People in the news Rogers’ party special to ABC COLBERT, Ga. (AP) Entertainer Kenny Rogers had this idea to invite a few famous friends to his 900-acre farm for a weekend of golf, tennis, basketball and fishing and wound up with a prime-time ABC special. “One thing just led to another and we sort of stumbled into the format,” Rogers said of the threeday “Kenny Rogers Classic Weekend.” He and 15 other big-name show business and sports celebrities split into teams and competed in the four events for $400,000 in prize money. GUESTS INCLUDE SINGER Kris Kristofferson, actors James Caan and Lorenzo Lamas, NBA stars Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins and Isiah Thomas, tennis stars John McEnroe, Kevin Curren, Mikael Pemfors and John Lloyd, and golfers Ray Floyd, Lanny Wadkins, Payne Stewart and Hubert Green. The special, airing Monday night, will also includes entertainment by Gladys Knight, the Smothers Brothers and comedian Byron Allen. The festivities were held Sept. 16-18 at Rogers’ Beaver Dam Farms about 75 miles east of Atlanta where there’s an 18-hole, 6,200-yard golf course designed by Rogers, two tennis courts, an indoor basketball court and two lakes stocked with fish. “All my life I’ve participated in sports,” Rogers said. “I love basketball and tennis, and I’ve become obsessed with golf the last few years. I play every day. That’s why I built the golf course. And everybody is a young kid when you play sports.” So Rogers began to formulate his idea. “We had just completed the course last July (1987) and I was not sure how good it was, so I thought I would invite a couple of pro golfers to play here,” said Rogers. “That was in March or April, and the concept was bom.” Rogers said he then thought about tennis, and “John McEnroe came to mind, and I knew he liked to play basketball. That’s when one thing just led to another, we got the idea, and so we said, ‘Why not?”’ TOURNAMENT CHAIRMAN Kelly Jukerman said the first three players contacted were Bird, Jordan and McEnroe. “Each one said it sounded like a lot of fun and that they’d be there,” he said. “The next thing we knew was that we had four of the best basketball players in the world, a bunch of great athletes, and Kenny. King, sporting his familiar guitar Lucille, was scheduled to emcee Sunday’s award show at the Peabody Hotel, but a late flight delayed his arrival and made him the closing act. “All of my life living here in Memphis I’ve never seen so many talented people in one place at one time,” King said. • NEW YORK (AP) Carol Channing and composer Jerry Herman sang “Hello, David!” as Broadway producer David Merrick was saluted as the Man of the Year by the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Channing played the lead in Herman’s “Hello Dolly!,” one of the many hits produced by Merrick, 75. The gala event Saturday at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel raised $1.5 million for the foundation, which is the principal provider of non-govemment funds for diabetes research, said spokesman Sam Rudy. • THIS WEEK’S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY PEOPLE: Britain’s Prince Charles hits the big 40 Monday, while actors Brian Keith, 67, and McLean Stevenson, 59, and Jordan’s King Hussein, 53, also celebrate.
