People in the news D-l-V-O-R-C-E, Hollywood-style LOS ANGELES (AP) Actors Harry Hamlin and Erik Estrada and actress-singer Nell Carter have all filed for divorce from their spouses and each cited irreconcilable differences as the reasons for the dissolutions. Hamlin married Laurie Johnson in March 1985 and they separated last June or earlier, his Superior Court petition said. They have no children. Hamlin, 37, a Pasadena native, has played attorney Michael Kuzak on the television series “L.A. Law” since 1986. In 1987, People magazine dubbed Hamlin the “sexiest man alive.” In his petition, Estrada said he will provide child and spousal support to his estranged wife, Peggy Lynn Rowe Estrada. They were married in August 1985 and separated last November. Their children, Anthony Eric Estrada, 3, and Branden Michael-Paul Estrada, 22 months, currently live with their mother. Estrada, 40, who played Officer Frank “Ponch” Poncherello in the 1977-83 television series “CHiPs,” is seeking joint custody of his children. Ms. Carter, 40, best known as boisterous housekeeper Nell Harper in the early 1980 s sitcom “Gimme a Break,” married George Krynicki on May 14,1982. In her petition she said their separation date is to be determined. • BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Singer John Cougar Mellencamp, 37, barely had time to celebrate the birth of his grandchild to a daughter from his first marriage before his second wife filed for divorce. Victoria L. Mellencamp, 30, Bloomington, filed for divorce Aug. 18, in Monroe Superior Court, The Herald-Times of Bloomington reported. Her attorney, Andrew Mallor of Bloomington, confirmed the action but declined to discuss the case. Victoria Mellencamp filed the petition just four days after the birth of Mellencamp’s first grandaughter, Elexis Suzanne Peach. The child’s mother, Michelle Peach, 18, is the daughter of Mellencamp and his first wife, Priscilla. In her divorce petition, Victoria Mellencamp said her eight-year marriage to the Seymour native should be dissolved due to an “irretrievable breakdown without reasonable possiblity of reconciliation.” She is seeking custody of the couple’s two children, Teddi Joe, 8, and Justice, 4, and “child support in an amount consistent with the style and manner of living to which the children are accustomed.” • LOS ANGELES (AP) Actress Anjelica Huston reportedly paid nearly $2 million for Richard Chamberlain’s house, which the actor is giving up to move to Hawaii for his new TV series “Island Son.” But actor Jack Nicholson isn’t moving in with her, the Los Angeles Timerreported. “Miss Huston will live in her new home without Jack Nicholson, her boyfriend of several years,” her real estate agent, Joe Coons, was quoted as saying. “When I asked her why they lived apart, she said, ‘lt just works out better that way.’ The 3,500-square-foot house near Beverly Hills has two bedrooms, a maid’s quarters and a pool. The home was completely remodeled by Chamberlain in an Oriental motif while he was starring in the TV miniseries “Shogun.”
Zsa Zsa takes on cops in court
LOS ANGELES (AP) Actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, the alluring honey-blonde whose feisty nature and eight trips to the altar command more attention than her occasional movie career, is taking on the Beverly Hills police force. Miss Gabor goes on trial Sept 11 on charges she slapped a Beverly Hills motorcycle cop who she says roughed her up June 14 after stopping her $215,000 Rolls-Royce convertible on a busy thoroughfare. “I TELL YOU MAINLY WHY I go to trial: That this shouldn’t happen to other women,” Miss Gabor said during an interview at her Bel-Air mansion. “They wanted to drop all the charges. And the funny part is they wanted to make, how do you call, civic work for 100 hours. And this guy (Rob Lowe) who made pornographic movies, he only got 20 hours (community service).” Miss Gabor has selected a black Valentino designer dress, black hat and pearls ensemble for her courtroom battle against charges of battery on a policeman, disobeying an officer, driving with an expired license, having an open container of alcohol in her car and having expired car registration. If convicted, she faces a maximum jail term of two years and a $4,000 fine. MISS GABOR HAS TANGLED before with law enforcement. In January, authorities said, she spouted profanities when she was taken off an airliner in Atlanta because her two dogs were loose in the plane. The same thing

EVERGREEN, Colo. (AP) Berke Breathed, who ended his “Bloom County” comic strip last month, is enjoying his escape from daily cartooning, which he calls “a sponge on your imagination.” Breathed, who has a home in Evergreen, has a new, weekly comic strip called “Outland.” In it, he said, “I’m working in die fantasy land of a little girl whose real life is less than real easy.... As ‘Outland’ progresses, people will notice that the landscape changes.” The Pulitzer Prize-winning “Bloom County,” which began in 1980 and featured such characters as Opus the penguin and Bill the Cat, appeared in 543 daily newspapers. Breathed would draw a month’s worth of strips in just a few days, working around the clock. “I realized I was aging much too fast,” he said. • BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Actress Kate Jackson, recovering from breast surgery and getting ready to make a new movie, has bought a house here in sight of her childhood home so she can occasionally get away from it all. “Maybe now more than ever Birmingham is home,” Miss Jackson said. “The people that 1 love the most are there, and to me that’s what home is. “The surgery was a complete success,” she said of the operation two weeks ago to have a malignancy removed. “My recovery has been amazing. I really can’t believe I feel so well. “I think it’s such an incredible thing that they can do the reconstructive surgery right at the time, so you don’t have to go through this incredible trauma that I think women had to go through up until recently,” she told The Birmingham News in a telephone interview from California. Miss Jackson, who starred in “The Rookies,” “Charlie’s Angles,’’and “Scarecrow and Mrs. King,’’ said when she finishes the movie she described as a psychological thriller, she’ll “come home to Birmingham.” • KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Country singer Willie Nelson, who said he’s in the battle to help farmers “for the duration,” has announced his fourth Farm Aid concert will be held somewhere in the Midwest next spring. Nelson is founder and chairman of Farm Aid Inc., which has raised sl2 million with three concerts to support family farmers in the United States. He said *ie intends to continue holding Fanr Aid concerts until the farm crisis is over. “We’re here for the duration,” Nelson said before a non-benefit concert Saturday. “That means when fanners get 75 percent of parity.”
happened in 1968 when she illegally brought a dog with her to Spain. “They dragged me off a plane with the dog and put me in jail for a night,” Miss Gabor said, adding incarceration wasn’t so bad. “I spent the night in jail with this wonderful, gorgeous American sailor and we had the best time. We laughed our head off.” She also recalled a run-in with a policeman in London. ? “THIS IS NOT THE FIRST policeman I hit. I hit one in London,” she said. “Then he said, ‘Come here, gorgeous girl, in my arms. A woman who can hit an English policeman I love.’ And he kissed me. “The English are much more civilized.” “Here in Beverly Hills, I was afraid of this policeman. I was raised under Nazi occupation, Russian occupation, and I wasn’t afraid,” she said. The glamorous Hungarian-born actress, who is secretive about her age, looks much younger than her years reported to be between 62 and 70. “I don’t smoke. I don’t drink. I have a good sex life. Why shouldn’t I be beautiful?” she asks. “You only die once. Enjoy yourself.” In October, she will star as the owner of an animal beauty parlor in “Animal Haven,” the latest of what she calls a 50-picture career in Hollywood. Her movie credits include “Moulin Rouge” “Queen of Outer Space,” “Boys Night Out” and “Picture Mommy Dead.”
