NCAA tourney draw on Sunday
I.U. should be top seed: Knight
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Indiana has the Big Ten basketball championship preseason forecasters said they couldn’t win, and coach Bob Knight thinks they should be top-seeded in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament. Indiana clinched its leaguerecord 10th outright championship by defeating Wisconsin 75-64 Thursday. THE SEEDINGS FOR the NCAA will be announced Sunday with Indiana fans hoping they’ll be assigned to the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis for the opening round. “If the Big Ten champion doesn’t get the first seed and it’s the best league in the country according to every power rating I’ve ever seen, then why play conference games,” Knight said. “I just think when you are talking about a championship if this league is the best league I think the top seed is just clear cut I don’t think there’s any room for discussion on that.” The Hoosiers weren’t considered a contender in preseason forecasts and Knight made sure his players got that message. AFTER THURSDAY’S game, Knight said his team was greeted the first day of practice with a lockerroom display of “all the predictions of the brilliant basketball prognosticators around the country.”

The Hoosiers, 25-6 and 15-2 in conference play, did little to prove the forecasters wrong early in the season. Syracuse defeated Indiana 102-78 in the semifinals of the Big Apple preseason National Invitation Tournament and a consolation game with North Carolina ended in a 106-92 loss. Indiana, which had allowed the opposition to reach the century mark only once in 17 years under Knight, then dropped a 101-79 decision to Louisville and was 3-4 after losing to Notre Dame 84-71. “I DID PUT ALL that stuff up, about (finishing) sixth or seventh,” he said. “About the third time we had given up 100 points, I got all of it out of there. In ordering the removal of the clippings, Knight said he remarked, “Get it out of there. We’ve made our point maybe too well.” Senior center Todd Jadlow joined his coach Thursday in needling sports writers “for picking us so low. It really gave us incentive to work hard. No one gave us a chance, and here we are. We’ve got a picture of a (Big Ten championship) ring in our locker, and before long we’ll be wearing it.” THE HOOSIERS HAD their championship delayed when Illinois overcame a 13-point deficit in the second half Sunday, recording their second victory of the season over Indiana 70-67 on Nick

Anderson’s 30-footer at the buzzer. “When we played Illinois, we were on the road for six of the previous nine days. We just ran out of gas in that game. We got to the 10-minute mark, and we needed to play four more minutes at that spacing didn’t do it. That’s what cost us the ballgame,” Knight said. “For us to come back, playing against a team (Wisconsin) that’s really playing to get into the NCAA, I’ve got to feel very good about what our kids were able to accomplish in getting themselves ready to play. “I DON’T THINK that every year that the Big Ten is the best league in the country. I’ve never been one to espouse that. But I think this year it has been.” “I wouldn’t call it a miracle,” said senior Joe Hillman, who Knight says deserves the conference’s most valuable player award. “People are just surprised because of the start we had and because of. how we were picked to do. Everybody kind of counted us out.” “Nobody thought we could do it,” added sophomore Jay Edwards, who tops the team in scoring with a 20.4 mark and won two games on last second shots. “We just believed in ourselves.”
