Hogie’confused, like everyone else in Indy: Meyer says
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) While coach Ron Meyer says he understands the frustration of Indianapolis Colt quarterback Gary Hogeboom, he plans no change in the nine-year veteran’s status as a backup. Hogeboom came into the game briefly after starter Jack Trudeau hurt his ribs late in the first quarter Sunday. But, after Chicago scored the go-ahead touchdown in the final period and Trudeau suffered a twisted knee, it was rookie Chris Chandler who got the call from Meyer. “NOW I THINK HE’S thoroughly confused, as well as everybody else in Indianapolis, by what we were doing,” Meyer said Monday of Hogeboom. “I could see his reaction, how hurt he was. “He was attuned to the game and was ready to do
Walker, Cowboys nip Cards TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) The Cardinals may have moved from St. Louis to Phoenix, but one thing hasn’t changed they still can’t stop Dallas Cowboys running back Herschel Walker. Walker rushed for 149 yards on 29 carries, scored one touchdown and set up the clincher in the fourth quarter as the Cowboys beat the Cardinals 17-14 Monday night in the first NFL regular-season game ever played in Arizona. “Herschel did it almost all by himself. A lot of times, he didn’t have good blocking,” Dallas coach Tom Landry said. “I think he’s going to run this way every week. If we can get him out in the open more, he’ll be devastating.” WALKER TOOK A pitchout and scored on a 3-yard run around left end with 4:35 remaining in the second quarter to put the Cowboys ahead to stay at 10-7. He knocked over a television cameraman in the end zone on the play, sending the man to a local hospital with a bruised arm and cut under an eye. “I hope the guy is OK. I know I took a pretty good shot to the back of the head myself,” Walker said. The 1982 Heisman Trophy winner from Georgia almost did it all himself on a 13-play, 81-yard drive in the fourth quarter. He gained 58 yards on nine carries and got the ball down to the 1-yard line where Steve Pelluer’s quarterback sneak made it 17-7 with 5:23 remaining. “It was a great drive,” said Pelluer, who finished 12-of-24 for 162 yards with one interception. THE DRIVE STARTED with 10:22 left and was delayed for several minutes as the nearcapacity crowd of 67,139 at Sun Devil Stadium caused such a din that Pelluer couldn’t call the signals. “We weren’t trying to encourage the crowd,” Phoenix coach Gene Stallings said. “I tried to quiet them a few times, but it wasn’t that bad. The problem was we couldn’t stop Herschel Walker.” The 98-degree Arizona heat didn’t bother him. “I felt good. During training camp, we ran a great deal in the heat in Dallas trying to get ready . for games like this,” Walker said. PHOENIX, NOW 0-2, seemed to be in position to at least force overtime after closing to 17-14 on Neil Lomax’s 23-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jay Novacek with 3:52 to go in the game. But a pass-interference call on comerback Reggie Phillips on a third-and-12 play gave the Cowboys a first down with 1:50 remaining and they ran out the clock. The Cardinals also hurt themselves with four crucial mistakes, two involving placekicker A 1 Del Greco. He was wide left on a 40yard attempt with 1:27 left in the first quarter and was tackled at the Dallas 16 after a fake field goal try on the half’s final play. “WE WEREN’T SURE we could kick it,” Stallings said. “Del Greco missed one and he wasn’t even kicking that good before the game started.” Phoenix’s rookie running back Tony Jordan also was stripped of the ball by Ed “Too Tall” Jones, who recovered the fumble at the Cowboys’ 27-yard line with 4:46 remaining in the third quarter. And Pro Bowl offensive tackle Luis Sharpe was called for an illegal formation, nullifying a 34yard completion from Lomax to J.T. Smith to the Dallas 9 early in the third quarter. DALLAS HAD TAKEN a 3 0 lead on Luis Zendejas’ 47-yard field goal with 6:55 left in the first quarter. Zendejas, who kicked here at Arizona State from 1981-84 and set the then all-time NCAA scoring record of 368 points, had a 49-yard field goal attempt blocked with 9:23 remaining in the third quarter.
everything he could to help win the game.” But Meyer went with the rookie because of his ability to scramble, something the Colts needed at that time against the Bears’ tough defense, Meyer said. Chandler lasted three plays before Eric Dickerson fumbled at the Chicago 37-yard line. The Bears held on to win 17-13. TRUDEAU WILL AGAIN BE the starter when Indianapolis plays at Cleveland next Monday night, Meyer said. TTie coach said he would have a private meeting with Hogeboom to patch up their differences. Last Wednesday, after Hogeboom’s demotion to backup was announced, he asked to be released by the Colts. “I knew it was a traumatic blow,” Meyer said. “I

knew there was a chance it would throw this team into turmoil. I’m sure he had a hard time understanding it” Trudeau completed only four of 15 passes for 78 yards and was intercepted twice by the Bears. “Look at our offensive production,” Meyer said. “There’s no question we want more. We have to find ways to be more productive offensively. But they are things that can be corrected. That’s what’s encouraging. If I felt they were things that couldn’t be corrected, I’d be concerned. We can do it... we just have to become more proficient.” IN TWO GAMES, THE COLTS have totaled 454 yards in net offense. Dickerson has accounted for 302 of them

Hogeboom and Trudeau have been sacked seven times for losses of 52 yards, and the Colts have made a first down on only four of 20 third-down plays. “I knew it would be a tough hand we dealt him this week,” Meyer said of Trudeau. “I knew with our problems with the offensive fine ... he would feel it a bit. Jack performed in an adequate situation. ” THE OFFENSIVE LINE, HURT from the start by the contract holdout of still-unsigned Pro Bowl guard Ron Solt, also was without Pro Bowl tackle Chris Hinton, expected to return this week from a leg injury. But Kevin Call, the starter at right tackle, suffered a tendon injury against Chicago and is “extremely doubtful” for the Cleveland game, Meyer said.
