Racial controversy arises in Anderson

By STEVE HERMAN AP Sports Writer Racism in Anderson? Or is it just sour grapes by the father of a black player kicked off the high school basketball team? Some blacks see an alleged racial slur against the former player as just one incident in a much larger problem of discrimination. But coach Norm Held, who admits using the word “nigger” in what he calls the “sanctity of the locker room,” denies it was intentionally directed at the player and sees the uproar as a case of media sensationalism that, regardless of what happens after this, forever brands him a racist. “It’s not fair. I’m not guilty of anything that’s racial in any shape or manner,” the longtime Anderson High School coach said in a telephone interview this week. “If the media had never given attention to it, it wouldn’t have amounted to a hill of beans.” According to Held, who is white, the black player was dropped from the team last month because of his attitude. He said the player, Kraig Perry, pouted after he came out of a game, threw his warm-up jacket and was heard to say to an assistant coach, “I quit this drill.” According to Perry’s father, William Perry, Held kicked the 16-year-old junior off the team and told him, “There’s no sense in anybody coming off the court pouting and letting the fans see your bad attitude. It makes you look like a nigger.” The incident, brought to light last week by the elder Perry, has sparked protests by black leaders, a demand for an investigation and even for Held’s resignation. A ninemember task force, an arm of the Anderson Human Relations Board, was formed last year by parents whose youngsters have reported other racial problems in Anderson schools. Held said of the specific incident involving Perry, “I’m so tired talking about this junk. It doesn’t deserve any kind of media attention at all. It’s been sensationalized. It’s at the point where you think it could only happen in the movies.

“We’re talking about the sanctity of a locker room, not talking about anything else. It’s hard to believe. It’s amazing,” he said of the uproar during the past week. “What we said in the locker room was in reference to an attitude. Never to a person. Everybody in the locker room was aware of that “I’ve never called anybody a name in my life,” Held said. “If somebody is going to define that word, there was no racial connotation to it (the remark). Why after 20 years (as a coach) would I single out one individual? It doesn’t make any sense. “If I did it, it was certainly unintentional.” The Indians, four-time state tourney runners-up under Held, are 9-7 so far this season. Last Friday, the day after the incident was reported by Perry’s father, Anderson lost to Kokomo’s No. 4-ranked Wildkats, 87-38. “Certainly it’s distracting,” Held said. “All you have to do is see how we played against Kokomo. Everybody wants a story about this thing and there is no story.” Held said Perry quit the team last year. “I went out of my way to let him come back to try and play basketball this year. But apparently he couldn’t live with some of the rules.” Nevertheless, Held said, “The damage is done. No matter what happens, in the eyes of some people there always will be guilt.” Meanwhile, third-ranked Concord, which ended one team’s unbeaten streak last week, tries to repeat the trick this week at No .6 South Bend St. Joseph’s. which handed No. 7 Oregon-Davis its first loss last week, takes a 13-0 record against St. Joe’s 14-0 mark. The game has been moved to Notre Dame’s Athletic and Convocation Center Saturday night, unless either school’s girls team is playing in a sectional championship game that night Fifth-ranked Bedford-North Lawrence, coming off a 38-point performance by Damon Bailey in an 81-77 victory over No. 15 Jeffersonville, plays anaother ranked team Friday night in a crucial Hoosier Hills Conference matchup against No. 16 Floyd Central. A victory would clinch the conference championship for Floyd Central, which already has beaten every other HCC opponent Bedford still has one more conference game against Columbus East. In other Friday games, OregonDavis takes on Knox, No. 8 Gary Roosevelt is at Hammond, No. 9 Anderson Highland is at Huntington North, and No. 10 Indianapolis Cathedral has a rematch against Indianapolis Broad Ripple, which upset the Irish in the first round of the city tourney two weeks ago. Elsewhere, No. 11 Terre Haute North is at Carmel; unbeaten Mississinewa, ranked 12th, is at Southern Wells; No. 13 Columbus North, which has won 10 straight games since a loss to Cathedral and has scored more than 90 points in each of its past five games, is at Southport; Louisville Valley plays at Jeffersonville; No. 18 LaPorte is at Chesterton; and Ho. 20 Marion, whose only loss in the past eight games was to Richmond, is at Indianapolis North Central.
