People in the news Huge pay cut moves Maria NEW YORK (AP) Maria Shriver says she took a big pay cut when she went from the canceled “CBS Morning News” to NBC’s “Sunday Today,” while turning down more lucrative offers. Shriver says in an interview published in the May 31 issue of Women’s Day that her drop in pay was “huge.” “But career-wise, the NBC job was what I wanted. ... I think I will make up the money eventually. What I want now is more experience with hard news.” Shriver, daughter of former vice-presidential candidate Sargent Shriver and Eunice Kennedy Shriver, spends weekends in New York working on “Sunday Today,” then jets back to California to be with her husband, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. • LONDON (AP) A movie museum paid $36,828 at an auction for the fringed black dress Marilyn Monroe wore in “Some Like It Hot” as the ukeleleplaying singer in an all-woman band. The skin-tight dress, with its plunging V-neckline and tasseled skirt, was bought Thursday at Christie’s auction house by the Museum of Moving Image, which opens in September. “It’s tacky, but it’s lovely. It’s such a sexy dress,” said David Robinson, film critic for The Tunes of London who made the final bid on behalf of the museum. Bidding began at $5,580 and quickly soared as a model wearing the dress shimmied around to the music of “Running Wild,” which Miss Monroe sang in the 1959 film. The dress was sold by the owner of a museum that closed in Warwick, England. • WEST LAFAYETTE (AP) Popcorn king Orville Redenbacher will, receive an honorary doctor of agriculture degree from Purdue University May 15 for his more than 40 years of com research. “This is truly an honor to receive such a degree from my alma mater,” said Redenbacher, a 1928 Purdue graduate. “After all, Purdue not only pioneered research in popping com hybridization, but they also helped begin my ‘pop to the top’ in the popcorn industry,” said Redenbacher, 80, who now lives in Coronado, Calif. A Brazil, Ind., native, Redenbacher worked as a county extension agent and then as a farm manager in Indiana before establishing Chester Inc., a diversified agricultural company, in Valparaiso in 1952. He marketed his popping com personally, traveling across the country to persuade store owners to carry it and appearing in his own commercials. In 1976 he sold his business to Beatrice-Hunt-Wesson, but he continues to be a spokesman for the label that carries his name.
