Indiana’s colleges coping with an enrollment boom

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) More students are crowding Indiana’s colleges and universities this fall because they believe a college education is vital to get ahead, according to some educators. Enrollments have increased 4.2 percent over last fall with 10,690 more students, The Indianapolis Star reported Sunday. THERE ARE 265,086 students enrolled this year in the state’s public and private colleges, The Star said. Public colleges enrolled 21.1,540, a 4.3 percent increase over last year and private colleges had 53,546 students, an increase of about 3.7 percent over last year. The University of Southern Indiana in Evansville found it has become popular for hundreds of firsttime college students in the southwestern comer of the state. Degree-seeking freshmen increased 30 percent this year and they are coming from many southwestern Indiana counties where there has been a low college participation rate. SHERRIANNNE 'STANDLEY, vice president f*jr university relations, said housing that was developed privately for students is probably a big reason for the increase. These students probably would not attend if it weren’t for apartments built near the campus, Ms. Standley said. There was a waiting list for the housing this year and the private organization hopes to have another building ready for occupancy next fall. Purdue University’s record enrollment of 34,969 at West Lafayette reflects “increases across the board,” said Purdue registrar Betty M. Suddarth. WHEN IT LOOKED like Purdue was going to have a hefty enrollment increase, administrators begin adding more sections of classes and increasing the size of classes, she said. The increased enrollment has also produced crowded living quarters, Purdue’s registrar added, pointing out that sometimes three students have been assigned to rooms designed for two. “There clearly comes a limit to how many you can handle without additional resources,” Ms. Suddarth said. “There comes a time when you don’t have classrooms or the faculty members to teach the courses.” Purdue has capped enrollments in many of its engineering and technology programs. The university is also beginning to see large increases in the humanities areas and may have to limit enrollments • there too. INDIANA UNIVERSITY campuses also saw big increases this year, including an all-time record in Bloomington. The campus cut off admissions for this fall last spring because of the record number of applicants. “One thing about that record enrollment is that it’s at the sophomore, junior and senior levels and in graduate students, and not at the freshman level,” said Susan Langsdale, executive assistant registrar for the Bloomington campus. Bloomington has seen big increases in freshmen classes the past

several years and that bulge is moving through the system, she said. “Plus, we have also been able to increase the retention of students. We had the highest campus retention rate (79.5 percent) in the IU system this year.” IMPROVED RECRUITING programs and efforts to make the colleges more attractive to students

of all ages has also contributed to the increases, educators said. Indiana’s South Bend campus recorded a 9.2 percent increase in enrollments, up 545 from last year’s 5,902. South Bend registrar Mark C. Grove attributes the increase to an active recruiting staff, a new nursing program and a slight change in the master of business administration degree.

The nursing program allows students to complete their degrees in South Bend instead of transferring to Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. AND THE CAMPUS changed its business master’s program from a master of science in business administration to a master of business administration. “Although it seems minor, the master of business administration is

But he credits the school’s Leadership Education for the Adult Professional (LEAP) for the biggest enrollment increases.
