Sue Rice named new director of Family Support Services

Diana LaViolette, president of Putnam County Family Support Services (PCFSS) has announced the appointment of Sue Rice to the position of Director. Rice assumed her duties cm May 16. A native of Putnam County, Rice comes to PCFSS with a background of volunteer and administrative work with several agencies in the county including CONTACT, Mental Health Association and Planned Parenthood. Most recently she held the position of assistant director in the Career Center at Indiana State University, Terre Haute. “I HAVE A STRONG commitment to my community and am delighted,” Rice said, “to have the opportunity to work with PCFSS, which addresses the problem of family violence through four different programs.” The programs include Tot’s Time, a place where parents can leave children from infants to age 5 with qualified volunteers, 1-4 p.m. Mondays at First Baptist Church. This service, designed to give parents some time for themselves is free and open to all Putnam County residents. A second program, Parent’s Time, is a series of seminars for parents to discuss difficulties they may be experiencing with their children. From presentations, films, videos and sharing they learn skills and methods to influence their children in more positive ways. THE PARENT AIDE Program

Dear Abby

Teen-ager can’t get teacher off her mind

DEAR ABBY: I am a plainlooking, 17-year-old high school girl who will graduate soon. I’m an honor student and have been accepted at our state university, but I hate to go because I am in love with one of my teachers. “Mr. X.” is 14 years older than I am, and I cannot get him out of my mind. I told him I was in love with him and he told me he could not afford to get involved with me because of the rules and my age. He’s not married and he doesn’t have anybody special. We’ve had some long conversations (in his car) when he drove me home from basketball practice. He told me he thought I was an exceptional young woman who could be anything I wanted to be. Abby, all I want to be is his wife. He has never laid a hand on me, and I certainly gave him every chance. I know he has some special feelings for me, but he’s afraid to give in to them. I have dated some guys, but they •seem so immature compared to Mr. X. How can I get him to take me seriously, or get him out of my mind? And should I write to him from college? CRAZY IN LOVE DEAR CRAZY: You can get him out of your mind by thinking about something else. Keep busy, busy, busy until you go to the university and make many new friends. Don’t pursue him. You could get him into trouble. * # * DEAR ABBY: “Cash Only” wrote to say that her daughter, who was “substantially under 18, unemployed and loves clothes,” received a credit card from a major depart-

Hints from Heloise Caring for leather couch not so tough

DEAR HELOISE: I recently purchased a leather couch. I was a little nervous about taking care of it properly, but I learned quickly. Dust and vacuum it often. Don’t ever soak it with water. For emergency clean-up, use a mild liquid dishwashing liquid put a few drops in a gallon of warm water. Wet a soft wash cloth and wring it until it is just slightly damp, then rub the spot lightly. Leather is like wood it needs to be oiled occasionally or it may dry out. To prevent it from cracking and becoming brittle, use saddle soap or an oil specifically made for top-grain leather. I was told that if I follow these directions, I’ll have my couch for a long, long time. —Janice Bartlett, San Antonio, Texas PET WARNING Dear Heloise: I was a pet owner and if I had any idea of the danger my adorable new puppy was in, I would have taken certain measures beforehand to ensure his safety. We have two comfortable recliners in our den area which is the main hangout of my family. My puppy fell asleep under one of the recliners while it was in a reclining position and was killed instantly when the chair became upright. If I decide to get another puppy in

ment store. (“Cash” is a single parent working full-time to support herself and her daughter and is struggling to stay afloat.) She said she phoned the store’s credit department asking if there was an age requirement for credit card holders, and was told there was not. In other words, Mother was stuck for her daughter’s bills. She asked for your comments. You said: “Laws concerning credit extended to unemployed minors differ in the various states, and if there isn’t a law stating a parent is not responsible for merchandise purchased by a minor child, there ought to be.’l Abby, in Illinois there is a law. It’s the Family Expense Act, which makes the head of a household husband or wife or parent, if it’s a single-parent household liable for “family expenses.” The courts have construed this to cover essentials such as necessary clothing. So if the daughter charged exotic perfumes, expensive dresses, furs, etc., her mother would not be liable. But if any necessary garments of a reasonable quality and price, consistent with the family’s established lifestyle, were bought by the daugh-

the future, the den area will be off limits to my pet. There is no such thing as being too careful in a dangerous area when your pet’s life is at stake. Ms. Susan Ransine, Murray, Utah STORAGE TIP Dear Heloise: When I open a can of fruit or vegetables for dinner and cannot eat all of it, I slit the label off of the can, put around the plastic container I am storing the leftovers in, and attach it with a rubber band. Makes it a lot easier to identify. A Reader, Brownstown, Ind. SUBSCRIBE EARLY Dear Heloise: Upon learning the news that our family would be moving to a new city within six months, I decided to try to familiarize all of us with it. I contacted the local paper in the new city and subscribed to it. Upon

tation, shelter and advocacy for victims of family violence. Trained volunteers are on duty 24 hours a day to respond to a call for help. Anyone who has a question about the programs or is interested in information about becoming a volunteer may call 653-4820, 8 a.m.-lp.m. Monday through Friday. A new training program for volunteers is scheduled for fall 1988.

ter, her mother would have to pay for them. JACK E. HORSLEY, ATTORNEY, MATTOON, ILL. DEAR MR. HORSLEY: Thanks for the input concerning Illinois law. It makes sense, and seems fair to me. * * * DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend and I broke up four months ago and I am having a hard time getting over him. He has a new girlfriend now, but he still calls me to talk because he considers me a friend. I really don’t know what he wants from me. Abby, I find it very hard to talk to him because I still care for him and it tears me up to hear him talk about his new love. I would like to tell him to please quit calling me, but I’m afraid it would be a mistake. I really don’t know how to handle this. Please help me. ACHING HEART DEAR ACHING: The next time he calls you, cut the conversation short. And do it each time he calls you. Make it plain that you have no time to talk to him. Although it’s not as honest as coming right out and telling him it’s too painful to listen to him talk about his new love, it’s your right to avoid pain whenever possible. Good luck. * * * Everything you’ll need to know about planning a wedding can be found in Abby’s booklet, “How to Have a Lovely Wedding.” Send your name and address, clearly printed, plus check or money order for $2.89 ($3.39 in Canada) to: Dear Abby Wedding Booklet, P.O. Box 447, Mount Morris, 111. 61064 (postage and handling included).

receiving the paper each day, we each would read through the different sections about all the interesting facts in that area We became familiar with the names of the city officials and what was up and coming in the way of city growth. My children learned that the new city wouldn’t be all that bad since it had several large movie theaters, skating rinks, game parlors and other amusements that seem to dominate their time when they are teen-agers. This helped our family to become more involved with our new city more quickly than if we had just moved and learned about these things from day to day. Sandy Smith, Philadelphia PIERCED EARRINGS Dear Heloise: I have over 50 pairs of pierced earrings and could never store them so that I could quickly see them all and select the best pair to go with my outfit. I’ve solved the problem with a $3 bobbin storage box. It is ta l enough to handle somewhat larger pairs of earrings, and the bottom of each section is curved, which makes it easier to scoop the earrings out. I now own three bobbin boxes which hold 24 pairs each. Now they are kept neatly and are visible in an accessible storage area Linda Kempster, Bowie, Md.
