rather than funding may not be all bad. He said he’s been in Indiana three years and has never heard of schools having a meeting to set prices. State government and its agencies are exempt from many of the antitrust laws, Freilicher said.
