North Putnam’s Alison Phipps (seated center) signs an NCAA letter of intent to attend and play basketball at the University of Toledo, as her parents Larry (front left)

Phipps receives ride to Toledo

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor ROACHDALE Alison Phipps decided last summer to spend more time with basketball and less time showing cattle. It paid off Wednesday morning. Phipps became the first North Putnam High School girl ever to receive a full-ride athletic scholarship when she signed an NCAA letter of intent to attend and play basketball at the University of Toledo, in Toledo, Ohio. NOT ONLY IS the 6-2 center is North Putnam’s second NCAA Division I scholarship athlete right out of high school. Fred Cox, a 7foot center for the boys basketball team in 1970, was the first. Chet Clodfelter earned an athletic scholarship from Purdue University after he graduated, but initially was a walk-on. The scholarship, worth $32,000 in books, fees and other elements of her education over four years at Toledo, came on the first day of the NCAA early signing period. “We saw Alison as someone who can be a very good player in the future,” Toledo coach Bill Fennelly said. “She is going to be a better college player than a high school player.”

Phipps, who averaged 10.5 points and 11.9 rebounds as a junior, will open her senior season next Tuesday night against Danville as North Putnam’s No. 2 all-time leading rebounder and No. 4 alltime leading scorer. “I THOUGHT ABOUT it, but I never did think it would happen,” Phipps said of receiving the college scholarship. The turning point in Phipps career came after last season’s totals were in the book. Coach Doug Rose encouraged her to play in the Brownsburg Summer League and she did, impressively at that. “Alison gave up some time showing cattle in the summer to play in the Brownsburg League,” Rose said. “I really think the Brownsburg League made all the difference. She dominated there at times.” Coach Fennelly felt Rose’s encouragement was a key element in Phipps’ progress. “Coach Rose is an outstanding coach and I think she’s come a long way. The thing that saved her was coach Rose coming to North Putnam.” PHIPPS DECIDED TO make her dream come true. “I lived up here (North Putnam) during the

Legends being kicked

By HALBOCK AP Sports Writer Because they are down right now, buried at the bottom of the standings, anchored with identical 2-8 records that are among the worst in the league, it has become fashionable in some NFL circles to take shots cheap and otherwise at the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers. You hear that Cowboy coach Tom Landry is too old and Chuck Noll of the Steelers is too stodgy. The whispers are that the game, this complicated, high-tech game that they once ruled so thoroughly, has passed them by. WELL, TRUTH BE known, the game isn’t all that complicated. It’s my big guys against yours, my fast guys against yours, my team’s execution against yours. So maybe what passed Landry and Noll by wasn’t the game, but something much more basic than that. Maybe the troubles of the Cowboys and Steelers aren’t the guys planning the plays, but the ones carrying them out. When the Cowboys and Steelers were doing all that winning, the quarterbacks were Roger Staubach and Terry Bradshaw. That’s a long way from Steve Pelluer (or Kevin Sweeney this week) and Bubby Blister. Receivers like Tony Hill and Drew Pearson and Butch Johnson don’t suit up for the CowColts waive QB INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The NFL Indianapolis Colts have waived quarterback Bill Ransdell and re-signed defensive lineman Don Thorp. Ransdell, waived Tuesday, signed with Indianapolis as a free agent last week but did not dress for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets. The Colts last week also signed quarterback Rick Turner, who played in the 38-14 victory over the Jets.

summer in open gym. I figured if I practiced basketball enough it would pay for my school and showing cows isn’t going to do that,” the senior said. She didn’t totally give up showing cattle. Phipps still appeared in shows around the state and in Kentucky and won a reserve champion. Wilma and Larry Phipps were obviously very proud of their daughtei. “Kids have goals and dreams, but you don’t think they will ever happen,” Wilma Phipps said. And getting a college education paid for... “I thought it was great, myself,” a happy Larry Phipps said. “She worked real hard for it. It was one thing you don’t think about at a school this size, getting a full-ride scholarship.” OUTSIDE OF THE immediate impact of making Phipps a bigger target than she already is for opposing defenses, coach Rose sees her as an inspiration to younger North Putnam athletes. “It’s the best thing ever to happen to North Putnam girls sports,” Rose said. “We have probably the first freshman class I’ve ever coached and I think she will serve as an inspiration for them to work hard.”

boys anymore. And Franco Harris and Lynn Swann haven’t been in Pittsburgh’s offensive set for a long time. MAYBE WHAT’S WRONG with these teams, then, is nothing more than a function of what goes around, comes around. Nobody wins forever. The losing is what makes the winning so sweet. Ask baseball’s Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers, who bounced from sub-. 500 records one year to World Series champions the next. In this era of parity, the talent is spread out instead of being stockpiled. Keep losing and you draft high and assemble top quality players. Then you stop losing and the cycle repeats itself for some other have-nots. If you keep winning, you keep drafting near the bottom every year and you start assembling marginal players. Then the coach could be Vince Lombardi or George Halas and it wouldn’t make much difference. Lombardi and Halas, by the way, never subscribed to the deep thinker school of football. They reduced it to simple terms like blocking and tackling and the suspicion is that all the X’s and O’s and fancydan playbooks notwithstanding, that remains the real essence of the game blocking and tackling. BUT FANS AREN’T interested

Toledo actually found Phipps by way of Notre Dame. Coach Fennelly first saw Phipps’ name and that eye-catching size last year while an assistant coach at Notrte Dame, but that didn’t mean the school would recruit her. “She was one of the girls to look at over the summer,” Fennelly said of the Notre Dame’s situation. ; WHEN FENNELLY MOVED to the Mid-American Conference school, he started looking for post players. His first team Toledo will be young and small. “We lack inside strength. We expect to sign three inside players (during the early signing period),” the coadi said. *• Phipps will be the only player from Indiana in the program. However, the coach hopes to recruit more from the state, as hi? Notre Dame days helped him to learn about Hoosier talent. As a Mid-American Conference (MAC) team, Toledo will play Ball State annually. Toledo will also play at Butler University this year. But as a freshman, Phipps will be going to play at places like Hawaii, Notre Dame and Chicago, as well as the conference schools.

in explanations. They want results, and not the kind the Cowboys arid Steelers are providing. So, in the spirit of America’s love affair with winners, off with their heads. By all means, let’s chuck Chuck and tee off on Tom. Forget their accomplishments. Forget 20 straight winning seasons in Dallas. Forget four Super Bowl championships in six years in Pittsburgh. That’s ancient history. That was then, this is now. And now isn’t very nice in those two towns. Firing the coach would be easy to do. Teams do it all the time. Cincinnati was ready to do it a year ago, when the Bengals were losing with alarming regularity and doing it in distressing fashion. Only the penurious nature of the franchise saved Sam Wyche’s job. Paul Brown, Cincinnati’s chancellor of the exchequer, would have bristled at paying off the last year of the coach’s contract to have him not coach. So Wyche stayed. Now the Bengals are in first place and the coach is a genius. He got smait suddenly, which is about the sarnie way Landry and Noll got dumb, Ed Jucker of Cincinnati posted the best winning percentage for a coacfrin the NCAA basketball tournament for a minimum of 10 games. His squads won 11 and lost one for a .917 percentage from 1961-63.

The game ball will be raffled off at the end of the game with proceeds going to benefit the Putnam County Habitat of Humanity and Clothe-a-Child programs. Tickets are being sold this week and at Saturday’s game for sl.
