Sanders’ decision Saturday OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders would be the first true junior to join the NFL without first being dropped from his team if he opts to turn professional as Oklahoma State officials expect “There is to the best of my knowledge some kind of announcement that will be made Saturday as I understand it,” Oklahoma State coach Pat Jones said Wednesday. “I am not saying I know what is going to be said. We will let him (Sanders) say it.” JONES SAID IN a telephone interview from Stillwater that he doesn’t “know exactly how far along that is” when asked if Sanders has an agent, but “discussions are taking place.” “I am going to wait until Saturday before I say anything,” Jones said. “We will find out tomorrow when it will take place.” Oklahoma State Athletic Director Myron Roderick said that Sanders leaving the Cowboys “is not going to be a problem for us because once he gets an agent he becomes ineligible for next season.” “I JUST KNOW that he is going to make an announcement. That is my understanding,” Roderick said Wednesday in a telephone interview from Stillwater. “I became aware of that today.” Sanders was not immediately available for comment. NFL rules prohibit teams from drafting underclassmen before they or their original class has graduated, but most legal experts maintain the league cannot prevent anyone from playing. SINCE SANDERS HAS never redshirted, he would not be eligibile for the regular NFL draft this spring unless he decides to challenge the legality of the draft in the courts or unless the league changes its long-standing policy of not drafting underclassmen. Baltimore still has Colt fans BALTIMORE (AP) Losing the Colts franchise to Indianapolis hasn’t made much difference to the Baltimore area, according to people who answered a poll. And while the Colts still have a cadre of devoted fans here, the public is split over the issue of spending $l5O million or more for a new stadium to attract a replacement NFL expansion team. BALTIMOREANS woke up March 29, 1984, to learn the Colts, after 31 years, had skipped town. After months of negotiations with the city, owner Robert Irsay pulled up stakes and moved the club to Indianapolis. Some of those responding to the poll published Wednesday by The (Baltimore) Evening Sun have strong feelings against the Colts and revel when they lose. Asked how the Colts’ departure has affected Baltimore, 53 percent of those polled said it hasn’t made much difference, while 34 percent said the loss has made Baltimore worse. Only 3 percent said the loss has made Baltimore a better place, while 10 percent had no opinion. “The city didn’t fall apart when the Colts left. Life goes on,” said Wilson O’Neil, 34, of suburban White Marsh, one of several poll respondents who were interviewed by the paper. OTHERS, LIKE Margaret Black, of Morrell Park, miss the good old days, especially on crisp fall Sundays. “Baltimore is a worse place now for people who love sports,” Ms. Black said.
