Colts’ trouble up front

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Forget the skill players. In Jack Trudeau’s mind, the most important people the winless Indianapolis Colts need are offensive linemen to protect him. One person the Colts’ quarterback wants to see in front of him soon is Ron Solt, the holdout Pro Bowl guard. The problem has been magnified by injuries to the two tackles, Pro Bowler Chris Hinton and Kevin Call. “SOLT IS AN All-Pro offensive guard and when you’re missing an All-Pro guard its a tough situation,” said Trudeau, who will make his second start of the season Monday night against the Cleveland Browns. “Certainly you would like to go through a season with the same five guys up there, but obviously that’s not the case this year,” Trudeau said. “It’s tough because teams try to do more things to come and get you in situations when you have linemen out. “From the quarterback’s standpoint, it probably affects you

more than anybody on offense when linemen are in and out or whatever,” Trudeau said. “It’s something we need to get taken care of.” COLT OWNER Robert Lrsay said Solt “wants a lot more money than we’re willing to give.” “He’s shopped around and he hasn’t found anyone else willing to pay what he wants,” lrsay said. “He’s a free agent He can either take what we’re offering, sign with someone else or stay out of football.” Trudeau, who led the Colts to their first playoff appearance in a decade when Gary Hogeboom was injured last year, was on the sideline when Indianapolis dropped its opener to Houston 17-14 in overtime. He was named to replace Hogeboom last week and played most of the game in a 17-13 loss to Chicago. Hogeboom took over late in the first half when Trudeau suffered a rib injury. Then in the second half, Trudeau injured his knee and was replaced by rookie Chris Chandler.

THE COLTS HAVE averaged 227 yards per game on offense, including an average of 102 on rushes by Eric Dickerson. The team has converted only four of 20 thirddown situations and the three quarterbacks have completed 19 of 36 passes, been intercepted three times and sacked seven times for 52 yards. “It’s hard to throw when you’re going backwards and scrambling to survive,” Trudeau said. Solt, a 6-foot-3, 288-pounder, has missed only one start due to injury since joining Indianapolis in 1984. Injuries, however, have disabled Hinton and Call. Hinton saw only limited action in the opener and missed Sunday’s loss to Chicago with a calf injury. He’s listed as questionable for Monday’s game. Call injured his foot against Chicago and is listed as doubtful against Cleveland. “WHEN YOU HAVE key people who are not in there, it’s going to hurt you,” Trudeau said. “You win with your front seven.”

Clemson trying to prove itself

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Clemson is unbeaten and ranked third in the nation, but linebacker Vince Taylor says there are still some people who aren’t sure how good the Tigers really are. Taylor says he is one of them. Clemson and its doubters should receive some answers Saturday when the two-time defending Atlantic Coast Conference champs host No. 10 Florida State in a nationally televised game. “I THINK A LOTof people have their doubts about us being in the position we are in,” Taylor said Wednesday in a telephone interview. “This is a chance to prove to America that Clemson has a good team.” The long-awaited showdown also will help Taylor and the Tigers get a better gauge on just how good they are. “Right now, we’re still testing ourselves,” Taylor said. “We do not know how good we are. At certain times, we look super, and cer-

tain times we just look good. “We are a good team,” he said. “But we want to be a great team. This is going to be a test this weekend.” IN FACT, ITwill be Clemson’s first true test of 1988. The Tigers, 10-2 last year, opened this season with a 40-7 victory over a Virginia Tech team that was 2-9 in 1987. This past week, the Tigers looked unimpressive in beating Division I-AA Furman 23-3. The lackluster victory prompted questions of whether the Tigers were looking ahead to Florida State or had sandbagged it on offense. “The game helped us both mentally and physically,” Taylor said. “It was like, ‘OK guys, that could have messed up our plans.’ If we had of lost, it could have hurt us for the national championship. We have got to get it in gear. “We want to win them a 11... But this is pretty much the biggest game on our schedule except for our in-state rival (South Carolina),” he said.

TAYLOR SAID THEFurman Paladins were “just as good as they looked.” But he acknowledged the Tigers may have been looking just a little ahead but then they’ve been doing that since before the season began. “All summer, we’ve been hush, hush about the (Florida State) game, even though you want to talk about it,” Taylor said. “Now, finally it’s here. Now we can talk about it We’re ready to play.” Taylor is particularly looking forward to taking on the Seminoles,

Michigan has slight advantage on Miami

By The Associated Press Do you know what happened on Sept 8,1984? Even George Bush knows now that date had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor. CLUE:Top-ranked Miami visits No. 15 Michigan on Saturday and Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler provides the following hint “The thing that will hopefully help us is we’re playing on our turf.” Answer: On Sept. 8, 1984, Miami suffered its only road loss Coach Jimmy Johnson. Not counting bowls, Johnson and the Hurricanes have since won 19 straight on the road. Miami also has winning streaks of 13 in a row overall and 33 straight regular-season games. “I’m not so sure that they’re not better than last year’s national championship team,” says Schembechler, whose only 0-2 start in his 26-year coaching career was at

who are 1-1. The 5-foot-11, 220pound junior is from Clearwater, Fla., and played in high school allstar games with “about half” of the players on the Florida State team. Taylor was recruited by the Seminoles, but he did not want to play for an in-state team and opted for Clemson. Taylor was a medical red-shirt his first year after a knee injury. After recovering, he’s been a mainstay in the starting lineup. Taylor had 53 tackles last season, fourth best among returning players this year.
