Peace Lutheran begins Lent observance

The Lenten season may not be the longest season in the church year, but it is one of the most important if not the most important season of the year, Pastor Alan Barber of Peace Lutheran Church ; in Greencastle says.

The shafts yielded the layer we sought only at Et Tell,” Arav said. Rocky terrain and clashes that culminated in Israel seizing the Golan Heights from Syria' in 1967 have long made theories about the location of Bethsaida hard to prove. Even today access is difficult Et Tell, a small mound just north of where the Jordan River empties into the Sea of Galilee, is situated among abandoned Syrian bunkers and exploded 52mm mortar shells Lenten activities at St. Andrew’s Lenten activities for the coming week at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 520 E. Seminary St, Greencastle, have been announced by Rev. William Wieland. Activities will include a pancake supper on Shrove, scheduled for 5;30-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16. The public is invited to attend the supper. Donations are acceptable. Ash Wednesday services will be read at 12:30 and 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17. Imposition of ashes will be available at both services.

in an area that until recently was suspected of being a mine field. BETHSAIDA WAS the site where Jesus was said to have restored a blind man’s sight (Mark 8:22) and healed Peter’s mother of a fever (Matthew 8:14). He also began his famous walk on water from the shores of Bethsaida (Mark 6:45), and chose a site nearby to multiply two fish and five loaves of bread into enough food to feed 5,000 followers (Luke 9:10). Bethsaida, which means house of fishing in Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke, was also the birthplace of Peter, his brother Andrew and the apostle Phillip (John 1:44). “BETHSAIDA WAS extremely important,” said Arav, of die Golan Research Institute in Katzrin, eight miles north of Et Tell. “It is the third-most frequently mentioned place in the New Testament, cited in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Only Jerusalem and Capernaum are mentioned more often,” he said. Because it was also a popular spot of early Christian pilgrimmage, scholars were able to estimate its position as early as 1860, said the Rev. Virgil Pixner, a Roman Catholic priest and an expert on early Christian culture.

First Baptist plans ‘come-as-you-work’ Sunday celebration

No, they haven’t sent their Sunday clothes to the cleaners, nor are they starting a new tradition or religion. They are embarking mi a new adventure though to see if they can make Christ relevant in their work place. To try to bridge the gap between the church and work they will be wearing their work clothes to worship on Sunday, Feb. 14. PASTOR PAUL BOWEN has established this as “Come-As-You-Work” Sunday and is encouraging everyone to come dressed as if they were going to work, whether it’s in the factory, the farm, the office, school or yes, even at home. For the 50 days beginning February 14, members and friends of First Baptist will be joining in a spiritual adventure sponsored by the national radio broadcast, “The Chapel of the Air.” The adventure study is entitled, “50 Days For Christ to Transform My Daily Work.” Participants will discover that Christ wants to be a part of every area of their lives including the work they do each day. Planned to coincide with the Lenten season, the adventure is an annual event dedicated to helping participants experience rapid spiritual growth through a time of Bible study, prayer and Christian outreach. This year’s study is designed to help us experience the

reality of Christ’s presence in the workplace, and will conclude Easter Sunday, April 3. AS BOWEN, EXPLAINS, “We’re hoping that everyone will get involved in this 50-day adventure. That’s because everyone has daily work whether they’re in the business world, in a service industry, at home with children, retired or unemployed. We even have special materials available for children and teen-agers so they can discover how Christ wants to be involved in their daily work at home and at school. “Many people believe that Christ would be uncomfortable in a secular work setting, so between Sundays they put their Christian faith on hold. But the New Testament Gospels show us that Christ was involved in every area of life including the workplace. In fact, he was a carpenter, some of his closest followers were fishermen, and he often spoke to people as they went about their daily tasks,” Rev. Bowen concluded. In addition to the members at First Baptist about 2,000 other congregations from across the country will be joining the Chapel’s Adventure Sunday. Persons interested in learning more about this adventure may contact Jim Poor (653-6234) or call the church office (653-3136) and talk to one of the pastors.
