Pena leads new team past old team

By The Associated Press Tony Pena brought back memories at Three Rivers Stadium for the fans who had forgotten him. Pena, traded from Pittsburgh to St. Louis prior to last season, hit his first two home runs of the season Thursday night as the Cardinals beat the Pirates 9-3. Pena went 3-for-4, scored three times and drove in his first two runs of the year. The Cardinals ended a five-game losing streak, while the National League East-leading Pirates lost for only the second time in 10 games. “It was nice to be back in my old ballpark,” Pena said. “I’ve tried to put the trade behind me and I just

want to forget about that and do my job.” Pena, a three-time All-Star with the Pirates, was a bust last season with St. Louis and hit just .218. Meanwhile, the players Pittsburgh got in the deal Mike Dunne, Andy Van Slyke and Mike LaValliere revived the rebuilt Pirates. “He’s been pressing ever since he got over here,” Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog said. “He wants to be so good sometimes he tries too hard. He makes it difficult on himself because he wants to do so much. “This game was good for him, but I’d like to see him do it for four

Tulane to play hoops in 1990-91 NEW ORLEANS (AP) Three years after a point-shav-ing scandal killed men’s basketball at Tulane University, the school’s board of administrators voted to field a new team for the 1990-91 season. The decision was made on the recommendation of Tulane President Eamon Kelly, who abolished the program in 1985. Kelly said attitudes toward college basketball have changed nationwide. “There has been an improvement in the national climate,” Kelly said. “I think there is a greater awareness now of the guidlines needed, and the need for compliance to them.” Avron B. Fogelman, co-owner of the Kansas City Royals and a graduate of Tulane, was present for the announcement and said he has contributed $1 million to the university as a result of the decision to restore the men’s basketball program. “I asked that my gift be used to help Tulane’s basketball players in the areas of counseling, tutoring and adjusting to pressures facing today’s studentathlete,” Fogelman said. Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk said the search for a coach would begin immediately and he hoped to hire the person chosen by July 1.

Kansas City next stop for winless O’s By The Associated Press Where do the still-winless Baltimore Orioles go from here? Well, their next stop is Kansas City where, having set a majorleague record for consecutive losses at the start of a season, they hope to stop the 15-game plunge that has left them five games away from the overall American League mark for consecutive setbacks. “You can’t believe it; nobody can,” said Scott McGregor, the losing pitcher in Thursday’s 7-1 licking at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers that left theZ Orioles an imperfect 0-15. “I don’t* care if you were trying to lose —Z you couldn’t lose this many games Z even if you went out there and I didn’t even give a damn.” Baltimore was out of it early Z when the Brewers scored six times Z in the third inning, capped by BillZ Schroeder’s two-run homer. “I went out there and had great intentions of throwing a shutout' and slopping things,” McGregorsaid. “But before I could do anything about it they had six runs on the board.” The AL record of 20 consecutive losses is shared by the 1906 Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Athletics in 1916 and 1943. The 1961. Philadelphia Phillies set the majorleague mark of 23 straight. While Milwaukee was kayoing McGregor in the third inning, Milwaukee’s Chris Bosio stopped the Orioles on eight hits with his third complete game. The Orioles didn’t score until the eighth inning. It was only Baltimore’s 29th run in the 15 losses. The Orioles have been held to one run five limes and shut out three limes. The Brewers scored their first run on singles by Paul Molitor, Robin Yount and Glenn Braggs. Rob Deer’s double made it 2-0 and Greg Brock doubled two more runs home before Schroeder hit his first home run of the season. “I’ve gotten all kinds of phone calls and advice, but not many of those people can play positions,” Baltimore manager Frank Robinson said. “We just have to keep battling with this thing until we get out of it. We need a well-pitched game. We need to put some runs on the board.” Athletics 6, White Sox 3 Stan Javier drove in the lead run with a two-out single in the 13th inning after Jose Canseco and Dave Parker had one-out singles off Bill Long and Mark McGwire walked to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Dave Henderson struck out, but Javier blooped a single to score Canseco and two more runs came home on an error by shortstop Ozzie Guillen and Long’s wild pitch. Angels 11, Mariners 6 Johnny Ray drove in a careerhigh six runs and he and Bob Boone went 4-for-4. Ray’s two-run double off Billy Swift in the third inning, following Boone’s single and Dick Schofield’s double, gave California 2-0 lead. He also had a two-run single in the sixth and another two-run double in the eighth, both off Mike Jackson. Red Sox 12, Tigers 3 Ellis Burks had four hits and drove in four runs, Spike Owen hit a two-run homer and rookie Steve Ellsworth scattered six hits over seven innings for his first majorleague victory. Burks, who drove in three runs with a bases-loaded triple, also scored three times. Pat Sheridan and Matt Nokes homered for Detroit. Z ♦
