South Putnam blend of youth, experience
Under new leadership Eagles are expected to use new approach
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Aggressive, hard working and balanced are three adjectives Allan Rains hopes will be applied to his first South Putnam High School girls basketball team after this season. Rains, who has coach tennis, seventh grade girls and boys basketball, freshman and even junior varsity boys basketball at South Putnam, hopes to pick up where Jim Huter left off last year. ‘THE ONLY THING I promised people, and as a coach you hate to make promises, but if nothing else, they are going to play hard,” Rains said. “One thing I really take a lot of pride in, all the cams I’ve coaches, especially in basketball, we play very hard, very aggressive. “That was one of the things we really wanted to improve from last year. Jim really did an excellent job of getting the skills put in. The kids are fundamentally pretty sound, the ones we have. We have 16 kids in all. “But what I really wanted to try to improve on was just the aggressive part and just overall floor play, just really getting after it all over the floor,” Rains explained. THAT IS GOING to take time. The Eagles won’t ready real soon to play that kind of ball. There isn’t a lot of time for a new coach to put in a new system. So South will open the year with a lot of zones and half-court defenses. “But I do want o play some man-to-man as things go on,” Rains said. With four seniors, one junior, a sophomore and even two freshman, this is a pretty young varsity squad. But there is a cornerstone Stacy Broadstreet and Rene McKinney.

The six-foot Broadstreet averaged 15.3 points and 11.6 rebounds per game, shooting 46 percent from the floor, but a weak 47 percent at the free throw line. McKinney, a 5-6 senior, averaged 16.6 points and 6.7 rebounds a game last year, shooting 38 percent from the floor and 56 percent at the free throw line. RAINS IS COUNTING on the experience and leadership of Broadstreet and McKinney to get the Eagles started. “I don’t want people to think we’re going to set everything up around McKinney and Broadstreet,” the coach said. “For instance in shooting, any of the kids have the green light. I say if you have two hands you’re a shooter, that’s my philosophy.” But even Broadstreet and Mc-

Kinney are going to be adjusting to new approaches. Broadstreet will play forward and even some guard this year. “We don’t really have a true center, even though we do have some big (tall) kids,” Rains said. McKinney will run the twoguard position with Rena’ Coons, a 5-4 senior at point “RENE MCKINNEY, I’m really pleased with her. She’s come in with an excellent attitude,” Rains

said. “I couldn’t ask any more from her so far.” Senior leadership is a high prioriety with the new coach. He is trying to take advantage of Broadstreet’s three years of varsity experience by elevating 6-1 freshman Jennifer Teague and 5-10 Lisa Thompson up to the varsity. “Stacy is all the time helping the younger girls,” Rains noted. In addition to Broadstreet, McKinney and Coons, South Putnam

has Tina Husk back from last year’s team. The 5-6 junior is making the transition from pool to hardwood this week. Being a first-year girls varsity coach, the schedule and competition will be new to Rains. Already he has heard Edgewood should be the strongest and tallest team in the West Central Conference and that is South Putnam’s second game. The Eagles open the season Tuesday night at Crawfordsville. Their first

Trainer Danny Whelan of the New York Knicks, not as well known, is moving up and challenging. Whelan sponsored this gem during the 1987-88 NBA season: “When a team loses a must game, it wasn’t a must game.”
