Young Clovers triumph WEST TERRE HAUTE Winning the first six matches including the initial four via the pin was exactly what the doctor ordered for the Cloverdale High School wrestling team Tuesday night as the Clovers defeated West Vigo, 43-28. COACH DAVE Kiley had one freshman and seven sophomores on the mat for the match, with plenty of inexperience accompanying them. Getting off on the right foot was the perfect thing for the CHS grapplers to gain confidence. “For it being our first match, we were ready,” said Kiley’s assistant, Sam Melchior. “We’re young, but we wrestled well.” Freshman Dean Williams and sophomores Tom Baxter and Kevin Shew all pinned their opponents in the first three weight classes (103, 112, 119 pounds), before senior Brad Smith followed at 125 pounds by pinning his Viking foe as well. JUNIOR JIM Smith was next and won by decision at 130 pounds, while senior Brice Mabry recorded a major decision at 135 pounds. In all, that staked Cloverdale to a 31-0 lead, and the visitors were able to put it into cruise control the rest of the way. Rob Lavoine (152) and Chris Phelps (160) also pinned their opponents to give the Clovers their 43 points. Cyclones blow away Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE (AP) lowa State coach Johnny Orr knew if his Cyclones could get their momentum going they’d have a chance to slip past No. 2 Purdue and win a trip the semifinals of the Big Apple NIT. The Cyclones did it with just under four minutes remaining in Tuesday night’s college basketball game and went on to topple the Boilermakers, 104-96. Box in scoreboard “We just got control at the right time, got the momentum” said Orr. “We were excited to beat a team like that, the number two team on their home floor.” Jeff Grayer led lowa State’s second half surge, scoring 19 of his 29 points. “Grayer is a great player,” Onsaid. “He’s as fine a basketball player as I’ve ever coached a tremendous competitor.” Purdue coach Gene Keady said

IU officials reprimand Knight

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Indiana University basketball coach Bob Knight, who admitted he “let some personal feelings outweigh good judgment” was reprimanded by school officials for leading his team off the floor early in an exhibition game with the touring Soviet National team. The walkout occurred Saturday night after Knight was whistled for a third technical and ejected. The Soviets, leading 66-43, won by forfeit. The university said in a statement issued Tuesday: “Coach Knight said that he had made a serious mistake of judgment, and that he recognized it caused great embarrassment not only to himself and the basketball program, but also, and most importantly, to the entire university and its supporters.” Meanwhile, Knight turned up Tuesday as speaker for a meeting in Bloomington of the Rotary Club and apologized again for the incident. He said he “let some personal feelings outweigh good judgment as far as the general scope of things in that particular game were con-

lowa State “deserved to win” because “they outplayed us.” He said when he watched the Cyclones practice Monday night “and saw their personnel, I knew we’d have a hard time stopping them.” Purdue led, 93-90, with 3:52 remaining before the Cyclones outscored the Boilermakers, 14-3, including 10 straight points that made it 100-93 with 40 seconds left. Mike Bom closed the gap to 9392 on a jump shot with 3:40 to go, and Lafester Rhodes, who finished with 18, had two free throws to give the Cyclones a 94-93 lead with 3:09 left lowa State didn’t trail again. Purdue, 1-1, missed five of its last six shots in the final four minutes. Everett Stephens, who finished with 17 points, scored the Boilermakers’ final basket, a 3pointer with 30 seconds to go. “I’ve been trying to convince our guys mental toughness and physical strength and togetherness are what we’ve got to get better

ceded.” Knight also told Rotarians, “Over the years I have put personal thoughts aside far more than anyone in this room will ever know. And yet on Saturday night, I didn’t. I let a couple of personal feuds interfere with what was the overall objective of that evening. And I was very, very sorry about that. “I was not particularly pleased with the way I handled the situation and certainly even less so relative to depriving people that were in the stands of an opportunity to watch our players play. “I was wrong, and I’ve got to go on from there,” Knight said. The coach said earlier he was angered by a lane violation game officials ignored during free throws taken by a Soviet player. Tuesday’s statement from the university said, in part, President Thomas Ehrlich and Athletic Director Ralph Floyd strongly reprimanded coach Knight, who gave his assurance that such an incident would not occur again. “The university has apologized to the sponsor of the game,

at,” Keady said. “My job is to sell them on that, and I haven’t been able to do it. Maybe it (the loss) will wake them up, or maybe it’s worse than what we thought. “Either we aren’t as good as everybody thinks we are or the players let their (newspaper) clippings go to their heads,” Keady said. “We’ll find out. I’ll tell you that.” Gary Thompkins had 15 points for lowa State, 2-0, which will play Florida in the semifinals Friday night. Seton Hall faces New Mexico in the other semifinal at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Purdue was led by Troy Lewis with 28 points, 18 in the first half. Amateur Basketball AssociationUSA, and through the sponsor to the Soviet team and coach,” the statement read. The nature of the reprimand was not specified. It wasn’t the first time the former Olympic and three-time NCAA champion coach has been involved in controversy during his 17 years as coach. Knight was convicted of assaulting a policeman in Puerto Rico during the 1979 Pan American Games. In 1975, he taunted a touring Soviet team by pounding his shoe on a table. He has chewed out Indiana home crowds for not cheering loud enough and at other times for chanting obscenities at opposing teams. He was suspended by the Big Ten for throwing a chair across the court, reprimanded by the conference for missing mandatory coaches’ meetings and fined by the NCAA for pounding the officials’ table during last spring’s NCAA tournament.
