Uses for old newspaper wrappers DEAR HELOISE: Have you ever wondered if there was a good use for plastic newspaper wrappers? They are perfect to store unused rolls of wrapping paper in, as well as bows and tags. For myself, I find them useful to keep each pair of hose separated. Just plain great to organize with. Nova Walker, Brazil, Ind. They are useful, aren’t they! I like to slip shoes into them before patting them in my suitcase. No dirt and I can see at a glance which pair to grab. Heloise HUMMINGBIRD FEEDER Dear Heloise: With the summer months come the fast-flying hummingbirds. We love to feed them and have several feeders. Unfortunately the hummingbirds aren’t the only ones who er\joy the sugar mixture that goes into the feeder. We have had a terrible time with pesky ants getting into it and making a mess of the feeder. So, I rubbed some baby oil on the support pole that holds up he feeder. I found that the ants can’t get up the pole this way. The oil doesn’t hamper the birds, and once again all is well, he poles should be oiled about every two weeks or so. Homer Happle, Louisville, Ky. INSTANT ICE PACK Dear Heloise: For an instant ice pack, keep a bag of frozen cranberries or peas at the ready. They stay frozen about 45 minutes and the bag is just wonderful for an ice pack. Dear Abby
Tobacco smoke’s not the cat’s meow
DEAR ABBY: Someone asked if secondhand tobacco smoke can affect pets. Here’s my personal experience: Michael Francis, one of my Abyssinian cats, itched and scratched himself raw. His fur came out in great patches and his stomach was bald. My other cat, Alexandra Sugarmouse, sneezed and coughed all her short life. My veterinarian didn’t know what was wrong, and he didn’t try very hard to find out. Then I found another veterinarian. Vet No. 2 asked if I smoked. (I did.) She then asked me to scrub my walls, shampoo my draperies, carpets, upholstery, etc. to get rid of the smoke deposits. And to quit smoking! I quit smoking and followed her instructions. Michael Francis was miraculously cured, but my little Sugarmouse died before she was 2 years old. When people ask why I quit smoking, I tell them. Some laugh. Others say they’d have gotten rid of the cat instead. Most make it clear that they don’t think a cat is worth “all that trouble.” But I see it differently. I had a choice. My cats didn’t. Vet No. 2 said she has other clients whose cats are allergic to tobacco smoke, but I’m the only one who stopped smoking. This tends to support your statement that if smokers don’t consider their children, they are not likely to be concerned about a pet. ELIZABETH THOMPSON, BATON ROUGE DEAR ELIZABETH: Hooray for you. Lest my readers assume that I am implying that all cats are allergic to tobacco smoke, let me make it perfectly clear I am not. (P.S. Sorry about Sugarmouse.) * * * DEAR ABBY: Would anyone be interested in my old Girl Scout uniform? I also have the hat and belt that go with it. I am now 72

years old, which makes my uniform 50 years old. (I guess you could call it an antique.) I thought maybe some Scout organization might want it. I’d gladly send it to anyone who would give it a good home! MILLIE FROM MELROSE, MASS. DEAR MILLIE: I called the national headquarters of the Girl Scouts and spoke with Bonnie McEwan, the director of media information. When I told her about your uniform, she said, “What timing! We would love to have Millie’s uniform! We’ve just established a Preservation Center for just such historic items. Perhaps if you mention it in your column, others will contribute other archival items for the Girl Scout museum.” So, Millie, dear, please send your uniform, belt and hat to: Girl Scouts of the USA, National Historic Preservation Center, 830 Third Ave., New York, N.Y. 11002. * * * DEAR ABBY: In response to the party who wrote about the expression “I could care less,” which I agree should be, “I couldn’t care less,” I want to add that there are many words used in today’s conversation that are grossly misused. employed by Walden Inn, while the bridegroom-to-be is employed by Mann Trucking. He is a 1983 Cloverdale High School graduate. The wedding will take place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 2 at the Cloverdale United Methodist Church with the bride's father officiating. All friends and relatives are invited.
mention a few: People say, “We kept going back and forth.” It should be “forth and back.” (We don’t say, “fro and to” we say, “to and fro.”) When we back a car out of the garage, we go “back, then forth,” but ordinarily, we go “forth and back,” right? Another common error is calling a water heater a “hot water heater.” There is no such thing as a hot water heater no one can heat hot water; hot water is already hot and cannot be heated. Also, most people use the word “indefinitely” incorrectly. They say, “This item will last indefinitely,” meaning that it will last forever. Actually “indefinitely” means “unsure, uncertain, an indefinite amount of time,” but it is used incorrectly to mean “forever.” DICK ZONNEFELD, ARTESIA, CALIF. DEAR DICK: Interesting? Definitely! * * * DEAR ABBY: Regarding unprofessional remarks made to patients, and violations of privacy by socalled “office nurses,” please keep in mind, Abby, that many of these workers are not registered nurses they are just called so by either themselves or the physicians for whom they work. An education in nursing does not automatically guarantee tact, but we nurses do learn subtle ways of posing embarrassing questions to patients. A former nursing instructor of mine resented the free use of the title “nurse” for anyone wearing white in a doctor’s office, so she got her point across by merely asking, “And from what school of nursing did you graduate?” M.V., R.N., 8.5. N., ALBERTSON, N.Y. DEAR M.V.: Thanks for the important reminder: All that glitters is not gold, and all who say, “Yes, Doctor,” are not nurses.
