Hutcheson is picked as one of state’s best

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Ann Hutcheson’s high scoring average has been questioned for two Cloverdale High School girls basketball seasons. Some doubted she can play against big-time competition, despite her being recruited by NCAA Division I programs. Now the 5-6 guard will have an opportunity to prove herself against the state’s best senior players. HUTCHESON HAS BEEN selected to participate in Hoosier Basketball Magazine’s Top 40 workout at Marian College on March 12 along with well known players like Courtney Cox of of Noblesville, Final Four MVP Renee Westmoreland from state champion Scottsburg and Sheryl Klemme of state runnerup Benton Central. The players were selected from approximately 1,600 seniors statewide. The selections are based upon statistical evaluation, game observation by coaches and sportwriters during the season and state tournament and all 30 of the voting coaches of the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Coaches Poll were contacted for nominations. Twenty players from the nor--them and southern areas of the state will participate in the first session of the workout from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The remaining players, who live closer to Indianapolis, will workout from 4 to 6:30 p.m. THE TOP 40 WORKOUT is open to the public. Admission is $2. “I would have been surprised if

Schrempf hits winning basket Pacers win road game

SEATTLE (AP) While the Indiana Pacers were getting a new look withhot shooting by Chuck Person and Detlef Schrempf, the home court magic was fading for the Seattle Super Sonics. Person, a 6-foot-8 forward, scored 45 points on 19 of 28 shooting and made four of seven threepointers Tuesday night, and Schiempf’s eight-foot jumper with five seconds gave the Pacers a 108106 victory over the Sonics. “We tried to get the ball to Vem (Fleming). I was the second option,” Schrempf said. “I took it to the middle, (Seattle’s Nate) McMillan jumped in front and I took the little jump shot.” With 15 points and eight rebounds, the former University of Washington star has scored in double figures in all four games since being acquired from Dallas on Feb. 21. Person, a third-year NBA forward who had a game-high 13 rebounds, four assists and five steals, said it made sense for Schrempf to fire away. “Everybody in the building thought I’d get the final shot, but Detlef is a good one-on-one player and he did what came naturally to him,” Person said. McMillan, who scored 13 points and a game-high 11 assists, said Person caught him by surprise. “He hit baskets with guys all over him. I knew he was tough but not that tough,” McMillan said. Coach Dick Versace said he was confident the Pacers would get a good shot in the closing seconds. “Any time a guy like Detlef with his ball-handling skills gets the ball and the other team can’t foul, you’ve got the advantage,” Versace said. Dale Ellis, who led Seattle with 30 points, missed a 3-pointer with one second remaining. It was the third straight victory for Indiana, now 14-40, and the second straight loss at home for Seattle, 33-21. A victory for the Sonics, 22-6 in the Coliseum,

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Indiana Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court order Tuesday, allowing senior forward Robert Lark to play for the Anderson High School basketball team. Lark transferred to Anderson this season after three years at

she had not been in there,” Cloverdale coach Gregg Hammond said. Hutcheson, Putnam County’s alltime leading scorer in girls basketball and sixth coed list with 1,534 points, averaged 21.2 points per game this season for the Clovers. She shot 73 percent from the free throw line, averaged 3.5 assists and 5.9 rebounds per game. She closed her career at Cloverdale with a four-year varsity average of 20.7 points per game. Hutcheson scored a career-high 60 points against Eminence in the sectional as a junior. DESPITE BEING ILL most of the season, Hutcheson scored 30 or more points four times this year. She scored a season-high 37 points against Greencastle at McAnally Center. Hutcheson is the second Cloverdale player to be selected to the top 40. Debbie Mann, now playing at Ball State University, was chosen in 1986. Contrary to some beliefs, the Top 40 workout is not a tryout for the Indiana High School All-Star Team. It does, however, attract college coaches from around the country, as schools such as UCLA, USC and New Mexico as well as many East Coast colleges have scouted the session. Coach Hammond estimated that 15 NCAA Division I schools have contacted Hutcheson over the last two years. Wisconsin, Louisville, Murray State (where Greencastle product Tawnya Pierce plays) and Southwest Missouri State are still trying to lure Hutcheson.

