Hawks, Malone maintain mastery over front-running Cavs in NBA

By The Associated Press The Atlanta Hawks may be too far behind to catch Cleveland in the Central Division, but they won’t be afraid of the Cavaliers if they face each other in the NBA playoffs. The Hawks became the first team to beat Cleveland three times this season when they defeated the Cavaliers 108-100 Friday night. Atlanta, which has lost once to Cleveland this season, blew 16point lead before outscoring the Cavaliers 11-1 in the final 2:07. Moses Malone scored 11 of his 21 points in the final period, including six during the 11-1 spurt. IN OTHER NBA games, it was New Jersey 129, Philadelphia 127 in overtime; Miami 103, Charlotte 102; Houston 121, Denver 111; Phoenix 135, Boston 126; and Seattle 126, Washington 112. Cleveland still has the best record in the NBA and holds a 6Vigame lead over the Hawks in the Central Division. Ron Harper had 20 points for Cleveland and Larry Nance added 17 for the Cavaliers. Rockets 121, Nuggets 111 Houston beat Denver as Akeem Olajuwon had 34 points and 15 rebounds and Sleepy Floyd hit all five of his 3-point shots. Alex English led the Nuggets with 25 points and Lever finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds.

Bailey, Mount join Rowan in elite 2,000-point club

By HANK LOWENKRON AP Sports Writer Junior Damon Bailey and senior Rich Mount have become the 21st and 22nd Indiana boys high school basketball players to score more than 2,000 points. They joined the elite group Friday, bringing their career totals to 2,015. Northview’s Kenny Rowan, who beat them into the group one week earlier, scored 30 points in a 78-53 victory over Crawfordsville. Rowan, a 6-foot-5 senior, raised his career total to 2,032. Rowan, who made 14 of 20 shots, is now 15th on the state’s boys career list and needs 39 points to pass former NBA star George McGinnis. BAILEY HAD 23 points as eighth-ranked Bedford North Lawrence defeated Evansville Central 71-48. Bailey, who has announced his intention to attend Indiana University, and Mount moved past three former Indiana liigh school stars Friday. The group included Lloyd Bateman, who ended his high school career with 2,000 for Plainville in 1958; Muncie Central’s Ron Bonham and Delphi’s Pat Manahan. Mount, who has signed a letter-of-intent to follow his father to Purdue, scored 38 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Lebanon over North Montgomery 101-80. MARION PIERCE, who ended his career at Lewisville in 1961, is Indiana’s all-time leader with 3,019 points. Mount’s father, Rick, scored 2,595 points for Lebanon and is third on the all-time list behind Arley Andrews, who finished at Terre Haute Gerstmeyer with 2,772 points in 1954. Brent Byrer was high for Bedford, 17-2, with 24 points. His free throw put the Stars ahead to stay during an 11-point run that produced a 30-26 advantage. The Stars were up 32-28 at halftime and pulled away in the third quarter by outscoring Central 19-6 with Bailey scoring 10. No. 1 Terre Haute South and No. 2 Marion, the only remaining undefeated boys teams, both added another notch in the victory column. South, 18-0, overcame a four-point deficit in the final minute to beat Evansville Bosse 70-69. SOUTH TRAILED 66-62 with 52 seconds left and took the lead 70 : 68 on Steve Richardson’s 3pointer with four seconds left. Richardson, who finished with 29 points, also made a 3-pointer with 45 seconds remaining to pull South to within one point. A turnover by Bosse with eight seconds left gave South the chance for the winning shot.
