Winner decided by final event

By STEVE FIELDS ; Banner-Graphic Sports Editor ; Angie Terry, Monica Koosman .'and Lisa Bright had done all they ; could do for their respective teams 'Tuesday afternoon and the Putnam County Track and Field Meet : championship was still up for • grabs. Terry had won the 100- and 200meter dashes, the long jump and anchored Cloverdale’s winning 400-meter relay team. Koosman had won the 1600- and 3200-meter runs, breaking her own county meet record for the Clovers in the latter. And Bright had thrown the discus for a county meet record and taken second place in the shot put for South Putnam. JUST THREE POINTS separated South Putnam from Cloverdale when the final event, the 1600-meter relay, started. Both coaches had their heads down pacing. John Nees was almost ready to put on a Greencastle purple and gray jacket. Carl Coons may have thought things were going South Putnam’s way when he found a penny in the Greencastle High School Stadium rocks, but it hasn’t lucky enough. “We knew we either had to win it or place second,” coach Coons said. “We couldn’t let Cloverdale place.” Cloverdale clinched the Putnam County Meet championship by a mere 60-59 margin when Greencastle’s Susan Stark pulled away from South Putnam’s runner on the anchor lap of the 1600-meter relay. ) “I THOUGHT WE would win it, but I didn’t think it would be quite as close,” Nees said after Cloverdale’s second straight Putnam County Meet championship. Coons could not be upset with the Eagles. “Greencastle knocked eight seconds off their best time to beat us. We ran a 4:22 (in the 1600relay), which is our best time of the year, so the girls performed,” South’s coach said. The North Putnam varsity soccer team stands 2-4 after Monday night’s 1-0 loss to the Greencastle club, a non-high school affiliated team. Greencastle scored in the first 15 minutes of the game and made it stand up. “Their kids played really inspired ball and just outplayed us,” North coach Ron Price said. North Putnam tried to charge back into the match, even controlled the game offensively, but

Stark in the 1600-relay lifted Greencastle into third place with 51 points. North Putnam finished four with 45 points with Wendy Martin, Kay Phipps and Alison Phipps taking firsts. TERRY AND KOOSMAN accounted for six Cloverdale firsts between them. None of Terry’s individual performances were records, but they accounted for 18 Cloverdale points. “She did what I expected,” coach Nees said. “She came through in the clutch.” Doubling in the meet’s longest races, Koosman simply shattered a record she set last year. After winning the 1600 in 5:52.3, Koosman won the 3200 in a county meet record and Greencastle Stadium record time 0f12:25.4, nearly 26 seconds better than her pervious record of 12:51.6. “She cut 14 seconds off her 3200 time. She was really wanting to get that time down and get that record,” Nees said. BRIGHT’S DISCUS record and Stacy Broadstreet’s stadium record led South’s run for the title. Despite the muddy conditions of

Coach Price was pleased with several Cougars. “Robert Hensley anchored our defense and Robert Hensley, Jason Hartman, Pat Payton and Bill Martin all turned in real solid games and played real well,” Price said. The Cougars managed just three hits, all singles by Brock Barnhart, Justin Galford and Eric Pipes. North is home Thursday against Cloverdale in another WCC game.

the discus ring, Bright managed a record throw of 104 feet, 2 inches, breaking the record of 101 feet, 7 inches set by Melanie Martin of Greencastle in 1982. Broadstreet easily won the 800meter run, but the belief that Greencastle’s Stark was right behind her contributed to a stadium record 2:29.8 performance. Stark charged on the final lap, but Broadstreet had a comfortable 15second lead at the finish. No one hurdler could dominate

