Dear Abby
: Hoosier girl with everything i still waiting for her next date
: DEAR ABBY: My 20-year-old 'daughter is a beautiful young lady •with a great personality, a terrific figure and everything going for her so it would seem. Her problem: She does not get asked out. Many ■men admire her, but nobody asks [her out. She’s, joined groups at her [college and church hoping to meet eligible men, but still no dates. Some of her friends have told her that men are intimidated by beautiful women, and they hesitate to ask her out because they are afraid of being turned down. Believe me, she would jump at the chance to go to a movie or dinner. Abby, don’t men ask women out anymore? Or is it up to the women to do the asking these days? She’s getting very discouraged because she hasn’t had a date in six months. Any suggestions? INDIANA MOTHER DEAR MOTHER: Yes. Tell your daughter there is nothing wrong with inviting a man out. Most would be flattered, and if she’s as terrific as you say she is, he will ask for a return engagement. Also, a woman [should never give the impression that she’s desperate even if she is. A self-confident attitude will do more for a woman than a pretty face. * * * DEAR ABBY: You once said there is no such thing as a dumb question. Well, I hope you won’t think this is one especially when you find out it’s coming from a 52-year-old married woman. Here goes: I just . purchased a pair of identical lamps to put on a pair of identical tables on either side of my sofa. These lamps have cellophane wrappers on the shades. Should I remove the cellophane, or leave it on? If I left it on, the shades would be protected •from dust. My husband says to take off the [cellophane, as it looks tacky. ; Please answer in the paper, and •don’t mention my name or I would [never live it down. Thank you. ; EMBARRASSED IN ST. PETERSBURG I DEAR EMBARRASSED: With [a husband as smart as yours, ; you don’t need to write to Dear •Abby. * * * I DEAR ABBY: I share an apart- ; ment with a girl who has two cats. ;I am not particularly crazy about •cats, but I can live with them. The [ problem is the litter boxes. She has [one in the bathroom and one in the ; kitchen, and you can smell them • before you see them.

I am now buying a two-bedroom house. I would like this girl to share the house with me, but I don’t want the odor of cats permeating the place. I know if I tell her that the litter boxes should be cleaned more often she’ll clean them once, then forget about it until I remind her again. We’ve been through this several times. My question: Would it be acceptable if she were to move into my house with me to ask her to keep the litter box in her bedroom? NO CAT LOVER DEAR NO: Acceptable, yes. Workable, unlikely. You have already learned that your roommate is able to tolerate the odor of cats permeating the place. If you can’t, either be prepared to change the litter box yourself or learn to live with the odor, because it would only be a matter of time before your entire house would smell. (And if you have a basement, move the box there.) * * * DEAR ABBY: Here’s a question that would probably be best answered by the women who read your column. What are women’s attitudes toward men who have lost their hair? Can bald men still be considered sexy, handsome and “hunks”? Or must a man go through the hassles of hair pieces, transplants, etc., if he wants to catch a woman’s eye? Finally, are men like Sean Connery, Yul Brynner and Telly Savalas merely flukes, or can men be sexy after they lose their hair? LOSING MINE DEAR LOSING: Much depends on what else a man has going for him. (Hair alone does not a lover make.) Further, sexiness lies in the eye of the beholder. It’s always been my conviction that a man owes his sexiness to what's in his head not what’s on it.

Birth control device gets FDA’s approval
WASHINGTON (AP) The cervical cap, a birth control device that works something like a diaphragm, has won Food and Drug Administration approval for prescription in the United States. It already is widely used in Britain and other countries and has been tried by about 50,000 U.S. women in clinical trials sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. The cap, approved Monday, is a flexible, cup-like rubber device about 1 Vi inches in diameter that is to be fitted by a physician to cover the base of the woman’s cervix. AFTER THE INITIAL fitting, the cap can be inserted and removed by the user and can remain in place for 48 hours, as opposed to a maximum of 12 hours for the diaphragm. Both devices are to be used with a spermicidal cream or jelly, but the cap does not require additional

spermicide before each instance of intercourse. The NIH clinical study found the cap to be about 85 percent effective in preventing pregnancy, comparable to the diaphragm. The approved labeling to be supplied physicians states the cap is to be prescribed only for women with normal Pap tests, which is a test for cervical cancer, and that they are to return for a follow-up Pap test after using the cap for three months. The National Women’s Health Network, an advocacy group, has been pushing for approval of the cap since 1978, arguing that it is as safe and effective as the diaphragm and offers advantages that many women will find appealing. RATHER THAN covering the entire roof of the vagina as a diaphragm does, the cap fits over the tip of the cervix and thus allows for more sensitivity during intercourse.
