lowa caucus-goers to make choices
DES MOINES, lowa (AP) After a long year of being wooed by candidates, lowans meet tonight to make the first major electoral decisions of the 1988 presidential campaign. The speechmaking and handshaking was continuing right up to the doors of precinct caucuses • with Republican Sen. Bob Dole and Democrat Jesse Jackson planning to greet people as they arrived at two of the meetings. CANDIDATES IN both parties were putting a lid on their rhetoric and keeping an eye on the weather. Snow was expected over much of the state by caucus time. A severe storm was generally seen as helping former TV evangelist Pat Robertson, whose supporters were expected to brave any conditions to cast votes for him in the GOP race. The caucuses in 2,487 precincts were the first step toward choosing 52 Democratic and 37 Republican national convention delegates. But delegates weren’t the big prize in lowa. What the candidates were seeking was momentum going into New Hampshire, although that state’s primary voters have a history of rejecting lowa choices. The final week of the Republican campaign was dominated by squabbling between Dole, of Kansas, and Vice President George Bush. And Rep. Jack Kemp of New York accused Robertson supporters of distorting his record on pornography and abortion. THE DEBATE was calmer among the Democrats, where Sen. Paul. Simon of Illinois, Rep. Richard Gephardt of Missouri and Gov. Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts appeared most likely to succeed. Bush planned to await the lowa results in New Hampshire, whose primary on Feb. 16 is the next big test. It also is a state where polls show he has stronger support. Dole held a 14-point lead over Bush in lowa, according to a Des Moines Register poll published Sunday. He planned to fly to New
Another Michigan mystery solved by special TV show?
MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) A network television show on unsolved mysteries led to the arrest of a couple accused of robbing and killing a Michigan gas station employee, authorities said Saturday. Jerry Strickland, 26, and Melissa K. Munday, 17, also watched the program Friday night and were waiting for police when they arrived at their home early Saturday, police officer John Mays said. AFTER THE TWO were mentioned in the Robert Stackhosted NBC program “Unsolved Mysteries,” police received 15 to 20 phone calls from area residents. The show pictured Strickland as wanted for questioning in a nine-month-old unsolved homicide north of Pontiac, Mich. “It’s a fantastic show,” Waterford Township Sgt. Don Bailey said of “Unsolved Mysteries.” “That’s the third crime from Michigan the show has solved.” Warrants charge Strickland with homicide, armed robbery

Hampshire on Tuesday. Also awaiting the caucus results in lowa were Robertson, Kemp and former Gov. Pete du Pont of Delaware. The sixth GOP contender, former Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig, Jr., stopped campaigning in lowa months ago and is concentrating on New Hampshire. THE SURVEY released Sunday gave Dole the backing of 37 percent of likely Republican caucusgoers; Bush had 23 percent, Robertson 13 percent, Kemp 11, du Pont 7 and Haig 1. On the Democratic side, Gephardt had the support of 25 percent of people who said they planned to attend the Democratic caucuses. and fraud, Mays said. Ms. Munday was wanted for investigation of homicide. They were held in the Grant County Jail in Ephrata pending extradition. Unce the warrants were confirmed, Sgt. Dennis Duke and Mays arrested the couple at their home without incident at 5:30 a.m. “THEY WEREN’T surprised. They had been watching the same show,” Mays said. “They were expecting us.” Strickland had been working at the Moses Lake K mart store, and Ms. Munday worked at a greeting card shop, Mays said. They had been in the area since June. Police sought the pair in the killing of a Union 76 gas station courier, Elmer Deßoer, who was kidnapped, taken to a remote area and shot twice in the back of the head, Bailey said. More than SIO,OOO was taken in the robbery. Ms. Munday was assistant manager at the gas station and Strickland had been a cleric at another station, E .Mey said.

Hart at 7 and Sen. Albert Gore Jr. of Tennessee at 1 percent. All but Hart and Gore were awaiting the results in lowa. Bush upset Ronald Reagan in lowa in 1980, but Reagan roared back to score a solid win in New Hampshire. In 1984, New Hampshire voters were equally disdainful of the lowa choice. That time Walter F. Mondale, a big winner in lowa, was beaten by Hart in New Hampshire. FOR HART, once the Democratic front-runner, lowa was a test of his effort to revive a can-

step system of caucuses and conventions to pick their national convention delegates, beginning with the precinct caucuses on Feb. 8. The first order of business at the precinct caucuses is to conduct a presidential preference straw poll, which has no binding effect on later levels of. the delegate-selection process. The precinct caucuses elect delegates to the county conventions, which elect delegates to the congressional district caucuses and the GOP state convention. The congressional district caucuses on June 24 will choose 18 national convention delegates, three from each of the state’s six congressional districts. The state convention will choose the remaining 19 national convention delegates on June 25.
didacy that had crashed in the wake of reports of an extramarital affair. Dole appeared to be benefiting from a campaign that portrayed him as a man with humble, smalltown roots, something many lowa voters could identify with. Bush was running as the underdog, saying he was “quite a bit behind,” but pledging to “fight back.” The big unknown in lowa was the strength of Robertson’s support which was based among people not traditionally active in Republican politics.