Messer’s two records leads South to a fifth straight county crown

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor There were no surprises in the Putnam County Track Meet on a cold and rainy Tuesday at Greencastle High School. Outside of the sprints, there was not much of a race on the track or in the scoring. South Putnam captured what may be an unprecedented fifth consecutive Putnam County championship with ease at Greencastle High School Stadium. The Eagles won eight events, including first and second places in three, and captured at least two scoring positions in 11 of the 13 individual events while scoring 102.5 points. GREENCASTLE’S sprinters accounted for most of its 63 points and one of the three records in the meet. North Putnam scored 37 points and Cloverdale 28.5 with only one first place between them. In fact, when it came to firsts, it was nearly a two-team meet. Paul Clodfelter’s first place for North Putnam in the long jump at 19 feet, TV* inches, was the only thing that kept South Putnam and Greencastle from making it a two-team show. TODD MESSER, Troy Branson and Michael Trusty were doubleevent winners in South’s balanced display of strength in both track and field events. Messer, as usual, ran against the clock in both the 1600- and 3200meter runs and won in both cases. He gained a little extra incentive in the 1600 when it was announced the 1600-meter run in the Putnam County Meet will now be called the “Ray Sears Memorial 1600-meter run. Sears was the state champion mile runner four consecutive years while a student at Greencastle High School in the 1930’5. He later set a world record in the two-mile run and was honored nationally for his victories in masters competition. AND MESSER LIVED up to the level of competition set by Sears. The South Putnam senior won the 1600 in 4:25.2, just two seconds off the meet record time, but a standard for the Ray Sears Memorial 1600-meter run. “I wanted to go not only for the record in the memorial mile, but I was wanting to go for the county record too. It’s still a good time,” Messer said after. Messer’s awareness of his surroundings and coach Wayne Schuetter were keys in breaking the 3200 record set by Eric Woods of Greencastle in 1979 at 9:35.3. “Right before the race started, I asked coach Schuetter, from the third turn, how much time that is between the finish. He told me 30 seconds,” Messer explained after becoming a double winner for the second year in a row. WITH THE SCOREBOARD clock at the east end of the track ticking off the seconds, Messer knew he had to pick up the pace over the final two laps and finished with a 9:35.2 time, a record by one tenth of a second. ‘Todd’s a class act. He’s an allstate runner,” coach Schuetter said. “He’s one of the best in the area, if not the best. Statewide he’s one of the top 10, so you would expect hirn to come out and do well. “We had some other good performances. Some consistency. Some confidence built going into the conference (meet Friday at Danville),” Schuetter added. TRUSTY WAS ANOTHER double-event winner for the second straight year, repeating in both the high jump and 110-meter high hurdles. He won the high jump at six-foot and the hurdles in 16.9 seconds. Branson not only won the discus and shot put, but led a pair of onetwo finishes for South. Branson threw the discus 129 feet, 4 inches for the second straight year and Mike Harris took second place. Branson put the shot 45 feet, 3 inches and teammate Jeremy Sadler took second. Coach Schuetter’s decision not to enter Messer in three events did not open any doors for other county schools, but left a first for another South runner to claim. Zach Clark won the 800 for the second year in a row, pulling away from Greencastle’s Jerrad Kendall on the straightaway for a 2:07.7 winning time.

GREENCASTLE DID well in its strengths, the sprints. Led by Wes Trout’s two firsts, the Tiger Cubs won everything from the 100-meter dash through the 400-meter dash and captured both sprint relays. Trout won the 100 in 11.6 seconds and the 400 in 51.6 seconds. Joe Buis and Randy Pettit gave Greencastle a one-two score with a bang, bang finish in the 200meter dash. Buis won in 23.3 seconds, followed by Pettit in 24.2 seconds and South’s Bill Furby in 24.3 seconds. Buis, Trout, Pettit and Joe Tucker teammed up for a “walk in the park,” on the final event of the night. They closed the competition with a county meet and stadium record time of 3:29.1 in the 1600meter relay, breaking the old mark of 3:31.2 set by South Putnam last year. “I WAS REAL pleased with our performances tonight,” coach Dobson said of Greencastle’s effort. North’s effort was hurt before the meet started. Jim Smith, a consistent winner for the Cougars in the 1600, but an underdog against Messer, watched the meet on crutches because of a foot stress fracture, according to coach Jeff Mendenhall. Cloverdale’s best finish was a second by Jeremiah Lavoine in the 300-meter low hurdles. South’s Bill Furby easily won the event in 41 seconds and Lavoine ran a 42.5. All four county teams return to action Friday night in the West Central Conference Meet at Danville.
