Bulls deliver another key blow to Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Michael Jordan, the NBA’s scoring leader, believes he doesn’t have to carry his Chicago Bulls into the playoffs. “Anyone who figures we’re a one-man team is going to be surprised,” said Jordan, who had a rare off-night shooting and still scored 35 points as the Bulls beat Indiana 116-110 Thursday, dealing a serious blow to the Pacers’ playoff hopes and boosting Chicago’s hopes of catching second-place Atlanta in the Atlantic Division. “I really couldn’t get anything generated offensively. I missed a lot of easy shots,” said Jordan, who was 4-of-14 in the first half and 12-of-28 for the night as he topped the 30-point mark for the 52nd time this season. “I really wanted to come out and get everybody off to a good start I was sending my shots a little long. That tells me I was over hyper,” Jordan said. Chicago had six players in double figures as it moved to within one game of Atlanta with six games toplay. “The guys really came through when it counted. Horace Grant played excellent, Brad Sellers played excellent and Charles Oakley gave us a lift when we needed,” Jordan said. Grant came off the bench to score 18 points and had a gamehigh 13 rebounds, playing 31 minutes. Vincent also scored 18. “Our confidence level is high now. We know we can win games. Even when we were down by nine, we don’t get all shaken up,” Jordan said. The Pacers are on the verge of being eliminated from playoff contention after their eighth loss in 10 games. Indiana is tied with Washington for the eighth and last Eastern Conference playoff spot with five games to play. The Bullets won the season series between the teams and would qualify for the playoffs on that basis. Philadelphia, which plays here Saturday, trails Indiana and Washington by a halfgame.

“Our (playoff) chances are slowly slipping away. Now we’re depending on someone else losing,” said Indiana’s Wayman Tisdale, who had 18 of his 30 points in the opening quarter. “It is starting to tell that our confidence level is not as strong as it was. We need to get back to the basics and play hard on both ends of the floor.” Jordan had 10 points in the final period, came up with a big steal and capped the scoring by making two free throws with five seconds left when he was fouled immediately after the steal. “I anticipated the ball going to Reggie Miller right at the end. I saw it in Chuck’s eyes and was able to steal it,” Jordan said. The Pacers missed nine consecutive shots in the fourth quarter, going more than six minutes without a field goal. “We played a lot harder and did a lot of things well but still came up short” said Indiana’s John Long, who had 23 points. Tisdale was 10-of-14 with 24 points in the first half. “We just stopped him from getting to the post We didn’t send anybody to him or overplay the defense on him,” Jordan said. “Oakley just played tough defense against him.” Pacer* Thursday boucorc Chicago 114, lOndiana lit CHICAGO (116) Oakley 4-8 7-9 15. Pirates, Astros remain hot in National League

By The Associated Press The two hottest teams in the National League have, not surprisingly, the two hottest players. Barry Bonds and Glenn Davis are off to torrid starts, and their blistering bats have lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros to the top of their divisions. Bonds had two homers, including one leading off the game, the seventh straight game he has hit safely in his first at-bat, as the Pirates beat Philadelphia 4-2. Pittsburgh completed a three-game sweep of the Phillies and is 6-2 overall. Davis drove in five runs with a three-run homer and a pair of singles, leading the Astros to a 9-3 victory over Cincinnati. Houston is 7-1 and Davis leads the NL with five home runs and 15 runs batted in. Pirates 4, Phillies 2 The Pirates won 27 of their last 38 games in 1987. And they’ve continued to win this year. Junior Ortiz also hit a homer and drove in the tie-breaking run with a basesloaded walk in the third inning. Astros 9, Reds 3 Davis’ three-run homer in the first inning started Houston’s rout and he also drove in runs with singles in the fourth and seventh innings. He is batting .375 and equaled a career high with his five runs batted in. Mets 1, Expos 0 Both teams got only two hits, but one was Len Dykstra’s leadoff homer in the sixth inning off Dennis Martinez. Bob Ojeda made the run stand up. Ojeda allowed a one-out double to Andres Galarraga in the second inning, then retired 18 straight before Mike Fitzgerald singled in the eighth. Padres 2, Dodgers 0 Jimmy Jones, Mark Davis and Lance McCullers combined on the
