Calendar of events Thursday Alpha Gamma Alumnae will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 16 at Asbury Towers. Roachdale Lodge No. 602 will have a called meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 16. Work will be in the FC degree. Visiting brethren are welcome to attend. The Putnam County Board of Health will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 16 in the commissioners’ room at the courthouse for a regular session. The meeting is open to the public. Friday Stilesville Chapter No. 554, Order cf Eastern Star, will hold its installation of officers at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 17. Sandra and Robert Hansen will be installed as worthy matron and worthy patron. The public is invited to attend. Putnam County Chapter 1303 of AARP will meet at 1:45 p.m. Friday, March 17 at the Senior Center, 9 W. Franklin St., Greencastle. A 2 p.m. business meeting will be followed by special music. Greencastle Moose Lodge members and their families are invited to a free pizza party 7-9 p.m. Monday, March 17 at the lodge. Roachdale VFW Post 3284 will have a catfish dinner and dance Friday, March 17. Serving will be 5:30-8 p.m. with dancing 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Cost is $6. Saturday The annual Greencastle Jaycees-Hardee’s Easter egg hunt is scheduled Saturday, March 18 at Robe-Ann Park with four agegroup hunts, all beginning at 11 a.m. Groups will be divided into ages: 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and 9-10. Youngsters age two and under will receive an egg but will not take part in the hunts. Some 4,000 eggs will be filled with prizes and more than 400 toys will be awarded to lucky egg hunters. Cloverdale Conservation Club will have a trap shoot Saturday, March 18, starting at 6 p.m. A Men’s Lenten Breakfast is scheduled for 7 a.m. Saturday, March 18 at the Brick Chapel United Methodist Church. Russellville Community Church will have a 5:30 p.m. pitch-in dinner and 7:30 p.m. performance by the One Way Singers Sunday, March 19 at the church. Monday Putnam County Council on Aging will have a dinner meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, March 20 at the Double Decker. It will be for the full Council. Ordering will be from the menu. Business will follow at 7 p.m. with Gerald Warren, vice president, in charge of the meeting. A nurse will be on hand at the Cloverdale American Legion Post for free physical check-ups for senior citizens on Monday, March 20, beginning at 10 a.m. Jerry Harris of the Roachdale Christian Church will conduct 7:30 p.m. services Monday, March 20 at Russellville Community Church. Tuesday The Over 50 Club will meet Tueseday, March 21 at the VFW Post in Greencastle with a carry-in dinner at 6 p.m. Business meeting and entertainment will follow at 7. All members and friends are invited. Washburn Chapter DAR will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21 at the home of Margaret Nelson, 500 N. Arlington St., Greencastle. Holy Week services at Brick Chapel United Methodist Church continue Tuesday, March 21 with Rev. Ray Dixon speaking at 7 p.m. Bill Chapman of Mellot United Church of Christ will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21 during Holy Week services at Russellville Community Church. Everyone is invited. Tots Time free child care, designed for a parents’ morning out, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays. It is held each Tuesday, other otherwise announced, at First Baptist Church, Judson Drive, Greencastle. All children under age five are eligible for the free service. Wednesday Greencastle Commandery KT No. 11 will hold a stated conclave at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 22 at the Greencastle Masonic Temple. A carry-in dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. All Sir Knights, their ladies and families are welcome to attend. Rev. Paul Bowen of First Baptist Church, Greencastle, will be the guest speaker at special Holy Week services, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 22 at the Russellville Community Church. Dear Abby Children having children is sad irony to childless couple

DEAR ABBY: I would like to tell “Grandmother at 33,” whose 16-year-old daughter is about to become a mother, that her advice is too little, too late. She said: “You are about to become a mother at 16. Isn’t that nice? Don’t expect me to be at your beck and call. I’ll baby-sit only when it’s convenient.” These are “words of wisdom” from a mother? Where was she when her daughter needed advice on how not to get pregnant? I don’t mean just contraception, but how to say “NO” in the first place! If this is her oldest child, she too was pregnant at 16, so I guess you can’t teach what you don’t know. I am particularly angry because I am 38 and childless. My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for eight years without success. We have a beautiful home with a spare room that we have been hoping and praying to fill one day with a crib and toys. Ours is a good strong marriage based on love, respect and sharing. We are emotionally, intellectually and financially equipped to handle the responsibility of parenthood. We didn’t postpone having a baby because our careers came first. Neither my husband nor I has a high-pressure job, nor do we want them. My husband is a schoolteacher who loves children. And my fondest dream was to be called “Mommy.” But we didn’t meet and fall in love until we were in our 30s. We have a sad situation in this country where children are having children, and couples like us who would give anything to adopt a
