Cougars could be surprise team

By STEVE HELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor ROACHDALE Will new blood pump new life into the North Putnam High School football program? Cougars fans will find out in Friday night’s opening game at Monrovia, a Class 2A power. THREE NEW FACES are expected to have a major impact upon the 1989 Cougars. First-year head coach Herb King has renewed enthusiasm in North Putnam football and brings a new offense and a defense that will be familiar longtime North fans. King has been optimistic since the opening day of practice, a change of attitude from when he first looked at the program after being hired July 18. “We have a lot more physical talent than what I thought we would have coming in,”

in quarter four. South Putnam and Owen Valley play in the fifth quarter. In the sixth quarter, Edgewood and Cascade square off. North Putnam and Danville are set for the seventh quarter and Cloverdale and Owen Valley the eight Greencastle and Tri-West play in the ninth quarter and South Putnam and Monrovia close the jamboree in the 10th quarter.

the 27-year-old first-time head coach said. But North did not have Daniel and Michael Johnson when King was hired. When the Noth Putnam Community School Board hired Nancy Johnson as teacher and swimming coach, and her husband Al came aboard as a lay coach, the Cougars gained a quarterback, tailback and two linebackers. THE JOHNSONS GIVE North impact athletes at skill positions. Daniel, the quarterback, is naturally expected to have the greater impact “He does a lot of things well. He is very poised for a sophomore, can throw the ball well and takes charge,” King said of the 6-3, 175pound Johnson. Daniel Johnson has quickly won the respect of his teammates. He Continued on AlO

Tiger Cubs surprisingly young

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Greencastle High School has 5436 varsity football record, a winning percentage of .600, under John Fallis. A strong off-season weight training program, the wishbone offense and continuity from top to bottom in the program are the big reasons for those numbers. But Fallis admits that if not for that winning tradition, his 10th Greencastle Tiger Cub football team would be in trouble. “I THINK THE tradition of winning football at Greencastle... we expect to win ball games. The first couple of years I was here there were some games we could have won, but we kind of expected to lose them and we did,” Fallis said. “If I were starting brand new this year, I don’t think we would be as successful as it being my 10th year.” Graduation claimed 14 starters from last year’s 5-5 team that lost a scoring contest with Western Boone in the semifinals of Class 2A Sectional No. 31. Western Boone went on to win the Class 2A state championship. Plus, when the Tiger Cubs opened practice four players came only to say goodbye because their families were moving. “I DIDN’T REALIZE we were as inexperienced as we are until somebody ask, ‘how many starters do you have back on offense?’ and I only counted the three. I was surprised,” Fallis said. “I thought we had more than that back. It seemed like we should have.” Lineman Jamie Robinson and

Eagles have experience, holes

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor South Putnam has never lost a sectional or regional game since the IHSAA adopted the present fiveclass, four-stage playoff system. The Eagles have advanced to the semistate every year. But now the luxuries of last year’s march into the semistate have turned into question marks for this season. COACH MARK WILDMAN played only juniors and seniors while the 10-3 Eagles won their fourth consecutive sectional and regional championships. For the first time in South’s football history not a single sophomore or freshman lettered. Now, however, tailback Tad Christy and tackle Jeremy Sadler are the only returning starters on offense. And defensively only tackles Sadler, Bryan Stevens, linebacker Brad Toney and cornerback Chris Brotherton return. So despite the presence of 16 returning lettermen and 18 seniors, coach Wildman will put some untested players on the field in Friday night’s season opener at Tri-West High School. Game time is 7:30 p.m. “BEFORE THE SEASON (practice) started that was a big question mark,” Wildman said of the underclassmen. “After the first couple of weeks of practice though, we feel a lot better about them (underclassmen) than we did going into the season.” Wildman feels better because the juniors and sophomores have had two seasons of freshman and junior

halfbacks Kevin Barnett and Randy Pettit are the only returning starters on offense. “Joe Tucker alternated some at split end, but we have three true starters back on offense,” Fallis said. THE EXPERIENCE DOESN’T run much deeper on the defensive side. Five are back and three will be in a new positions. John Routh moves from linebacker to end, Kevin Barnett goes from linebacker to strong safety and Jason Luken goes from linebacker to defensive back. Mark Davis at

varsity football. They know South’s system and it has shown up in practice. “We try not to bring anybody along too quick,” Wildman said. “We’ve got some sophomores that are capable of playing varsity right now, but if they can play some reserve (junior varsity) before we bring them up, that’s going to be helpful.” SOUTH’S BIGGEST question

linebacker and Tucker stays in the secondary, although he moves from cornerback to free safety. “I guess the key will be how well some of the sophomores and younger kids play for us,” Fallis said. Sophomores? That’s right, Greencastle will be playing some sophomores on the varsity. “We have a few sophomores who are going to see action, which we haven’t had many sophomores play here,” Fallis said. NOW THE 12 seniors and 12 juniors will hold down most of the

marks are the offensive and defensive lines. “We graduated just as many skill positions, but the skill position people we have coming in are maybe the ones we have the most confidence in,” Wildman said. “We graduated our quarterback, but we wouldn’t have had any problem playing Chris Brotherton (at quarterback) last year.” Yes, Brotherton takes over at quarterback. Clovers to look different By STEVE HELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor CLOVERDALE The numbers are up, some experienced players are back and coach Mike Parks believes this Cloverdale High School football team is ready to play opponents straight. For Friday night when the Clovers travel to Greencastle for the opening game of the season, they will be playing a straight up offense and straight up defense. AFTER TWO SEASONS of experimenting with the offense and defense, coach Parks has returned to the split-back offense and 43 defense he ran two seasons ago. The changes reflect the experience of Cloverdale’s returning personnel at the skill positions on offense and Continued on All
