Mike Bell of Indianapolis and David McCampbell of Marshall were the only other players at par or better. Bell shot a 71 and McCampbell a 73 for 144. and was one stroke better than he was two years ago when his 67 was good for the first-round lead in this event. “I followed that with a 78, though,” recalled Cunningham, who was 18 at the time. “I’m not such a streaky player anymore,” said Cunningham, who’ll be a senior on the Arizona State goif team in the fall. “I’ve been working on being more consistent.” Cunningham had nine birdies in his round, including the first hole where he stroked a 40-foot putt into the cup.
