Waitz sets marathon record NEW YORK (AP) Ten years ago, Fred Lebow was regretting having invited Grete Waitz to the New York City Marathon. That was before she won the women’s race with a world-best time of 2 hours, 32 minutes, 30 seconds. NOW, LEBOW, RACE director of the world’s largest marathon, is hoping that Waitz, 35, returns next year in quest of a record-extending 10th victory in celebration of the race’s 20th anniversary. Waitz, 35, won the women’s title for the ninth time Sunday in 2:28:07, beating a field that included 1984 Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson of the United States, defending champion Priscilla Welch of Britain and 1988 Olympic fourth-place finisher Tatyana Polovinskaya of the Soviet Union. Asked if she would return next year to the race that has catapulted her into fame and fortune, the Norwegian said at first that she was uncertain, adding that “two years ago, Fred (Lebow) said he would retire if I win for the 10th time.... ” LEBOW INTERJECTED, saying, “I desperately need a 10th win.” “You mean you want to retire?” Waitz said. Lebow laughed. That verbal byplay occurred at Sunday’s news conference for the winners, including Steve Jones of Wales, the men’s champion, with a time of 2:08:20. Monday, at another news conference for the winners, Waitz eased Lebow’s concern about returning, saying, “I have no plans not to return.” “Ten would be a nice round number,” she said. “But I don’t put pressure mi myself. I don’t feel I have to prove anything.” NOT AFTER NINE victories. In 1978, however, she had to prove something to Lebow. At the time, she was one of the world’s premier middle-distance and cross-country runners, but had never run a marathon. At the time, relatively few women were running marathons, with only 250 having started the 1977 New York City Marathon, and there was no money in the sport Waitz was recommended to Lebow by Finnair, one of the race sponsors. At first Lebow agreed to accept her. But when Waitz asked to bring her husband, Lebow said his secretary decided to cancel Waitz’s plane reservation.
