Meyer, Colts hope to pull right strings against Bucs
By HANK LOWENKRON AP Sports Writer INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Coach Ron Meyer, accused by fans responding to a newspaper poll of being a puppet to owner Robert Irsay, is more concerned with finding how his Indianapolis Colts can rediscover the winning touch. The Colts, 1-5 in defense of their AFC East title, can start turning things around Sunday when Tampa Bay, 2-4, visits the Hoosier Dome. The following week the Colts play San Diego, also 2-4, in a road game. The Indianapolis Star invited fans to answer several questions about the team, including whether Meyer or Irsay is calling the shots. Nearly 91 percent, 1,147 of those mailing in a ballot, thought Irsay was calling the shots while 88 voters thought the coach was making the personnel decisions. “IRSAY IS JUST like George Steinbrenner,” said one of those adding a comment to his vote, comparing the Colts’ owner with the controversial owner of the New York Yankees. “Meyer deserves an Academy Award for best actor when he faces the media and says he is running the team.” Asked about the unscientific poll, Meyer said he hadn’t read the question about who was running the team.

“ This team will bounce back and they’ll play very, very hard,” predicted Meyer this week. “We’ve just got to get it back on its right wheels and headed in the right direction. I know this team has the talent and the character to do that.” THE TWO TEAMS are meeting for the fifth time in the regular season, including last December when the Colts recorded a 24-6 triumph in the final game of the campaign to clinch the division title. The Colts lead the series 3-1. The Colts go into the game ranked 24th in the league in offense with a 269.2 yards per game average and are 22nd in defense, having allowed an average of 351 yards per game. This week the challenge will be to contain quarterback Vinny Testaverde, who has completed 94 of 192 passes for 1,370 yards and five ■ touchdowns this year. However, Testaverde is still having problems working with a young offensive unit and has only 10 NFL starts. He’s been intercepted 14 times and sacked 15 times for 108 yards this season. “HE CAN DO IT all,” Indianapolis linebacker Duane Bickett says of Testaverde. “He can run, he can pass. He can do the things that a great quarterback can do to hurt you. We’ve got to contain him ... He’s the type of guy that gets out

of the pocket and can make the big play by throwing the ball 50 yards down field.” “He’s becoming more aware of things,” says Tampa Bay coach Ray Perkins of Testaverde. “He’s got great field vision. During the course of a game he’s got kind of like a sixth sense.” Meyer is making some defensive adjustments in an effort to limit Testaverde’s effectiveness. Eugene Daniel, who lost his starting job to Chris Goode last week, will be back at right comerback with Goode moving to the left side of the defensive backfield. “We’re giving Willie (Tullis) some time off this week. I don’t like the word demotion,” Meyer said. “What is apparent to me is that Chris Goode is a rising football player on this team, one that has a tendency to make plays and to cover.” TAMPA BAY LOST to Minnesota 14-13 last week when it was unable to line up for a 38-yard field goal try as time expired. However, Perkins was encouraged by a lot of things in the loss including the fact that the Bucs ran for a seasonhigh 177 yards. Rookie Chris Chandler will be making his fourth straight start for Indianapolis. He completed 7 of 11 passes for 71 yards before leaving last Sunday’s game-
