People in the news Ch. 13 scrubs ‘Favorite Son’ INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The NBC television affiliate in Indianapolis has pulled the plug on a miniseries “Favorite Son” about the meteoric rise of a politician. It would be irresponsible to do so the week before the election, the station’s general manager says. In a message to NBC officials, Mike Coiken of WTHR added that the station considered the scheduling of the six-hour program next Sunday through Tuesday to be “an abrogation of our responsibility to operate in the public interest," “The miniseries depicts everybody in government as morally bankrupt, from the vice president on down. We should not show that and politicians getting assassinated so close to the election,” Corken said. “We shouldn’t try to influence people how to vote with our entertainment programming. “FAVORITE SON” STARS Harry Hamlin as a young and photogenic politician suddenly thrust into the national spotlight. NBC officials in Los Angeles said WTHR is the only affiliate to have scrubbed the miniseries. “Ever since this project came to us, we felt it was a topical piece and the only logical place to play it was right before the election,” said Mike O’Mara, director of NBC’s media relations for special programs. “Most of the advance press we’ve see seems to think so, too.” WTHR will air three movies in place of the miniseries. “I don’t believe in censorship, but this is a case where we would be irresponsible if we air the thing when it’s scheduled,” said Corken. “I’M SURE WE WOULD have gotten negative calls from people if we carried ‘Favorite Son,’ and we’ll get negative calls because we’re not carrying it It's a no-win situation,” Coiken said. In “Favorite Son,” Hamlin, one of the stars of the NBC series L.A. Law, plays a charismatic Texas senator who is wounded during the assassination of a Nicaraguan Contra leader in Washington on live television a week before his party’s national convention. The TV images of the bloodied Sen. Terry Fallon making an impassioned plea on behalf of the Contras catapult him into prominence, and he quickly becomes the favorite for nomination for vice president Investigating the assassination, a jaded detective (Robert Loggia) and his rookie partner (Lance Guest) discover a massive cover-up involving politicians in the highest reaches of the government. A key figure is the senator’s ambitious aide (Linda Kozlowski, from the Crocodile Dundee movies), who will stop at nothing to get her boss into the White House.

PHOENIX (AP) Laser surgery is planned this week for Brigitte Nielsen, whose illness fiancee Mark Gastineau cited as his reason for quitting pro football, the actress’ publicist says. Publicist Joel Brokaw said from Los Angeles that Nielsen did not tell him what her ailment was, but said it was not life-threatening when he spoke with her Monday afternoon. Last week, Nielsen told The New York Times she had cancer of the uterus and planned to enter an unspecified Arizona hospital on Monday for a biopsy. Last week, Gastineau announced he was quitting the New York Jets and football because he wanted to help Nielsen through her illness. The couple flew to Arizona, where his family lives. Gastineau’s estranged wife, Lisa, said Sunday she didn’t think her husband was quitting football because of Nielsen’s illness and said he was exaggerating his fiancee’s illness. • FORT WORTH, Tex. (AP) Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw was given a clean bill of health following medical tests for chest pains and will be back in CBS ’ anchor booth. “Terry has a normal, healthy, 40-year-old heart,” Dr. David Carter, who examined Bradshaw at Harris Methodist Hospital in Bedford, said Monday. “His blood vessels are excellent and the test revealed no problems in that area.” Bradshaw, who led the Steelers to four Super Bowl titles, missed his last two CBS assignments because of the chest ailment. He is scheduled to return for Sunday’s telecast of the Los Angeles Rams-New Orleans Saints game. The tests found a small amount of scar tissue in the middle of Bradshaw’s chest, but Carter said the condition was not serious.
