Greencastle netters 0-13 on Friday the 13th Being 0-13 on Friday the 13th may be discouraging to the Greencastle High School girls’ tennis team, but coach Irish Arthur was pleased with the way her Tiger Cubs kept battling Thursday as Terre Haute North handed GHS a 4-1 setback. “I was happy with the singles play and overall was pretty satisfied with the way everyone played,” Arthur said. “We worked on positive mental attitudes in this match and we did a good job with that, even when we got way behind. “WE KEPT trying. That has to be a concern at this point of the season. We’re still going at it We’re still improving. We’re still giving it the best we got.” Melanie Marley found success at No. 3 singles, recording her second win of the season in dual competition and third overall. She defeated Melanie Plant in straight sets, 6-3,6-2. Marley was the only Tiger Cub netter that won a set, however. No other Greencastle player won more than two games in any set. GHS plays against another Terre Haute club today as it is at South. Sectional competition begins Friday, May 20, after the postseason meeting to determine the pairings is held this coming Monday. Majority of New Mexicans want Knight there
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) The question many New Mexicans are asking isn’t will he. It’s should he? The man they’re talking about is Bob Knight, Indiana’s basketball coach who reportedly is trying to decide whether to become the new basketball coach at New Mexico. “I think he would be very good for the program,” Michael Brasher, general manager of Albuquerque radio station KANW, said Thursday. “He’s a good coach. He’s strong on academics. The graduation rate of his athletes is very good.” Brasher’s station is asking its listeners to help lure Knight to New Mexico. “We have a card we’re asking listeners to come and sign, urging Bobby Knight to come and coach at the University of New Mexico,” Brasher said. He said that 67 people stopped by to sign the card in the first 40 minutes.

It’s up to Knight: Indiana or New Mexico
BLOOMINGTON (AP) Conflicts with Indiana University president Thomas Ehrlich may be driving Bob Knight toward the basketball coaching job at the University of New Mexico. Knight, in the few interviews he has given since his interest in the New Mexico job became known, has consistently referred to changes at Indiana, particularly in “people.” According to published reports and comments from those who know Knight, he’s referring to Ehrlich, the first-year president “I’m really concerned about the people and there have been a lot of changes here and that’s really concerned me for some time,” Knight
“We’re going to mail it to him and show him there is support here in Albuquerque,” Brasher said. “We’re going to be doing it for a couple of days. Then we’ll get it off to him so that he knows.” The Albuquerque Tribune asked its readers to call and let the newspaper know what they thought about Knight The newspaper said of the 318 people who called, 198 said they were in favor of Knight taking over as head coach and 120 woe against it. One caller simply said, “Yes. Yes. Yes.” Another said, “Definitely hire him. We’ll be in the Final Four next year.” And another said, “We’d be a fool not to take him.” On the other side, one caller told The Tribune, “We do not need his foul mouth and his childlike antics on the basketball court at the University of New Mexico.”
Edwards. “Like Phil Niekro who is going to be in the Hall of Fame, knuckleball pitchers can be 20-18 one year and may be lucky to get to .500 the next,” said Edwards. Candiotti gave up 10 hits Thursday night but he still got his fifth victory and fifth complete game of the season as the visiting Indians beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1. “Knuckleball pitches are going to give up a lot of hits,” said Edwards, whose staff leads the major leagues with 13 complete games. The Indians broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth as Ron Washington tripled in the go-ahead run and then scored on a double by Andy Allanson off Milwaukee reliever Chuck Crim. The Brewers couldn’t bunch their 10 hits at the right time, scoring only in the sixth on BJ. Surhoff’s bloop double and Rob Deer’s single. “My knuckleball was moving just enough to throw their timing off,” said Candiotti, who struck out five and walked one in running his record to 5-1. told The Indianapolis Star in an interview published today. “The clash there at the university has caused him to rethink his entire existence,” said Quinn Buckner, who has remained close to Knight since leading Indiana to the NCAA championship in 1976. Officials in Albuquerque had hoped to name by today the replacement for Gary Colson, who resigned under pressure April 26. But the timetable was pushed back to Wednesday because of what New Mexico athletic director John Koenig called “complexities that have developed during the negotiation process with the candidates for head basketball coach.”

