People in the news Letterman off the hook for condom remark LOS ANGELES (AP) “Late Night” host David Letterman’s televised monologue describing actress Martha Raye as a condom user did not defame her and could not have been taken seriously, a judge says. Superior Court Judge Norman Epstein made his comment Wednesday, indicating he plans to dismiss a $lO million lawsuit Miss Raye filed against Letterman. The actress claimed she was defamed in the NBCTV host’s March 5 monologue, in which Letterman said he had seen “a terrifying commercial on television last night, featuring Martha Raye, actress, condom user.”, Raye, 71, alleged that the remark implied she had loose morals, needed condom protection and had frequent sexual intercourse with people she perceived to be infected with or exposed to AIDS. • NEW YORK (AP) Zubin Mehta, music director of the New York Philharmonic, is contemplating retirement at the end of the 1990-91 season, according to a newspaper report. “The way it stands now, I’m leaving. But my contract has four years to go. If they come to me in two years’ time with an offer, I will think about it then,” the 51-year-old Mehta said in an interview published Wednesday in The New York Times. When his contract expires at the end of the 199091 season, Mehta will have been the Philharmonic’s music director longer than any other conductor. • NEW YORK (AP) Gayle Sierens, a news anchor in Tampa, Fla., will become the first woman to do play-by-play on a network NFL telecast Dec. 27 when she works the Seattle-Kansas City game on NBC. “It’s not brain surgery, but it is significant,” said the 33-ycar-old Sierens, who will work with commentator Dave Row. The national audience will hear a sample of Sierens’ work during “NFL Live,” network spokesman Kevin Monaghan said Wednesday. The Seattle-Kansas City game occurs on the final weekend of the regular season, so it will be Sierens’ only NFL telecast this year, the network said.

BETTE MIDLER Woman of the Year
NEW YORK (AP) Entertainer Bette Midler, Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, and freed Soviet refusenik Ida Nudel are among Ms. magazine’s 13 winners of 1987 Women of the Year awards. Miss Midler, an actress, comedian, singer and mother, succeeded “without sacrificing one whit of her smarts, originality, bawdiness or power to the conventions of Hollywood and mass media,” Ms. announced Wednesday. Brundtland and Nudel will share the magazine’s “Simone de Beauvoir International Woman of the Year Award,” named for the French feminist who died in 1986. The Ms. Women of the Year awards started in 1983 as a response to Time magazine’s Man of the Year issue. • CHELLICOTHE, Ohio (AP) Rock star John Cougar Meilencamp attracted legions of fans to two free concerts in this southern Ohio city, including Gov. Richard Celeste. Celeste and two of his daughters Noelle and Natalie danced in the press balcony of the Shoemaker Center on the Ohio University-Chil-licothe campus during Mellencamp’s second show. Meilencamp, from Seymour, Ind., performed four encores after the one-hour concert. Police had few problems from people attending the concerts, both of which were performed in front of capacity crowds estimated at 2,500 each. Private security personnel were hired to control the crowd inside the center. The concert resulted from about two years of negotiations between local radio station WFCB-FM and Mellencamp’s manager Harry Sandler. In April 1986, WFCB disc jockey Chip Arledge presented Meilencamp with a petition signed by 6,200 people, each pledging to pay up to S2O per ticket to see Mellencamp perform in this city of 25,000. Meilencamp congratulated the crowd for its efforts in bringing him to Chillicothe.
