People in the news Brawl erupts on Geraldo set NEW YORK (AP) Geraldo Rivera was hit in the nose by a flying chair on his talk-show set Thursday as he tried to break up a melee involving right-wing “skinheads” and black civil rights activist Roy Innis. The brawl broke out when one of the guests on the show, John Metzger of California, began shouting racist remarks at the audience during the taping and called Innis an “Uncle Tom,” said Jennifer Geertz, spokeswoman for the syndicated “Geraldo’ show. INNIS WALKED OVER TO Metzger, his fists balled, then turned to another young man next to him who was warning him off. Metzger then began to stand and Innis put his hands around Metzger’s neck. Supporters of Metzger then moved toward Innis, punches were thrown and audience members more skinheads among them stormed the set, the videotape showed. “About half the audience emptied in a free-swing-ing melee,” said Ms. Geertz. “Punches were thrown, fists were flying, bodies were flying.” At one point, a chair was thrown and Rivera was struck in the head. Rivera, dabbing at blood on his nose, called for calm as several pushing and shoving matches continued around him. Eventually, studio security escorted the skinheads out, she said, and Rivera resumed the show. Rivera declined medical treatment and taped two more shows, she said. “THESE RACIST THUGS have to know that we’re not backing down,” Rivera said in a statement. “They’re like roaches who scurry in the light of exposure.” The show’s topic was “hate-mongers,” and featured members of the White Aryan Resistance Youth, The American Front and Skinheads of the National Resistance. Other guests included Rabbi A. Bruce Goldman, Innis and Bayonne, N.J. resident Bill Stump and his wife, who said they were attacked and terrorized by skinheads at a PATH train station Saturday night • NORMAL, 111. EDDIE RABBITT Big Apple-bound
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Country music singer Eddie Rabbitt plans to perform in his native New York City on Jan. 27 for the first time in 10 years. Rabbitt, who was bom in Brooklyn and spent his early songwriting years in the borough, is scheduled to entertain at the Bottom Line nightclub in Manhattan, publicist Kathy Gangwisch said Thursday. His hits include “I Love a Rainy Night” and “Drivin’ My Life Away.” LONDON (AP) Veteran actor Sir Alec Guinness has returned to the London stage for the first time in a decade. Guinness, 74, appeared in Thursday night’s opening of “A Walk in the Woods,” by American writer Lee Blessing, playing a Soviet arms negotiator coming to terms with nuclear weapons. The play closed on Broadway in New York earlier this year. Most of Guinness’ recent work has been in films and television. He last appeared in a London theater in Alan Bennett’s “The Old Country” in 1977-78. In 1984, he was Shylock in William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” at Chichester, 70 miles southwest of London. • PHOENIX (AP) A model has filed a $480,000 lawsuit against former New York Jets football star Mark Gastineau, claiming he broke promises and lied to her during their three-year relationship. Jodee Dominici of Phoenix claims in the suit filed Thursday in Maricopa County Superior Court that Gastineau, whom she met in February 1985, talked her into quitting her modeling job to help manage his business and personal affairs. Ms. Dominici, who appeared on the television show “Star Search” in October 1985, says Gastineau told her he was single when he actually was married and failed to tell her about his marital status until they had dated about a month. The suit says Ms. Dominici was 18 years old at the time. It also claims Gastineau took $12,000 she received in personal injury settlements and never returned it to her. Gastineau and Ms. Dominici ended their relationship in January 1988 when Gastineau began seeing actress Brigitte Nielsen. Gastineau resigned from the Jets last month after Ms. Nielsen said she had cancer of the uterus. A biopsy last week showed Ms. Nielsen did not have cancer but had dysplasia, a cellular irregularity, that was treated with cryosurgery.
