fireman. They know where these sites should be at.” CURRENTLY, DOUGLAS said a proposal is being written to obtain funds for “three to four hydrants” per county. “We’re in the process of writing the grant,” Douglas noted, “and hope to receive a total of 25 hydrants over our eight-county area.” Once they are in place in each county, then private homeowners and other persons will be invited to observe how they work and possibly purchase their own. The hydrants, Coffenberry said, can be invaluable. Not only do they provide an added safety factor in fire protection for homes as firefighters would be able to retrieve water from a source in a rural location, but there are cost benefits as well. INSURANCE RATES for many rural homeowners will be reduced with the addition of the hydrants. “The biggest impact of this,” Coffenberry emphasized, “is the safety factor and the lowering of insurance rates.” One thing that Coffenberry said he would like to stress is that the project is just not an effort to get funding to purchase the hydrants. In fact, it’s far from that aspect alone. “Our main aim is to get people educated about the hydrants,” Coffenberry said, “and to know they are available. If people do want them, we hope to be able to purchase them through good group rates. “THE THREE OR four we hope to put in each county should help us get a good core (representation). Then, people can see how these operate.” On the average, the hydrants would cost each homeowner approximately S3OO-S4OO, Coffenberry says. “That’s just the cost of the basic hydrant,” he added.

“There would still be the charge to the homeowner for the PVC (to get the water from the lake to the hydrant).” Still, Coffenberry believes that is a minimal cost for the benefit involved and Douglas agrees. Douglas and Coffenberry say all county representatives both have spoken with have been enthusiastic about the project. THE DUO ATTENDED a March 7 meeting of the Putnam County commissioners, discussed the project with Commissioners Gene Beck, John Carson and Don Walton and received that board’s support. In fact, the commissioners are discussing putting such a hydrant near the Green Acres County Home, according to Douglas and Coffenberry. “That’s going to be an interesting project,” Coffenberry said of the Green Acres hydrant effort. “They (the Putnam County commissioners) are working with the Soil Conservation Service on that.” Meanwhile, Douglas noted there is soon to be a hydrant placed in the Albin Pond area by a private individual. “There is no timetable set yet on that one,” he pointed out, “but there is one ready for installation in the county.” DOUGLAS SAID HE and Coffenberry hope to set up Putnam County’s hydrant meeting with fire officials within the next month. “We know this is something we’re going to have to get started on right away,” Douglas assured. If anything, both want to continue the effort while the interest is so high among the professional firefighters who have full knowledge of what benefit the hydrants will be to homeowners. “We’ve just had a really large number of people interested,” Douglas concluded. “We’ve really been pleased so far.”

Bainbridge Fire Dept. A house and parked car were damaged in a 3:10 a.m. fire on East Indiana Street in Bainbridge Saturday, Bainbridge Volunteer Fire Department officials said. A fire of undetermined origin gutted a bedroom of the Grace Downing residence. The home is actually owned by Rex Eaton, Route 1, Bainbridge. Smoke damage was reported to the other rooms of the home. THREE SCHOOL-AGE children were home alone when the fire broke out, fire officials said. Sam Downing, the oldest child, approximately 13, phoned in the alarm and got the other children out of the home unharmed after reportedly waking up to find the fire. “It was a good thing,” a BVFD spokesman said, because the bedrooms are all located together." Firemen used 1,500 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze. No damage estimate was available. Sixteen firemen responded to the call and returned to station at 4:45 a.m. Saturday after their 40th run of the year.
