Hints from Heloise: New camcorders make home movie-making easy
DEAR READERS: Making your own family treasures by taking home movies of the children growing up, vacations, graduations, birthdays and holidays is easier now with the new camcorders on the market today. In the past, hauling around heavy and bulky video cameras and all their accessories was a nuisance, leading most of us to just take photographs of those memorable events. Well, now you can put away the movie screen and projector for good. With the introduction of the new camcorders, which is a camera and recorder all in one, comes a new way of taping and enjoying home movies. There are no more heavy movie cameras to lug around (most camcorders weigh between 2 and 7 pounds). Most can be attached right to the television set for easy viewing. Some carry a hoot of special features such as automatic focus and light balance for those of us who just like to point and shoot,

instead of having to turn adjustment knobs when lighting effects and character distances change. I never can get all of the settings right. The camcorder offers anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours recording time, with some models offering an extended-play feature. Keep in mind that although the extended-play feature might be beneficial for certain uses, basically the standard play has a better picture quality. A few things to look for when

shopping for a camcorder are: A shutter speed of 1/1000 is good for recording those fast-moving objects like your grandchildren clearly. Hie amount of light needed to record is specified by a number followed by the term “lux” (i.e.7 lux). The lower the number, the less light you will need when taping. No more silent home movies; all camcorders have built-in microphones that tape sound with the video, which means the photographer (including me) must learn not to shout directions! The camcorder is powered by a rechargeable battery pack that lets you record/tape for an hour or more. Some of these units recharge in 90 minutes, while others require recharging overnight. The time it takes to recharge the battery pack unit can be very important, depending on the amount of taping you will be doing. Be sure to check into the recharging factor before purchasing a model that you like.

Hope thia information helps you to record happy family events with ease. Heloise SPECIAL VIDEOS Dear Readers: I would like to tell you about a special sharing of holidays, birthdays and special events that my family has done for the past few years. My uncle has always been knowledgeable about video equipment. He purchased one of the first video recorders with a built-in microphone. Since that time everyone in the family has become a video ham. My uncle tapes family gatherings and we all sit down at the end of the day and eryoy another hour or more of watching each other on tape; it is truly an eryoyable time. We even have a library of past tapes that we can watch over and over again. During events when the whole family cannot be together, we make a duplicate tape and send it to our missing loved ones. This gives all of us the chance to say hello, wish them well and to share our celebration with them.

One such tape of Thanksgiving and Christmas made my sister so homesick that she moved with her family closer to home. Heloise’s Secretary DRESSING TABLE Dear Heloise: When baby has outgrown the dressing table, move the table into the laundry room. The uses for it there are endless. The top of the dressing table is usually vinyl and this is a great place to work on those stubborn stains that need pre-wash treatment. You can also use it as a folding table for clothes right out of the dryer. I have used the drawers and open compartments to store fine washables until I can get to them. There is even one compartment saved just for odd socks until their mates show up. This keeps my laundry room tidy and the top of the washer and dryer clutter-free. Mrs. Cheryl Herbert, La Place. La. CAYENNE PEPPER Dear Heloise: I was recently following a recipe in a favorite cookbook when I came across an entry for red pepper. What is red pepper? I am

unfamiliar with this spice. Justine Hopen, Howard, Colo. Cayenne pepper is now being labeled as red pepper. The spice trade has stopped using cayenne pepper as a labeling term because it didn’t refer to any particular variety, and there was never < “heat” standard for it. Hope this explains it. Heloise DRIED BEANS Dear Heloise: A friend recently told me that she places dried beans into an unfilled pie crust before baking. Why does she do this? Kelly H., El Paso, Texas Dried beans are placed on top of the raw crust to prevent shrinking during baking and to help the crust hold its shape. You should place the beans evenly over wax paper. Naturally, remove the paper and beans before adding the filling! Save these beans; they can be used again. There are aluminum weights or baker’s pellets available in cookware stores and they are used for the same purpose as the beans.
