Prudhomme wins shootout

CLERMONT, Ind. (AP) Don Prudhomme, Larry Morgan and Darrell Gwynn dominated Monday’s competition at the NHRA’s U.S. Nationals, the 14th stop of the 19-race, $lB-million Winston Drag Racing Series. Prudhomme, winner of the Big Bud Shootout and $50,000 on Sunday, added another $60,000 to the total with a victory over Bruce Larson for the Funny Car title. HE DROVE HIS Skoal Bandit Pontiac to a quartermile time of 5.271 seconds at 270.59 mph to defeat Larson, 5.372 and 260.79. “This race is like the Indy 500,” Prudhomme said. “I’d rather loose every race during the year and win Indy. “To win the Big Bud Shootout and come back the next day and win the U.S. Nationals is a dream come true. The money is fine, but to me, winning Indy is every driver’s dream.” It was Prudhomme’s seventh U.S. Nationals victory, four in a Funny Car and three in Top Fuel. Prudhomme, who has 39 career victories, has announced he will campaign a Top Fuel dragster next season. “I’VE HAD A LOT of wins, but nothing will top the two wins here this weekend,” he said. Like Prudhomme, Morgan scored a sweep. After winning the Mr. Gasket-Hurst Pro Stock Challenge and $50,000 on Saturday, he collected another $30,000 with the first Pro Stock national event title of his career in NHRA-Winston competition. Morgan, of Newark, Ohio, drove the Castrol GTX Oldsmobile to a 7.366 at 185.79 to defeat Bob Glidden at 7.422 and 187.07. Glidden was seeking his fifth straight U.S. Nationals title and was making his 13th consecutive final-round appearance in the event. The nine-time Winston champion has 74 career victories. GWYNN WAS JUST as dominant in Top Fuel, establishing a national record during qualifying and then taking the title with a victory over Dick LaHaie in the finals. Gwynn, of Miami, Fla., had a 5.042 at 280.46 in the Coors Extra Gold dragster to take an easy win over LaHaie who broke a blower drive shaft at the startling line. Gwynn set the NHRA national elapsed time record of 4.981 seconds during qualifying on Sunday. CLERMONT, Ind.
