WEST LAFAYETTE (AP) - Rain may have slowed the harvest in many areas of the state last week but it bolstered soil moisture supplies that had been dwindling, Purdue University said in its weekly crop report. Subsoil moisture was rated 72 percent short, 26 percent adequate and 2 percent surplus. Topsoil moisture was 11 percent short, 78 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus, state agricultural statistician Ralph W. Nominations sought for county ASCS committee
The Putnam County ASCS office is seeking nominations for Community Committee persons (CMC) from Clinton, Madison, Greencastle, Marion and Warren townships to serve a three-year term. Nominations must be received by Oct. 31. The person nominated must be actively engaged in the production of agricultural products and be willing to serve on the committee. Applications for emergency farm loans being accepted
Applications for emergency farm loans few losses caused by this summer’s drought are being accepted at the Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) office located in Greencastle, FmHA County Supervisor John M. Weaver has announced. ALL 92 INDIANA counties were recently named by Secretary of Agriculture Richard Lyng as eligible for loans to cover part of actual production losses resulting from the drought Weaver said Putnam County farmers may be eligible for loans of up to 80 percent of their actual losses, or $500,000, whichever is less. For farmers unable to obtain credit from private commercial lenders, the interest rate is 4.5 percent. As a general rule, a farmer must have suffered at least a 30-percent loss of production to be eligible for an FmHA emergency loan, Weaver said. Eligibility is extended to individual farmers who are U.S. citizens, and to farming partnerships, corporations or cooperatives in which U.S. citizens hold a majority interest. Loans are limited to family size farm operations. The FmHA office in Greencastle is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
