Storing your winter clothes DEAR READERS: With the wanner months comes the task of storing away winter woolens and other winter clothing. Mothballs, the old standby, are good for keeping moths away, but did you know that if the moths have already laid eggs in the clothing that the mothballs or moth crystals won’t kill them? This is why it’s so important that clothing should be cleaned or completely brushed first. Clothes that are not properly clean actually attract moths and other insects. Food or drink stains are really tasty to them. Mothballs and crystals should be put in a place that isn’t accessible to children or pets since they often mistake them for candy or something edible. One of my favorite hints is to make a mothball holder using an old nylon stocking or pantyhose. The odor from the mothballs is quite strong so the holder should be hung above the clothing. Since moth crystals are smaller, they can either be placed in a nylon or sprinkled on the sticky side of a piece of t ape and hung above the clothes in a closet. Don’t let mothballs touch any material or buttons. If you have a clothing storage hint, we would be more than happy to hear from you and pass it along to other readers. Heloise PAINT SPLATTERS Dear Heloise: Here is something I do to protect my clothing and hair when painting in my home. I always use a plastic drop doth that adequately protects the flooring, furniture and other goodies, but until recently I was the one, it seemed, that caught most of the paint splatters. No more. Now I get a large plastic leaf bag and cut a hole in the bottom large enough for my head and one hole on each side for my arms. I put the plastic bag on, place a disposable shower cap on my head and away I goNow I come out paint-free like the flooring and furniture does. Chuck Garrett, Lawton, Okla. LAWN PARTY Dear Heloise: My son’s birthday is in the hot summer and I try to do something different each year to make his party memorable. Last year 1 gave him a lawn party. On each child’s invitation I made a special note to the mothers to bring their children’s swimsuits. I hooked the garden hose to a rotating sprinkler and set it in the yard and the children ran through the sprinkler. I had lawn lounge chairs spread on the patio, so when the children were tired of the sprinkler they dried off in thq chairs. This party was a huge success and my son still talks about it. Betty Jo, Phoenix, Ariz. HOME REMEDY Dear Heloise: I remember reading in your beauty book how to make an inexpensive face mask for oily skin. I have loaned the book out and was wondering if you would print the ingredients for me. Thanks. A Reader, Staten Island, N.Y. You are so right, this is an inexpensive face mask for oily skin and is so easy to do. All you need is some oatmeal and a little water. Mix them together until you have a paste with an even consistency and spread it on your face, but stay clear of your eye area. Let the mask dry and then splash your face with warm water to remove it or, if you prefer, use a soft washcloth. After it is all removed, splash a little cool water on your face for a delicious feeling. Your face will feel wonderfully refreshed, clean and smooth.