would have boosted them into a second-place tie with Phoenix in the Pacific Division. The lead changed hands 27 times in the game, 19 in the first quarter. After a three-pointer by Ellis and jump shot by Xavier McDaniel snapped a 99-99 tie, the Pacers outscored the Sonics 9-2 in the last 2:15. Fleming’s layin and two free throws by Reggie Miller after a Seattle turnover trimmed the gap to 104-103 with 42 seconds left. Person’s steal and subsequent three-point play put the Pacers ahead, 106-104 with 12 seconds remaining. McDaniel’s 16-foot jump shot with nine seconds left tied the score for the last time. In the closing moments, “we didn’t make the plays, the simple plays,” said Seattle coach Bemie Bickerstaff. “We did some things that were out of character. We had a guy open and didn’t get him the ball. “Despite Person’s heroics, we had a chance to win the basketball game. He shot the ball well and made some big baskets.” McMillan agreed. “We made some dumb decisions,” the Seattle point guard

More of the same could be on tap Friday night The Cavaliers, five games in front of Detroit in the Central Division, outscored the Pistons 34-17 from the free throw line. Mark Aguirre and Isiah Thomas scored 28 points each for Detroit Larry Nance scored 18 points for Cleveland. Trail Blazers 139, Suns 134 Terry Porter, Jerome Kersey and Clyde Drexler were a three-man gang for the Blazers. Hanover wins NAIA game in sth OT

By The Associated Press Hanover College has. a day off to prepare for Thursday’s quarterfinal match at Taylor in the NAIA District 21 playoffs, and after going five overtimes on Tuesday, the Panthers probably can use the rest. Brian Stevens scored 34 points as Hanover outlasted Oakland City 121-111 in the five-overtime marathon Tuesday night.

7-footer decides winner By The Associated Press The mere presence of a 7-footer in the lane is intimidating enough. When he also scores 29 points, he’s unstoppable. “This is the first time I’ve seen him be so offensive-minded,” Indianapolis Chatard coach Tom Stevason said of Lawrence North junior Eric Montross, who led the 12th-ranked Wildcats to a 70-63 victory in the first round of the Indianapolis Hinkle basketball sectional Tuesday night “IF HE’D MOVE, he’d get 35 points every time. Who’s going to stop him?” Montross hit 14 of 16 shots from the field and grabbed 13 rebounds to go with his 29 points. “I think Montross kind of intimidated us, especially in the first half,” said Stevason. “We tried a man in front and a man in the rear defending him, but he’s just too big. He’s good. He’s gotta be good if everyone in America’s after him.” Lawrence North will play Indianapolis Broad Ripple in Friday’s sectional semifinals. Broad Ripple avenged a regular-season loss with a 64-63 victory over Indianapolis North Central in the Hinkle sectional opener. “WE PLAYED A lot better tonight than Friday night,” Lawrence North Coach Jack Keefer said, referring to the Wildcats’ loss to N0.2-ranked Indianapolis Pike in their regular-season windup. “We came out a lot hungrier.” Still, he wasn’t completely happy. “We had a nine-point lead, but there was no reason for that. We should have had a 15-point lead. I was disappointed in our offensive performance.” LAWRENCE NORTH raised its record to 17-4 but didn’t put Chatard away until Todd Richards and Victor Bush hit two free throws apiece in the final minute. Todd Williams had 24 points and Kent Andrews added 15 as Chatard bowed out at 15-6. North Central finished the campaign at 14-7, while Broad Ripple advanced with a 16-5 record. Two free throws by Kevin Lee with 21 seconds to go gave Broad Ripple a four-point lead before Aaron Shelby’s 3-pointer provided the final points for the Panthers. William Taylor led Broad Ripple with 18 points, while Shelby and Tony Barbee also had 18 apiece for North Central. Besides Lawrence North, only two other ranked teams were in action on Tuesday night, including last year’s state tourney runner-up, No. 17 Concord, which opened with a 73-61 victory over North Wood in the Elkhart sectional. THE OTHER RANKED team, No. 14 Valparaiso, crushed winless Wheeler 73-26 at Valparaiso. At Elkhart, Jade Hagen scored 23 points and Jamar Johnson added 19 to lead Concord to its victory over North Wood. Concord’s semifinal opponent will be Elkhart Memorial, a 75-54 winner over Jimtown. AT VALPARAISO, the host Vikings raised their record to 18-3 and will play defending sectional champion Portage on Friday. Valpo got 15 points in its victory over Wheeler, which closed the season at 0-20. Wheeler was led by Clayton Zambori with 8 points. In the second game, Portage slipped past Hobart 52-51 as Doyle Crowe stole an inbounds pass and scored on a layup at the buzzer. The first overtime games in the 1989 tourney were at the DeKalb, South Adams and Switz City sectionals. AT SOUTH ADAMS, Southern Wells beat Bluffton 68-63, and at Switz City, defending sectional champion Shakamak nipped Switz City 58-57, both games in one overtime. At DeKalb, Fremont edged Leo 52-51 in two extra periods.
