123rd international church convention set at Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Reconciliation between warring factions within the 1.1 millionmember Disciples of Christ is expected to be one of the issues addressed at the 123rd international convention of the Christian Church on July 28-Aug. 2. THE MEETING AT the Indiana Convention Center will mark the first time since 1932 that Indianapolis is host to the church’s general assembly. About 8,000 Disciples of Christ are expected to attend, including 4,400 voting delegates. Disagreements have surfaced in recent years between its traditional constituency, which is moderate to liberal, and its more conservative members. A late May meeting that brought the factions together was held in Turkey Run State Park in western Indiana as preparation for the assembly, according to the Rev. Donald Manworren, deputy general minister for the Disciples. THE MORE THAN 40 participants at the meeting discovered there is a broad spectrum of opinion on most issues, not just two, he said. “They learned they need direct conversation,” Manworren said. And they learned “we will never have full agreement across the church, but we can have respect for differing views.” One of the issues that caused controversy at the Disciples’ general assembly in Louisville, Ky., two years ago was the so-cal-led “Jesus Resolution,” which was formulated by several conservative churches. It asked delegates to affirm that there is no salvation apart from Jesus Christ. ALTHOUGH THE vote was
