Eagles battle way back into AP top 10
From staff and wire reports Four years ago being ranked among the state’s top 10 Class A programs by the Associated Press writers was a goal for South Putnam. That has changed. “It’s more of a reward now,” coach Mark Wildman said Tuesday morning. SOUTH PUTNAM’S reward for back to back wins over Greencastle and Monrovia is a No. 8 ranking in the Associated Presss Class A poll. The Eagles, 4-2 going into this week’s conference game at Owen Valley, downed Greencastle 24-13 last Friday and Monrovia 156 the week before. South Putnam returns to the top 10 after being out two weeks. The 15-13 loss to Culver Military Academy, a Class 4A school, cost the Eagles votes. “I don’t think we ever really dropped out of consideration because we were always
Razorbacks in 20th spot It’s hardly news for Arkansas to be ranked among the top 20 college football teams in the land. So Coach Ken Hatfield wasn’t about to get excited when this edition of the Razorbacks became the 36th in the 53-year history of the poll to be rated among the elite. “Being No. 20 is nice, but it just means we’re one step away from being No. 21,” Hatfield said. ARKANSAS RAN its record to 4-0 with a 53-10 thumping of Texas Christian last Saturday. Cubs win Danville Invitational crown
DANVILLE Anyone who feared the Greencastle volleyball team would take a nose dive after last week’s loss at North Putnam can relax. The Tiger Cubs won four matches Saturday to capture the Danville Invitational championship. It’s their second title of the season, as they captured the Putnam County Tournament in September. GREENCASTLE downed Danville 15-12, 6-15, 15-10 in the championship game, but the key contest might have been the first, an 8-15, 15-10, 16-14 victory over Avon, a strong squad. “Avon was an extremely good team,” coach Trish Arthur said of the 9 a.m. match ‘They (Avon) hit

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Thoughts while unloading boxes: FORMER GREENCASTLE High School football player Steve Storey is starting at tailback for the Vincennes Lincoln Alices. Story has rushed for 366 yards and four touchdowns in just 57 carries. He’s averaging 6.42 yards per carry, according to statistics provided by WAOV Sports Director Dave Hunter. Story picked up 164 of those yards and two touchdowns on two carries in the first half of the season opener against Princeton. He suffered a sprained ankle at the end of the first half of that game and just recently showed signs of being healthy again. ****** GREENCASTLE’S VOLLEYBALL program will be in the spotlight Thursday night when Butler University goes to Franklin College for a 7 p.m. match. And once the Cubs lost the first game it would have been easy to fold-up and go home. “I was impressed with their determination,” Arthur said. JUST AS SHE would all day, Alison Spencer led the Cubs past the Orioles. Spencer was 66-68 setting and served five points. Katherine Emery was 19-19 hitting with one kill and one unreturned spike and three service points. Mindy Nicholson led the Cubs’ serving with 10 points, followed by Kim Archer with eight, Natalie Ward six, Jenny Black three, Melanie Marlie two and Kim Irwin and Nancv Claar served one point each.

Spencer was 16-16 hitting with three kills and an unretumed spike. Nicholson led Greencastle with seven service points followed by Emery and Claar with six each, Archer four, Black and Ward three and Spencer one.
****** QUICK FIX South Putnam fans will be happy to know Monrovia tackle Matt Everett did not break his ankle after all. While Everett was being loaded into the ambulance, coaches on the field told us in the press box that the ankle was broken. It turned out to be a dislocated ankle and was accidentally popped back into place en route to the hospital. He was on crutches a couple of days, but started in last Friday night’s victory over Edgewood. Also, Monrovia quarterback Tim Pridemore is expected to play in this week’s game against Tri-West at the Hoosier Dome. Pridemore suffered a strained ligament while fighting to keep from being pulled down by South Putnam’s Brad Toney. ****** PLEASE CALL The BannerGraphic would like to begin publishing the little league football and soccer league results again. Would the people running those leagues please write down the scores of their next games and put them in the mail box by the front door. Please include a telephone number so we can contact you if there are any questions.
Monrovia and Tri-West play Friday night at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis. It’s a conference game for Tri-West, but a non-con-ference game for Monrovia. The Bulldogs have finished their conference schedule with a 4-1 record. Tri-West has two conference games remaining Monrovia Friday and at Danville the final weekend of the regular season. UNBEATEN COLUMBUS NORTH and Sullivan were among the five new teams voted into the AP polls. The leaders in each of the five classes remained unchanged from a week ago. Columbus North joined the Class 5A ranking at No. 10 and Sullivan, with a 6-0 record, was voted No. 10 in Class 2A. Also new this week in Class 2A were South Spencer at No. 8 and

CLOVERDALE Led by Brian McCammon’s second place finish, five Cloverdale cross country runners finished in the top 10 Friday in a victory over Northview and Clay City. The Clovers scored 28 points, Northview 38 and Clay City 55. Only a freshman, McCammon ran the 5,000-meter course in 17:53. Although McCammon has been coming on of late, even coach Vince Faulkner was a little surprised by the run. “It was can excellent time for McCammon,” Faulkner said. Jeff Bell took third and Tim Bean fourth for Cloverdale. Jamie Sanders finished seventh and Miah Lavoine rounded out

Greencastle was eliminated by Brownsburg 4-1 on the indoor courts at Wabash College. However, there are only three indoor courts at Wabash College, forcing the tournament semifinals to be delayed untion Monday. Each team’s No. 1 singles player is automatically entered in the state singles tournament and continues to play until he is beaten reguardless of what his team does. “Brent played hard and kept a positive attitude through all three sets,” coach Brad Hayes said. “Coming back to win the second set after losing the first
Eagles beat defending sectional champions
South Putnam and Todd Messer firmly established themselves as favorites in the Green-castle-IHSAA cross country sectional by running away from defending champion Southmont, 23-36, Monday in a dual meet. The victory not only kept South undefeated in dual competition, was its first win over Southmont in five years and ended the Mounties’ dual-meet winning streak at 49 straight. “It was a big one today to beat them by that margin,” a happy coach Kieth Puckett said. As usual Messer led South Putnam’s victory, completing the 5,000-meter course in 15:31, four seconds off his school record, a time slower than some expected, as he was actually challenged for part of the race. Southmont’s Greg Givans was in contention for over a mile of the meet. When Messer reached crest of the up-hill grade Givans was right with him. “It surprised me a lot,” Messer said. “But he was breathing pretty hard, so I tried to take advantage of it on the back that’s where I lost him.” Even Messer was a little disappointed he didn’t run faster in

one so badly demonstrated his mental strengths. “Throughout the season we’ve tried to work on having a strong second set and Brent pulled it off.” BUT HE WAS the only one to do so, because the other four Greencastle entries were beaten in straight sets. “As a team we played a little under par, however, we had to wait until 4:30 p.m. to play since all eight teams had to play on the three indoor courts at Wabash due to the rain delay.
