Bears-49ers looms as early super match-up By The Associated Press Monday night’s game at Candlestick Park between the 10-2 Chicago Bears and the 10-2 San Francisco 49ers could be this year’s Super Bowl. Forget about Jan. 31 at San Diego, where for the third year in a row, the NFC champion is almost sure to be a double-digit favorite over whoever emerges from the win-one,lose-one AFC. Both teams have already clinched playoff berths, although the 49ers are still fighting off the upstart Saints in the NFC West. What this game is likely to decide is who gets the home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs and the team that’s had it has gone on to the Super Bowl the last six years. Those kinds of streaks are made to end, but it’s hard to visualize anyone San Francisco, New Orleans or Washington winning in Chicago in January with a conference title on the line. There are sub-plots, of course. ONE IS THE CONSTANT sub-plot with the Bears will Jim McMahon play after injuring a hamstring in Sunday night’s win over Minnesota? Early in the week, coach Mike Ditka was calling him “very, very doubtful.” There is also the matter of Jerry Rice, the San Francisco receiver who can tie an NFL record with a touchdown catch in his 11th consecutive game. His exploits have contributed to quarterback Joe Montana’s best season since the Super Bowl season of 1984. “Nobody has stopped them yet,” Ditka said of the MontanaRice combination. “But we’ll do the best we can. It would really be important to us to beat the 49ers in their own ballpark.” Which is what this game is all about. MOST OF THE INTEREST this week is in the AFC, where 11 of the 14 teams remain in at least nominal playoff contention, including all of them in the East. The schedule also includes Bo Jackson’s return in a football uniform to Kansas City, where he wore the blue of baseball’s Royals. In addition to the Bears-49ers on Monday, the Sunday games are Buffalo at Indianapolis; Cincinnati at Cleveland; Dallas at Washington; Houston at New Orleans; Miami at Philadelphia; Minnesota vs. Green Bay at Milwaukee; the New York Jets at New England; Los Angeles Raiders at Kansas City; New York Giants at SL Louis; Pittsburgh at San Diego; Detroit at Tampa Bay; Atlanta at the Los Angeles Rams and Denver at Seattle in the Sunday night game. Denver (8-3-1) at Seattle (7-5) John Elway has almost singlehandedly carried the Broncos to four straight wins and control of the AFC. In fact, if they win two of their last three, Denver is liable to have the home-field edge in the conference and an edge that could make them the second team in the ’Bos to reach two straight Super Bowls. For the Broncos, this game can be called a gift from Val Pinchbeck, the NFL’s schedule maker, who had to listen in the offseason to complaints from Denver coach Dan Reeves about always ending the season in the Kingdome, where the Broncos lost, 41-16, last year. This year, the timing is even more propitious than a 14thweek meeting would seem to be. The Seahawks’ problem is stopping the run they surrendered a ghastly 356 yards against the Raiders two weeks ago, including 221 to Bo Jackson and 221 yards to the Steelers last week. They also missed an extra point against Pittsburgh and had two critical second-half turnovers. Buffalo (6-6) at Indianapolis (7-5) Miami (6-6) at Philadelphia (5-7) N. Y. Jets (6-6) at New England (5-7) Three pivotal games for the AFC East, which has at least gotten off the .500 treadmill it’s been on all season. The key, of course, is Buffalo at Indianapolis, which could put the Colts in almost total control. Even if Buffalo wins, it would still trail by half-a-game in the tiebreaker. The Colts will again start Jack Trudeau at quarterback, who replaced the injured Gary Hogeboom in last Sunday’s 9-7 upset of Cleveland. Is Miami’s problem the weather? After getting shut out in Buffalo, the Dolphins went back south and put up 27 first-half points against the Jets, moving the ball with impunity. If it’s weather, Philadelphia could present a problem, although the Eagles diddled around ineffectively in the elements at Giants’ stadium. The other problem could be the absence of center Dwight Stephenson, out for the season with knee injury. He’s probably the second most important player on the team to Dan Marino. But with cooperation from Buffalo, Marino could have fun against an Eagle defense that can be beaten either long or short (take your choice), depending on how they choose to play the receivers. The Patriots, of course, MUST win and so must the banged up Jets, who are down to third-stringers and former replacement players in the secondary. Running back Freeman McNeil is probably out, comerback Russell Carter is gone for the season and so is linebacker Lance Mehl, who played all of two games this year. The Patriots will simply play with whatever they can scrape up. As it is, they may be the first team from the East to be knocked out. Houston (7-5) at New Orleans (9-3) Pittsburgh (7-5) at San Diego (8-4) Cincinnati (4-8) at Cleveland (7-5) Shouldn’t Cleveland be running away with the AFC Central? Maybe not. The personnel isn’t as good as it’s supposed to be and the defensive tricks don’t work against a conservative attack. It also doesn’t help when you fumble at your opponent’s three in the fourth quarter. But everything is going wrong for the Bengals, the Browns are at home and they should take control of the division again. That’s because the other two 7-5 teams have tough assignments. Houston, for example, may be overmatched in New Orleans. Although the Saints have clinched their first playoff spot ever, Jim Mora won’t let them let down, particularly when they still have a shot at a division title. And Pittsburgh, which is being carried by a defense that may carry coordinator Tony Dungy to a head coaching job, runs into desperation in San Diego. The Chargers are sinking to their level, having lost three straight. They’re now at a point where what seemed like a sure playoff berth could go sailing out the window, particularly with a loss to the Steelers, who would then get a tiebreaker edge for a wild-card. If New York which beat the Cards, 30-7, the first week after the strike wins they won’t finish last in the NFC East, losing the easy schedule that would virtually ensure them a playoff berth next year. The Rams, meanwhile, have won four straight as Charles White has taken over Eric Dickerson’s role and Jim Everett has come alive. Atlanta’s 21-10 win over Dallas last week did at least one thing keep Marion Campbell’s job a little warmer.
