Dear Abby Her ‘lover’ just wants to be her friend

DEAR ABBY: I recently met a very charming gentleman, and we hit it off immediately. I’m 34, divorced, considered great-looking and I’m unattached. He’s 42 (also divorced) and great-looking. I am not accustomed to jumping into bed on the first date, but with him, it was the second date. It was a mutually satisfying experience, and we are dating regularly. However, he keeps stressing a point that I find puzzling. He says, “I believe a man and woman can be ‘just friends’ as well as lovers.” Abby, what makes a man think he can be physically intimate with a woman, and be “just friends”? I do not have sex with my friends. I keep telling him that if a person is “just a friend,” then sex is not even in the picture. Am I old-fashioned, crazy or correct in my thinking? ‘JUST FRIENDS’ DEAR JUST: You are neither old-fashioned nor crazy. In a love relationship, lovers can be friends as well as lovers which is ideal. But a man who has sex with a woman, and keeps reminding her that they are “just friends” is saying, “I enjoy sex with you, but don’t expect this relationship to grow into something more meaningful or permanent like marriage.” Give him high marks for honesty, but don’t say you weren’t forewarned. * * * DEAR ABBY: I am 65 and so is my husband. While I am still working outside the home to make

PROPOSITION ONE THE LEGALIZED GAMBLING AMENDMENT What Is Proposition One? Proposition One is an amendment to the state Constitution that will appear on the ballot on Election Day, November 8. It will be one of three propositions on the ballot that day. What Will It Say? Proposition One will be worded this way: "Shall Section 8 of Article 15 of the Constitution of the State of Indiana be amended by removing the language that prohibits lotteries?" What Does That Mean? From the way that question is worded, it sounds as if all you are going to be voting on when you vote on Proposition One is for or against a lottery. But that is not true. If you vote "Yes" on Proposition One on November 8, you will be voting not just for a state-run lottery ... but you will be voting to allow the legalization of ALL forms of gambling in Indiana, including betting on horse racing, dog racing, and casino gambling. IF YOU DO NOT WANT LEGALIZED GAMBLING IN INDIANA, THEN YOU MUST VOTE ~N O, , ON PROPOSITION ONE ON NOVEMBER 8. Paid For By Indiana Citizens Against Legalized Gambling, Inc. P.O. ends meet, my husband is gambling away a big part of our income in state, national and international lotteries. He doesn’t buy just one lottery ticket; he buys 100 to increase his chances of winning. He enters “contests” that require sending money and more money every time he “wins” a round. He orders merchandise and magazines we don’t need in order to win something. He subscribes to cheaplooking newsletters that promise to send him the “secrets” of how to pick winning numbers. Abby, we could get along very well with our combined incomes if he didn’t gamble, but he denies that he is gambling! He says gambling is going to the races or playing the numbers. Please check with Gamblers Anonymous and ask them if what my husband is doing is gambling. Answer soon. I fear for our future. TIRED WIFE DEAR TIRED: Regardless of how your husband tries to justify his spending money in order to “win” money, the name of this game is “gambling.” You don’t indicate where you live,

Pat Bombei, Greencastle, Mary Anne Bartee, Amo, Eddie Lee, Danville, and Jerry Lee, Greencastle, urge all friends and relatives to attend. They asked that gifts be omitted.

but if there is a Gamblers Anonymous near you, urge him to go. It would be well worth the investment in time. He would soon learn what “gambling” is, and how to control it. * * * DEAR ABBY: I am the mother of an intelligent, attractive, welleducated 32-year-old daughter who is single and has a very successful career. For the first time in her life she is in love. The man is very nice, but, Abby, he is 21 years old. I have mentioned this to many of my friends, and they give me examples of Joan Collins, Priscilla Presley and Cher! Abby, they are in Hollywood, and my daughter is living in the real world. I am worried about the pain that might result due to critical remarks made by friends and family members. I love my daughter very much and want to see her happy. She may have moments of happiness when she’s secluded with her “young man,” but she must work and live with others who may not approve of her choice. What do you think about this “youthful situation”? WELL-MEANING MOTHER DEAR MOTHER: I would trust an intelligent, welleducated, 32-year-old woman who has a successful career to make an intelligent choice for a companion. She may place more importance on “chemistry” than arithmetic, which is her right and her business. She may be sufficiently secure and happy to be totally unaffected by their critical comments. Don’t worry, Mother.

Heloise

Neighbors keep alert DEAR HELOISE: I want to share the way my neighbor and I keep an eye on each other. We are both elderly and live alone. Since I am an early riser and my neighbor is a late riser, this is what I do. When the morning paper comes, I go outside to get it and I toss her paper up onto her porch. This way later in the day if I see her paper still on the porch, I immediately call her to make sure that she is OK. If she sees my paper still on the lawn, she calls to make sure all is well with me. Gertie Smothers, Elko, Nev. You are lucky to have a thoughtfill neighbor. If we would all look out for each other like this, we sure could take a bite out of crime. Heloise AFTER-BABY SHOWER Dear Heloise: We decided to give my friend a baby shower after her baby was bom. This was a shower for the new mom instead of the baby. One guest gave her some “gift certificates” for free baby-sitting time. If the new mom has an errand to run, her friend will baby-sit free of charge. Some of the other gifts were large blouses to cover the slight bulge having a baby gives you, thank-you notes and other stationery, casseroles all ready for the freezer, favorite cassette tapes and even VCR tapes of a favorite movie. We had so much fun that whenever an acquaintance has a baby we will have another “after-baby shower.” The New Mother’s Friend, Memphis, Tenn. Mom did most of the work, so she deserves a shower too! New mothers are sometimes overwhelmed with the baby and all the new things that happen in a home with a new baby. What good friends you are! Heloise Clark-Gardner vows set Oct. 15 Mr. and Mrs. Steven Clark, Greencastle, announce the engagement of their daughter, Tammie J. Clark, to Benjamin B. Gardner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gardner, Greencastle. The bride-to-be is a 1988 South Putnam High School graduate. The future bridegroom, a 1985 Greencastle High School graduate, is employed by Sherwin-Williams Co., Greencastle. The wedding will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 at New Providence Baptist Church. All friends and relatives are invited to attend. A reception will follow at the church. (Editor’s note: An earlier announcement inadvertently omitted the date of the forthcoming wedding.)
