Dear Abby Teacher’s language lesson comes from this columnist
DEAR ABBY: A little while ago, I took a break from my job of reading and grading essays written by high school juniors. Their grammar, spelling and punctuation defy description but with the mail you get, you probably have a pretty fair idea. Anyway, I relaxed for a few minutes, scanning headlines and reading Dear Abby, and there it was: “Confidential to Eunice: All men do not cheat on their wives. But it’s a fairly safe bet that the man who says they do, cheats on his.” Abby, I believe what you meant to say was that not all men cheat on their wives, since what you did say stated that there weren’t any men who cheat on their wives, and, unfortunately, we all know better Sorority to make splash in fundraiser Delta Gamma sorority at DePauw University is sponsoring a co-ed Anchor Splash swim meet to benefit sight conservation and aid to the blind at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lilly Center pool. Heloise Sparkling dishes, glasswear
DEAR READERS: Do your dishes and glasses sparkle when you take them out of the dishwasher? If the water temperature is not hot enough, greasy and oily substances become more difficult to remove. There may also be a problem with glassware not drying correctly, which can cause spotting. According to The Soap and Detergent Association, for maximum results, the water temperature of the dishwasher should be at least 130 degrees F. This means your hot-water heater should be set at midrange or 140 degrees F. However, most safety experts agree that 120 degrees F is sufficient. If you have small children or elderly relatives in your home, to prevent accidental scalding by the hot water temperature necessary for the dishwasher, you might check into a dishwasher with a self-heating unit, which will allow you to place the water temperature on the hot water heater at a lower setting. Some tips to ensure good results are: Run the hot-water tap at the kitchen sink for a few seconds to
DEAR MS. CHRISTENSEN: I forgive you for being so “picky,” and regret that my editor lacked the pickiness to pick up on this error. Thus far only you and another sharp-eyed San Francisco Chronicle reader have written to correct me. He wrote: DEAR ABBY: There you - go again. Perhaps you meant to say, “Not all men cheat on their wives.” What you have said is like saying, “All women writing advice columns do not say it that way.” (Some do, including your sister.) JERRY THOMPSON DEAR JERRY: It figures. We both cut the same classes.

clear the line of cold water before turning on the dishwasher. Always run the dishwasher when hot water is not being used tor other purposes, such as washing clothes or taking baths. To find out the temperature of the water being delivered to the dishwasher, do this. Measure the water temperature at the kitchen sink using a thermometer calibrated within water temperature ranges of 100 to 200 degrees. Fill a glass measuring cup with hot water, then place the thermometer in it.
DEAR ABBY: Please settle an argument I am having with all my friends and acquaintances on the subject of “Juniors” becoming “Seniors” when their fathers die. I say “Junior” automatically becomes “Senior” when the father dies. Right? WAITING IN ANNAPOLIS DEAR WAITING: No. According to the revised edition of the “Amy Vanderbilt Complete Book of Etiquette” by Letitia Baldrige: “A ‘Jr.’ usually drops the ‘Jr.’ when his father dies, unless both he and his late father were so well known that to drop it would cause public confusion.”
