People in the news Lewis serious about telethon LAS VEGAS (AP) Jerry Lewis, who’s spent a lifetime making people laugh, was deadly serious as he faced 250 local television personalities from cities across America key players in this year’s Labor Day Telethon. “What probably put me in that hospital five years ago was saying goodbye to those little giants,” said Lewis, referring to his 1982 double-bypass heart surgery and the childnen who’ve been lost to muscular dystrophy in the 22 years he has been raising money through the telethons to fight the crippling disease. Local pledge center phone number is 653-2641 LEWIS UNDERSTANDS the impact of the local TV hosts in his Labor Day entertainment extravaganza. They orchestrate the 15-minute local cutaways each hour on some 200 stations, dubbed by Lewis his “Love Network.” Last year’s telethon raised a record $39,021,723. The annual TV events, which began in 1966 and feature arrays of stars who participate at Lewis’ behest, have raised $443,182,370. This year’s show is scheduled to run from 9 p.m. EDT Sunday until 6:30 p.m. Monday. “This is my one shot at thanking you,” Lewis said. “We are No. 1 because of your dedication. This year our research-and-patient-care budget was over SIOO million, thanks to you.” LEWIS WEPT AT ONE point when Susan and Leonard DeStefano talked of losing their daughter at the age of 6Vi months. “It’s so hard,” he said, hugging the parents. “What we don’t plan on is the Susan and Leonard DeStefanos. We ask of them an outrageous task to relive that pain.” • INDIANAPOLIS (AP) A ticket will be waiting for the late actor James Dean at the Hoosier Dome’s gates Sunday when the Indianapolis Colts meet the Houston Oilers in NFL action. That’s courtesy of Houston coach Jerry Glanville, who is gaining a reputation for leaving famous people tickets at stadium will-call windows. The coach recently left a ticket for Elvis Presley at Memphis’ stadium when the Oilers played an exhibition game there. Glanville, known for wearing black on the sidelines, said he and tight end Jamie Williams may visit Fairmount, Dean’s hometown, to see the Hoosier’s memorial and former high school. Glanville mistakenly has said Dean is “the biggest thing in Indiana that didn’t play basketball.” The actor actually played guard for Fairmount High School’s team before graduating in 1949. An auto crash killed Dean in 1955 when he was 24. He starred in only three films, “Rebel Without a Cause,” “East of Eden,” and “Giant.”

JERRY LEWIS That time again
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Clint Eastwood’s movie about jazz great Charlie “Bird” Parker will have its U.S. premiere in a Kansas City suburb, and two men who performed with the late saxophonist plan to be there. Actor Forest Whitaker, who portrays the Kansas City native in the movie “Bird,” is scheduled to attend the Oct. 9 premiere in Overland Park, Kan., with Max Roach and Dexter Gordon, organizer Delia Young said Thursday. Gordon and Roach played with Parker, a Kansas City native who helped create be-bop and died in 1955 at age 34. Gordon himself starred in a jazz movie, “Round Midnight.” Ms. Young said she was not permitted to say whether Eastwood, who produced and directed “Bird,” would attend the premiere. “Clint Eastwood wants to focus on his star,” she said. “It is verboten to say if he will be there.” • PITTSBURGH (AP) Entertainer David Letterman apologized for an attempt at humor about the recent death of Pittsburgh Steeler founder Art Rooney Sr. “It’s terribly sad, and there’s a little controversy surrounding this because he died during the exhibition season. So does it count?” the host of NBC’s “Late Night With David Letterman” said during Tuesday’s show. Members of the studio audience groaned at the joke, said Letterman publicist Peter Spivey. The apology, made Wednesday night, was directed to the people of Pittsburgh, Spivey said. “It was poor judgment,” Letterman said. “My heartfelt apologies to them.” Rooney, 87, died Aug. 25 from complications of a stroke. He was the last of the National Football League founders. • NEW YORK (AP) “Phantom of the Opera” star Michael Crawford is giving up the ghost, and the lead role in the hit Broadway show will be taken over next month by opera singer Timothy Nolen. Crawford, who hangs up his mask and cape Oct. 8, won the Tony Award for his portrayal of the deformed composer in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s lavish musical. He played the Phantom in London and New York, and may star in the Los Angeles production opening next spring.
