Judge Gray via this newspaper, the BannerGraphic did receive a call about the judge’s alleged arrest in Clay County. THE BANNER-GRAPHIC contacted the Brazil Police, Clay County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police Post in Terre Haute, the latter whose district includes Clay County, and verified there has been no one by the name of ‘Sally Gray’ arrested for any offense. The judge in Hendricks County did propose, Judge Gray said, that since she does do a lot of special judge work involving drunk-driv-ing cases in surrounding counties, perhaps that information was picked up and incorrectly passed on. In any respect, when Judge Gray first heard the rumor, she chose to brush it off. But as time went on, and more elaborate rumors began circulating, she realized it was time to call a halt to the nonsense. “WITH SOME OF the lastest things being said, I have reason to believe the stories were deliberately set,” Judge Gray asserts. But, she still doesn’t know why. “There’s no way a judge can be arrested and for it to be kept secret,” she explains, adding the Judicial Disciplinary Committee would also become involved. “But in this case, absolutely none

of (these rumors) carries the truth,” Judge Gray emphasized. JUDGE GRAY DID recall an incident in recent years where, following a person’s court appearance, they began spreading untruths about her. “I know of one case already,” she said, “but I just ignored it. But all I’ve been hearing lately are so many different rumors.” And for the judge, on a professional and personal level, that is a tough burden to bear. “I WAS JUST SICK about it,” Judge Gray said, recalling her feelings when she heard her name was being dragged through the mud. “I guess because you just don’t want to believe that anyone could believe that of you, and that people are willing to tell those kinds of stories.” Judge Gray said she holds her office in high esteem and would never do anything to mar her years on the bench, either in her personal or public life. “I have always believed that judges have to be accountable for their actions on or off the bench,” she emphasized. “And I also think that the public has a right to hold us up to higher standards. “BUT,” SHE CONCLUDES, speaking on a very personal level, “It really hurts when something like this happens.”
