four phases of progressively faster speed brackets. ONE OF THE nine, Canada’s John Jones, passed the rookie test last year and made one unsuccessful qualification attempt. He will not have to take the final driving test before he may drive this year. Another, Kevin Whitesides of Columbia, Mo., drove only 48 laps, with a top speed of 171.886, and was told, in effect, by USAC to go get more expierence. Another driver listed as a rookie is Dale Coyne, who has driven in 31 other Indy-car races at other tracks and has more than $537,000 in career winnings, but he would have to take a full driving test before he is allowed to drive here. So would Bobby Olivero, who hasn’t driven at Indianapolis since his rookie race 12 years ago. DICK FERGUSON, who last drove here in 1980, must complete a 20-lap refresher test Among the veterans entered in this year’s race are a record-tying nine former winners, including defending champion Rick Mears, a reluctant favorite not only to break his own track records in qualifications but also to join teammate A 1 Unser and A.J. Foyt as a four-time winner. Mears set a one-lap record of 220.453 mph and a four-lap mark of 219.198 in winning the pole for a record-tying fourth time last year. He became only the second driver Johnny Rutherford was the first in 1976 and 1980 to win the race from the pole position twice in his career. UNSER, WHO WON his fourth Indianapolis 500 in 1987, and

Danny Sullivan, the 1985 winner, again join Mears on the most successful Indy-car team in history. Car owner Roger Penske has had a record seven winners at the Speedway, including six times in the past 10 years since Mears’ first victory in 1979. Thirteen drivers have combined for more than $6 million in Penske winnings at the Speedway since 1969. Besides the three Penske drivers, the other former winners entered are Foyt, Rutherford, Mario Andretti, Gordon Johncock, Bobby Rahal and Tom Sneva. With veteran Dick Simon’s intention to step down as a driver and concentrate on running the team of Arie Luyendyk and Scott Brayton, Foyt would become the oldest driver in the race at age 54 years and 4 months. Last year, Simon was the oldest known driver in Indy history at 54 years, 8 months. FOYT, WHO HASN’T won a race since the Pocono 500 in 1981, will be trying for his 32nd consecutive start at Indianapolis. Rutherford is second in all-time Indy 500 starts with 24, and Andretti and Unser are next with 23 apiece. Among other drivers entered this year are A 1 Unser Jr., who won at Long Beach and leads the Indy-car season standings with 38 points and $158,690 in prize money after two races. Mears is second with 32 points and SIOI,BOO, and Michael Andretti, Mario’s son, is third with 28 points and $98,390 in winnings. Daily practice will continue through next Friday, with qualifications set for May 13-14 and May 20-21. The fastest 33 qualifiers will start the race.

Fans come out winners, too, in Boston-Texas battle

By The Associated Press Unlike their last tangle in Texas, Roger Clemens and Nolan Ryan didn’t have their hot stuff. “It was a pitchers’ duel over there and it was a hitters’ duel here,” Mike Greenwell said after driving in three runs with his fifth and sixth homers the first off Ryan this year—in leading Boston past Texas 7-6 Friday night. WITH THE SCORE tied 3-3 in the seventh inning, Boston’s Ellis Burks hit a run-scoring single to chase Ryan. Cecilio Guante’s wild pitch with a runner on third made it

Cubs lay down the law to L.A.

By The Associated Press If this keeps up you can start calling him Awesome Dawson. Andre Dawson had his second consecutive 4-for-4 game, including a pair of solo home runs, as the Chicago Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 Friday night. It wasn’t any big surprise. “THE SCOUTING REPORTS out of San Diego (where Chicago played before coming to Los Angeles) on Dawson said he’s hitting anything and everything,” loser Tim Belcher said. In other National League action, it was St. Louis 3, San Francisco 1; Pittsburgh 4, San Diego 2; Philadelphia 7, Cincinnati 0, and Atlanta 6, Montreal 1. The Houston-New York game was rained out. Winner Scott Sanderson went

5-3 and Nick Esasky followed with a two-run single. “Everybody was on edge because of what’s been said and what’s been written since the game in Texas,” Ryan said. “I’m disappointed it was blown out of proportion.” Ryan, 3-2, allowed three hits over eight innings and struck out 11 last Sunday, beating Clemens’ 2-1 on Steve Buechele’s two-run homer. “BOTH GAMES WERE great for the fans,” said Clemens, 4-1. “The fans came out the winner all

five innings, allowing nine hits but only two runs as the Cubs won for the seventh time in their last nine games. Pat Perry allowed one hit in three innings and Mitch Williams pitched the ninth for his ninth save, walking two and striking out two. Cardinals 3, Giants 1 Pedro Guerrero and Tom Brunansky hit sacrifice flies as St. Louis scored twice without benefit of a hit in the top of the eighth inning. Reliever Mike LaCoss walked Vince Coleman to start the inning, then threw wildly trying for a force at second on Ozzie Smith’s bunt. Terry Pendleton walked to load the bases and Guerrero’s sacrifice fly gave St. Louis a 2-1 lead. After Milt Thompson walked to again load the bases, Brunansky delivered another sacrifice fly.

Todd Worrell pitched two scoreless innings for his fourth save. Phillies 7, Reds 0 Juan Samuel homered on the game’s first pitch and Ken Howell held Cincinnati to five hits in eight innings as Philadelphia rocked Tom Browning for seven runs. Rookie Gordon Dillard pitched a hitless ninth after Howell ripped some skin off the side of his big toe while delivering a pitch in the eighth. Browning went 4 1-3 innings, allowing eight hits.
