People in the news Rats better idea for this Ford? LOS ANGELES (AP) caper, Harrison Ford fell into a pit wriggling with thousands of snakes, real snakes. This time out, he crawls through a cavern alive with thousands of rats, real rats. Is that any way to treat the actor whose films have earned more than any star in history? “That kind of stuff doesn’t bother me at all,” says Ford. “The rats didn’t bother me, the snakes didn’t bother me. It’s people I’m scared of.” Ford, 47, might be called The Quiet Star. His laidback demeanor seems out of sync with his starring in five of the eight all-time box-office champions the “Star Wars” trilogy and the first two Indiana Jones adventures. What raises “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” which opens Friday at Ashely Square Twin Cinemas in Greencastle above the previous two sagas is the inspired casting of Sean Connery as Dr. Henry Jones the elder. Ford said he had been unhappy with two earlier scripts for “The Last Crusade,” but the third one charmed him. “I was quite pleased by the direction it took, by the deepening of the character. I was pleased by the relationship that was drawn between Indiana and his father, which makes this film very special.” For a time it appeared that Ford was stuck in lar-ger-than-life hero roles. Then in 1986 he drew an Academy nomination as best actor in a modem drama, “Witness.” Last year’s “Working Girl” proved he could do comedy as well. Meanwhile, many of the “Last Crusade” stunts, including hanging from a cannon as a tank scrapes the side of a canyon, are obviously performed by Harrison himself. Is that wise? “Things are calculated so there’s little risk of real injury,” he said. “Bumps and bruises go with the territory. ... In an action-adventure film you lose sight of your protagonist when you see the back of the head of a stunt person. If I can do (stunts) I’m happy to do them myself.” • MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) Brian Baldinger, an offensive lineman for the Indianapolis Colts football team, has been released on $350 bail after pleading innocent to charges that he jumped up and down on a woman’s car. Baldinger, 30, entered the plea to charges of leaving the scene of an accident, harassment and criminal mischief. Baldinger was driving a rental car when it was struck from behind by a car driven by Ann Marie Cullen, 20, on Wednesday. Cullen told police that after the collision, the 6-foot-4-inch, 270-pound, Baldinger climbed onto the roof of her 1975 Dodge and began jumping up and down, demanding to see her license and registration. She said he then got off the roof and ripped her wallet out of her hand. When she asked for it back, he threw it under her car and drove away. She complained to police, who stopped Baldinger a few miles away.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Television evangelist Billy Graham is getting a spot on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which bears the names of radio, TV, stage and screen personalities. Graham, a native of Charlotte, was one of 15 honorees named during the June meeting of the Walk of Fame’s secret selection committee. A spokesman said Graham, 70, was visiting Hungary after a monthlong crusade in England. He said the evangelist had agreed to be present when his Hollywood star is unveiled Oct 15. Although Graham reaches a larger audience through his television specials, he is being honored for his achievement n radio. • SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) Morton Downey Jr., whose combative, ultraconservative style lifted his talk show from a New Jersey studio to nationwide syndication, announced he has harangued his last guest. MCA Television, WWOR-TV and Quantum Media Inc., joint owners of the show, said in a statement the final episode was taped on June 30. The companies’ statement, released Wednesday, said the show would run no more original segments after Sept. 15, the end of Downey’s contract with the stations carrying his show. The show premiered in the New York area on Oct. 19,1987 and quickly drew attention for Downey’s abrasive style. But ratings began to slip last spring as Downey was involved in a series of highly publicized incidents. Those included charges that he was involved in a scheme to sell shares of a non-existent gold mine and an incident in a San Francisco airport bathroom, in which he claimed he was attacked by skinheads and a Nazi swastika was painted on his face. Airport police called the attack a publicity stunt. PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) but champagne that actor Christopher Reeve used to commission his new sailboat Reeve, 36, who starred in the “Superman” movies, is an avid sailor. He first saw a version of his new 46foot boat at the 1988 Newport International Sailboat Show, but his $500,000 craft was custom-designed with room in the galley to accomodate two cooks. The forward galley was enlarged to accommodate Reeve’s 6- foot-4-inch frame. Reeve named the boat Sea Angel in honor of the “guardian angel” that he says watches over him in his quest for adventure.