The Brewers have scored only five runs in the three straight losses. Rangers 2, Orioles 1 Jose Guzman and two relievers held off Baltimore as Texas won its sixth straight game. Knight before appearing Thursday night at a sports banquet in Merrillville, told repeaters it was time for him to decide whether he would leave Bloomington after 17 years, during which the Hoosiers have won three national championships and compiled a 385-129 record. “I have not made a decision like that since I’ve been at Indiana,” Knight said. “It’s time to make that kind of decision. It’s a personal decision. I’ll have to leave it at that. I’m not going to get into the whys or wherefores. I’ve got to make it in the next couple of days.” Knight said salary and other financial terms aren’t a factor in
“Absolutely not, no matter how many games he wins,” said another. And another contended Knight is too controversial on women’s issues and has too much of a temper. “This is going to bring trouble,” the caller said. Some members of the university’s Athletic Council also were questioning whether Knight is the right person for the job. “He abuses officials. He throws chairs. He makes sexist remarks. And I just don’t see why we need that kind of a person here at UNM to supposedly upgrade our program,” said Beulah Woodfin, who heads the council. Another council member, law professor Albert Utton, also was critical of Knight “Bobby Knight has a reputation of being the Woody Hayes of basketball, and that means two things: causing embarrassment to his university and abusing his players,” Utton said.
damage Bonds and Bonilla can cause when they get it together on the same night. By The Associated Press Maybe it wasn’t so much the homecoming for Sam Vincent as it was: Three’s the charm. Vincent scored a career-high 31 points Thursday night, complimenting the 36 points of Michael Jordan and leading the Chicago Bulls to a 105-95 victory over the Detroit Pistons in their NBA Eastern Conference semifinal series at the Pontiac Silverdome. The victory sent the best-of-seven series back to Chicago for Games 3 and 4 Saturday and Sunday, tied at one game apiece. Vincent started the season with the Boston Celtics, was traded to Seattle and finally Chicago. In the night’s other game, Dallas beat Denver 112-108, evening that series at 1-1. The two games tonight have the Los Angeles Lakers at Utah and Atlanta at Boston. The Lakers-Jazz series is tied 1-1, while Boston took a 1-0 lead in its series with a 110101 victory over Atlanta Wednesday night Bulls 105, Pistons 95 Vincent scored all but two of his points in the first half, sitting out most of the second half in foul trouble. He hit 11-of-13 shots before picking up his fourth foul with 6:08 left in the third quarter.

that decision. The Star quoted unidentified sources as saying Knight, who is divorced, was considering remarrying and is looking for a major change in his life. The Ivy League-trained Ehrlich is being blamed by some Knight fans for creatihg conditions that would prompt Knight to consider employment elsewhere. Ehrlich has publicly reprimanded Knight twice in less than a year last November, when Knight pulled the team off the court after a dispute with officials during a game against a Soviet squad, and again two weeks ago when Knight, asked during a nationally televised interview how he deals with stress, said, “I think if rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it” The previous president, John Ryan, never publicly reprimanded Knight in 16 years. Ehrlich denied that he and Knight were feuding and said he hoped the coach would spend the rest of his career at Indiana. Ehrlich also denied reports that he planned to place greater emphasis on academics at the expense of athletics. “I think basketball is an outstanding program and I am a big admirer of Bobby Knight’s,” Ehrlich said Thursday. The support reaches so deeply that some legislators even suggested funding for the state-supported university might be cut if the coach left.
game in St. Louis came after the teams played 16 innings the previous night. Cubs 2, Padres 1 Rookie Damon Berryhill hit an RBI double with two outs in the 10th inning, leading Chicago over San Diego at Wrigley Field. Rookie Mark Grace singled with one out in the 10th against Mark Davis, 1-1. After Andre Dawson fouled out, Rafael Palmeiro walked and Berryhill doubled. Berryhill got his first run batted in this season and second in the majors.
Jordan had 12 of his 36 in the third quarter to pick up the slack for Vincent. The closest the Pistons got in the second half was 91-85 with 3:53 to play on a basket by James Edwards, but Jordan scored half of Chicago’s next 12 points as the Bulls led 103-91 with 1:30 left. Isiah Thomas had 25 points for the Pistons, who shot just 38 percent from the field. Mavericks 112, Nuggets 108 Rolando Blackman scored 31 points cm 13-of-23 shooting, helping Dallas hold off several late Denver comeback attempts. Blackman had 15 of his points in the final quarter. Roy Tarpley, Dallas’ sixth man, had 27. Dallas scored 10 straight points midway through the third quarto: Blackman and Derek Harper getting four apiece to lead 71-65 with 4:18 left in the quarter. The Nuggets drew within one point on Mike Evans’ three-point play a minute into the fourth quarter, then trailed by two points two minutes later. James Donaldson and Blackman then hit baskets, and Denver could get no closer than four the rest of the way. Lafayette Lever and Alex English had 22 points apiece for Denver.
